Hobby fit the Winterhoff tow hitch and there is a matching Winterhoff tow hitch lock, called RoboStop. It enables the van to be locked on to the car as well as being used as a security clamp. Our one defeated thieves when our van was parked in a motorway service station on the outskirts of Barcelona.

Hello Pat

If you have an e-mail address I can send you all the information requested. My wife and I purchased our new Hobby van in Germany - February 2001 - and have travelled via Switzerland to Spain each winter - including having to tow on snow, using wheel chains on a Peugeot 406.

I send the same information to Caravan Club members and the response has been quite positive.

Peter

Thanks for the warning, I was just about to contact them for insurance of my new caravan, collecting end of June approx, I subscribe to Practical Caravan magazine and noticed them advertising in the magazine, believe they may be an associate company, why don't you try complaining to them as I have found out their full title is Entertainment and Leisure Ltd their advert is in July 2004 issue page 161 "no I havent got the wrong month" subscribers get their mag's early. I noticed under basic cover they do not pay for the items you discribed, only pay out under comprehensive. You need to see advert for yourself, "find book shop where you can brows free". You can see what I get up to "Ha Ha Ha". Get your next insurance company to give you their http://www address so you can see what is included and what is not included in your next policy before signing up,after all its a free service to check out what is offered on a policy on-line.

Good luck with your next insurance company and happy touring.

Regards Pearl

Hi Peter,

Got your message, forgot to ask who is the suppliers of the hitch lock called Robostop, are they easy to get hold of from a caravan distributor. I decided to contact Hobbyland-Hexel, left a message for Peter Hexel to ask him if I needed the extras for my Hobby 460UFe known as Autark-Paket and while I was enquiring I thought I may as well see If I could get him to install a gas bolier and thermostat. I was going to order the spare wheel, "but" my husband interviened and said as it would only go on the caravan in an emmergency he would rather get one from Towsure, next question?, What size wheels does this model have, my husband thinks it may be a 15inch. Well I better stop asking questions before I bore you silly.

"Thanks for all the info, you have been great".

Regards Pearl.

Hi Peter,
Took your advice and ordered the Robostop towhitch as you recomended and also pursuaded my husband to forget the cheapi towsure wheel and go for a proper hobby one, so both items are on order with the caravan. The only thing missing is the british electrics, probably have them done at Amberbridge Hobby Centre. Just a case now of getting a awning, hopeing to get a German one with a tall annaxe that can fit both side (Left/Right of awning) dont seam to be mutch about at a reasonable price. "If any members know different post me or use my e:mail given on site".

Sighning off now.
Speak to you again.

Regards Pearl.

Hi Pearl, my name is Eddie Hutchinson and I found a message you left on Preloved while looking for information on Hobby caravans.
We are about to contact a few German dealers about purchasing a Hobby 540ufe but I am not very sure from the brochure that I have what an Autark paket is and the gas boiler you had installed, does it run on electricity as well? If you can find the time to give me a reply I would be most grateful. Happy Hobbyvanning, Eddie.

Our spare wheel cost about £70

Hi Eddie,
Forgot to say you have a 3 way fridge and a electric boiler only, I had installed a gas boiler which is independent of the electric one (so I have to boilers), the hobby has no battery as the electric goes through a converter for the 12v lighting so this is why I had a battery and a charging unit and a control panel(we brit's normally refer to as a zig)installed in the package given above, also an optional extra is an onboard large freshwater tank. Sorry about the message above getting a bit mismash 'but' I am unable to get back in and straighten it up, hope you are able to work out what exactlly the package contains. i.e. everything you would have in a british top of the range caravan. P.S. Have you got a price list go to http://www.hobby-caravan.de if no joy getting it, contact me again, and I will put prices on here for you.
Regards Pearl.

Hi to any members thinking of purchasing a new hobby, here is a bit of usefull information:

The hobby comes with electrics 230w all you have to do is change faceing of 2pin plug for a british 3pin plug. The water heater is electric, if you want a gas boiler they will install it for you at an extra charge then you will have two boilers gas and electric.
The Hobby as a 13pin plug for towing all you have to do is order a conversion plug Towsure does one for £25.95 + p&p £4.94, which has 3plugs 1X13pin and 2X7pin, this just pushes on to your cars elec's and on to caravan elec's for towing.
The Hobby models all have 3way fridges.
In models 540 and over they have a microwave 750w.
The spare wheel is extra and so is the battery and charger.

Come back to me and let me know what model you have in mind and I can tell you what the book price is for models 2004, 'however remember you dont want to pay book price' you ask for BEST PRICE, if charged book price start asking for freebies to go with it, after all you wouldn't pay asking price for a car/caravan here in britain you always bargain to get something knocked off or some extras. It is easy to do as you are not having to do it face to face. Try it you will be suprised what you can get.

Regards Pearl.

Hi Eddie

Do take care with your proposal as there has been several pieces of incorrect information given on this particular forum 'Hobby caravans again'.

If you do your homework correctly, you will obtain a German catalogue and German price list BEFORE thinking about anything else.In the back of the price list are the 'Zubenhor' list - i.e. extras. This gives the information on chassis upgrading for increased payload, wheel and tyre sizes, spares wheels, the Autark-Paket - i.e. what the German's call a'Self sufficiency package'.

You can negotiate 'House' prices (i.e. discounts usually 7.5-12.5% on a NEW direct from factory price)for Hobby caravans through any respectable German supplier. Avoid 'special editions produced specifically for one particular supplier - they are usually cut down on spec versions and do not sell so readily on the used market.

Avoid using any cable adaptor for the electrics - the cable extenders have been known to drop onto the road, rub through and cause electrical failure of both car and caravan whilst on the move. Have the job done correctly - any competent trailer towbar/electrics installer can do the job quite inexpensively.

You will find it is only after you have purchased your caravan from Germany and ACTUALLY collected it, that you will be aware of all that is involved. My wife and I did this three years ago - over the internet and without being able to speak German. Our only mistake was in the ferry booking. A return ticket - with caravan booked both ways is cheaper than two singles! We know of other purchasers who have bought the 'Return' ticket - they just explained at the docks that they were collecting their van from Germany ....!

Good luck

Peter

Hi Pearl, firstly many thanks for your very detailed and informative reply it has helped me understand better what is involved and I am sure it will be of help to others also.
I sent off emails today to Joeressens and Hobby-Hexel inquiring about the availability of an Excellent 540 ufe, asking if they had any 2004 stock left or when the new 2005 models arrive. I'll leave a note in the forum here to let you know how things go.
I retired 5 years ago (at 55) but my wife continued to work until the beginning of November last year, 2 weeks later we had packed up the van and were on our way down to Spain for the winter. We had planned to do this after we both stopped work, so this was it. Our first long term stop was at Vinaros where we stayed till after newyear, then we moved to Altea where we intended to stay for a few weeks but then we had a call from our daughter saying that she wanted to come out for a visit in February, so as we were only about 35 miles from Alicante airport we decided to stay in Altea, which is a lovely little place, and continued to stay there till our return home in mid April. We had a good chance to look at all the German vans on the site and I think Hobby must be the best value for money caravan available today. When we returned home we put our van up for sale and it sold last week so we are hoping we can hear about stock availability soon. As I said before I'll let you know how things progress.

Thanks again, Eddie.

Hi Peter, thank you for your words of caution, this is why I am trying to obtain as much info as possible before actually committing myself to any definate order.
We do have the German brochure and 'Preiliste' which we picked up from Ernst Caravans in Ettenhiem on our way home this year, the price for a 2004 Excellent 540 ufe is stated at Euro 14100 ex works including 16% Mwst whatever that is, vat possibly. So at approximately £9700 you are getting a lot of caravan for not a lot of money.
Yes I suppose there will be some other expenses to add to that figure if you want to add extras plus travelling costs, but you must be saving money if you were buying an equivalent british van.
As yet I have had no return mail from the dealers I have contacted, but when I do I will post here for any interested parties.

Cheers, Eddie.
