My symptons are as follows: Temperature gauge registers the car heating up quickly, hot air comes from the heater matrix, top radiator hose gets very hot but the bottom radiator hose going to the thermostat stays quite cold. Am I correct in my assumption that the thermostat is kapput?
Before you fit the new thermostat, drill an 1/8 - 1/4 hole about 1/4 inch from the outer edge. then fit it with the hole uppermost, this will help prevent getting air locks when you refill the cooling system. When you refill the cooling system, make sure that there is water returning to the expansion bottle through the small pipe at the top.
From a mechanical luddite ----- We've had a '96 rover 100 kensington SE for about 18 months - upto now it's been the perfect car. But on a recent long motorway trip it started showing some overheating problems.... Basically at sustained speeds of 70mph or above the temperature gauge would creep up from it's usual position 1/3 of the way up the dial to about 2/3 up, dropping to about 60mph for 10mins or so would bring back to about 1/2 way. It hasn't done this before on motorway trips and doesn't show any problems in regular driving conditions. 1) How worried should I be? 2) Possible causes? 3) Costs to get it checked out and fixed? Thanks in advance for any help.....
Replace Thermostat. parts cost £10. simple DIY job.
been reading the thread been helpful thanks...I got a rover 100 in which the head gasket had been replaced 2 weeks earlier had been bled a couple of times but still overheated. also has same problem of cold air from heater...kept over heating took to garage and they said needed another head gasket (they did carbon monoxide test) took away and check all the hose pipes and outlet to radiator was cold but rest boiling messed around a bit trying to unblock airlocks but kept overheating still...suddenly fan kicked in which seemed to work no seems fine (fingers crossed) am I doing a lot of damage still driving it or may this have dislodge the offending valves fixing the problem ...p.s is it worth replacing the pin valves? thanx in advance for any help

no hot air in the car..fan not kicking in even when changing sensors new fan 2nd hand radiator new radiator switch . blah blah blah (its a pain in the arse) ..1 idea is to bypass the radiator switch and just have the fan running at all times (as a temp problem solver ) but not good in the long term but it kept my car on the road .. but im trying what patrick said at the start of this disscussion. let us know how you get on if you try this way please
Regarding bypassing the fan switch, ok for an emergency repair, but causes the engine to run too cold.
i feel sorry for all the people that have bought new rovers .. from what i hear on the news .....bye
Cheers
Just bought a Rover 600 (P Reg) a month ago. All seemed fine, till one day I was driving back from Skipton and steam was comming out of hood! Looked at guage and noticed that was in the red. Did all I could to minimise damage (free-wheeled - turned heater on etc..) but still ended up having to have cylinder head gasket replaced. Thought problem was over (garage could not see any obvious problems) but car still overheating (and drinking water like a fish!) No leaks (that I am aware of) and heater is blowing hot air (although heater only works on full setting - Im guessing switch has gone.) Dont think the heater matrix is at fault (because - as I understand it - water would be comming in to the car from the heater matrix.) Garage is stumped, and so I am desperate to find cause. The radiator fan was working intermitantly - but this has since been remedied (by by-passing thermostat for the time being) but problem still persists! Now, Im no mechanic so Im not sure what type of engine 600 series of this reg uses (K Series ?) but I am desperate for a cure. Is it likely to be this ball-bearing thing that seems to plague the 200 series ? Would be eternally grateful for any kind sole that can help out here. I am taking car back to garage later this week - so would be nice if I could perhaps suggest something to them (as they seem at a loss.) Many thanks.. P.S water seems to be boiling in reseviour, top hose from radiator is hot and return hose seems hot also (but not as hot as top hose - so may be due to conduction ?) Paul.
