Hi. Unless you have a leaky heater matrix or hose they coolant loss is unlikely to be associated.

hello mate yep its your head gasket gone but there is a fix to the problem you need to get the head skimmed, then get the upgrade head gasket kit+a thing called a shim plate.this is a sorts the problem once and for all. the tech bit:the head is made of alloy and it expands more than the standard head gasket, the steel rings in the head gasket over time wears out a grove in the head hence the water enters the oil or vice vercer the shim mod has only been out a short bit. check out rover 416 shim plate on the net for more info hope this helps

Shim plates are not all what cracked up to be. I did try one, installed as per instruction. Ended up stripping it down to take off as the Stag adhesive did not seal. The Stag melted and allowed water to seep thru. Shims are not always required providing the skimming has not exeeded the limit indicators.

Hi. You need to get the car professionally checked, although the head gasket is a common fault it is not the only reason for coolant loss.

Well I dont know about using shim plates, I've done loads of Rover head gaskets right from the first models and I've never had one come back..... touch wood. As long as you use good quality parts and deal with the cause as well as the symptom then nothing should go wrong.

if the car is in nice condition like mine then get it fixed £200 to sort out 1 skim the head 2 get the shim plate+ and the upgraded head gaskit kit(not the standard one) 3 the parts=4 hour job 4 when you fill the car up with water/coolent turn the heater from cold to hot so you get no air trapped in the system this i`v done no end of times on 214/216/414/416/418s with no probs and thats it. once the shim plate is fitted its loads better. this mod has only been out a few years but not many people no about it oh well TTFN

hi everyone. i have a 216 cabriolet and am losing a fair bit of water from what seems to be coming out of the water pump area. however the engine is getting hot and water is bubbling in the expansion chamber and air squeezing through the lid yet the temp gauge says normal. doz this mean water isn't circulatin due to waterpump failur or an airlock and the water squeezing out of easiest route???? help wud b appreciated.

Hi. Obviously if you have a water leak it needs to be fixed immediately. If the pump is worn and leaking the water may not circulate correctly and you may have an air lock.

hi i wonder if anyone can help me? was driving in slow traffic this afternoon and noticed that when i took my foot off the accelerator the revs would drop down sometimes as low as 250rpm and then back up to 1000rpm a few times before idling, didnt think much of it until the temp guage increased but would then fall back down to normal. i carried on but after a while there was a pop and the engine stopped. looked under the bonnet and all of the coolant had gone from the reservoir (had checked 2 or 3 days ago and it was fine just needed topping up slightly), refilled the coolant and ran the engine and the water started to boil in one of the pipes but stayed cold in the pipe from (i think) engine to reservoir. creamy mayonnaise-esque goo around the oil filler cap but checked the dipstick and it looked ok. really hope this isnt a head gasket problem.

turn your heater to hot, & drive around the block with the filler cap off. Top up as needed. This should clear any air lock you may have. Look inside the filler/ expansion bottle when the engine is running, is there a constant stream of air bubbles? This is an indication that the head gasket is gone. Also look for any leaks. Was the fan running before it over-heated? if not check that it is not siezed & that the sensor & relay are good.

Hi. Before you do any of that, check that there is free flow returning to the expansion bottle via the small pipe at the top. If there isn't then it is possible that the ball bearing ( see other posts) is stuck and needs removing. This will cause an air lock and therefore engine damage.

My wife has a v reg 214si. It has just started to show some problems with starting. When she turns the key it sounds as if the battery is flat. The engine tries but doesn't turn over, just makes a sort of clunk sound. On second or third attempt it will usually start fine and runs fine although on a damp morning it can be a bit lumpy to start with. On her drive to work today it overheated and then cooled 6 times. This also happened 2 weeks ago and we found that the oil and water levels were very low. We topped up and it has been fine ever since until now. The car is in daily use and the heater seems to be fine Any suggestions welcome!

You either have a broken plate in the battery, poor connections or more likley a duff starter motor. Take it to a local Halfords or tyre/battery shop & have them drop test the battery. This will show a fault if there is one. Check the earth strap & pos cables to the engine/starter motor. If it does not turn over then hit the starter with a hammer or similar. If it works now then it is going to be worn out/sticky motor brushes. If you want to keep the wife happy then buy a new/recon one. With the engine running look into the filler bottle. Can you see coolant flowing back into the bottle from the small hose. If not you could have a suck bearing valve in the inlet manifold. Turn the heater to hot, drive the car around without the cap on to get any air out the system, top up as necessary. Now it`s hot can you see any small regular air bubbles in the filler bottle. If so then it`s your head gasket or cracked head. You need to keep a regular check on the coolant on these cars as they don't like overheating at all. You will be lucky if you don`t have a head gasket failure soon. Make sure that you are not loosing coolant from the pump or elsewhere. Also check the rad fan is working correctly.
