Well unfortunately it sounds like your head gasket has gone. It's not the end of the world, butmake sure whoever does the job uses new quality parts including head bolts, gasket set, timing belt kit, water pump, thermostat andget the head machined, even a slight distortion can result in needing to do the job again. Obviouly the system will need to be thoroughly flushed.

Well mine seems to be fixed. The coolant did need topping up after my test run, and have since taken it for a 25 mile run. The temp gauge stays just below the horizontal and the heater is back to its usual temperature. I still do not understand how a blocked pipe from the inlet manifold to the expansion bottle can give the symptoms that I had.
With regaurd to head gasket fixes. I have done various of my cars over the last 25 years ( I do run old cars) Dolomite Sprint,Nissan Sunny, Fiat 127, and my present Rover approx 40000 miles ago. I have never had a head skimmed, replaced a timing belt, water pump etc and have never had a problem. However the only one of these I would suggest you do is the timing belt as at 65000 miles it is about the right time.

Hi. the blocked pipe meant that coolant was not returning to the expansion tank and you got an air lock. Regarding you replacing head gaskets, it is not necessary to replace the water pump but makes sense when it is driven by the timing belt due to the labour content involved. I always fit a new timing belt kit and new head bolts too. Most head bolts are stretch bolts and should be replaced once removed. The same applies to getting the head machined, there is no point investing money in new parts if you are going to have to throw them away and do the job again because you wanted to save a few quid.As I repair cars for a living, I do not want them to go wrong after I have repaired them.

Yep, your head gasket is gone. The "cappuchino" stuff was an emulsified mix of oil & water. Not only are you looking at getting the head gasket replaced, but also the radiator as its almost certainly choked with this mess.

Thanks for your replies.
The MOT is up this month too. Nothing else wrong with the car except the head gasket. Im not going to pay to get it fixed. I had an escort and the head gasket went. Got it fixed at a reutable garage, they replaced alot of things for me but the car was never right again so i got rid.
Whats the best thing to do with the car now? .... Scrappy?

Well thats your own personal decision really.. But if the head gasket work were carried out correctly, theres no reason why the job shouldnt be sucessful. With older cars one really has to look at the overall condition of the car and not its market value. If its a case of having to spend a few euro on repairs, it can be seen as the cost of motoring to keep you on the road for the coming year or so. Its either that or the cost of depreciation of a new one.

Hi Mate,
I've got a rover 216 coupe N reg, I've had the Head Gasket replaced, and my car was over heating the temp would go up suddenly and when I pulled over I opened the bonnet and water was peeing out of the cap on the expanshion tank, once it settles I have to fill it up with more water. I have now changed the expanshion tank, the cap, the Radiator, the water pump the thermostat and it's still doing it I can't work out why the fan is working but i've now changed everything. any ideas? I hear you talking about the ball bearing is this in the Honda engine version of the rover aswell because that might be my problem but the way you have described it it sounds like you have the rover enginne. Any help would be great. Thanks.

we have a 1996 216sli bubble shape rover and laterly it has started to leak water in 2 places under the engine but can see where the leaks are, so we have to fill it up with water quite a bit aswell but it doesent leak all the time, as all this week its been fine but started dripping today and the week before every couple of days it would drip, and there is a slight petrol smell in where you put the water in,the exhaust is smoking quite abit aswell, just had the spark plugs change and oil filter changed and put k-seal in where the water goes 3-4 days ago please let me know what the problem is as im hopeing it isnt the head gasket as we want to sell it in april please can you put my name in your reply so i know your replying to me thanks dan

Dan, if the water is dripping down the front of the engine, by the drivers side wheel, then it is the water pump that is leaking. K-seal wont fix this as it is a rubber seal around a revolving shaft.

Without a thermostat(this controls engine temp) you will be hard pressed to get any heat at all and you will burn more petrol, so replace asap-then check heater valve between rear of engine and bulkhead these usually seize up and need replacing
But again without a stat in you wont get any heat while driving along

you need to put the thermostat in. the engine will take forever to warm up, which means no heater, and it's not good for the engine either.

Dan as I said, if you have water leaking from the front of the engine then it is your water pump.

no heat from the heater is either an air lock or the tap is stuck. If the cable is short at the tap then it's an air lock. Take the top heater hose off & run the engine let the water run into the hose from the heater pipe. Once you see a flow with no air then push the hose back on & you should have heat from the heater. You should also remove the ball in the filler vent hose/ inlet manifold.
