Hi you guys, not a major problem yet I hope!. My lad has a W plate 1.4 16v Rover 25, it has started to develope a cooling problem. The heater is only luke warm, the top rad hose is hot but the bottom is cold and the return hose to the expansion tank is cold. there is no coolent going back into the tank. One weird thing is that it drives ok with the temp gauge showing normal. Also no sludge visable in engine filler cap. A point in the right direction before its too late would be good. Thanks

Hi. sounds like you have an air lock in the system, check the ball bearing in the return pipe outlet at the manifold.

Thanks for the direction Terriers, the ball bearing was indeed stuck. this has now been freed and I`m currently on the third attempt to try and bleed the bugger. Not as easy as a Ford.

Well the problem is that you can get an air lock behind the thermostat which can cause problems. Just keep trying but make sure it doesn't over heat.

hi guys i have a problem with a rover 214 16v
its over heating.
ok lets list what i know (its not my car)
on start up the needle is on cold leaving it on tick over it moves up to half and stays there the fan cuts in as and when.
when driving from cold the needle starts on cold after driving for 10-15 mins the needle climbs pretty quickly to 3/4 the fan is flat out.If you stop for 5 mins and start it again the needle is back on cold.
when the needle is at 3/4 and the fan running all pipes are cold except the top rad hose.If the car is left running at 3/4 the expan tank will fill and over flow also it makes a weird noise.the car doesn't seem to be using any water there is no goo in the expan tank or the oil dip stick or cap.i can't decide if its the waterpump thermostat or air lock ???

any ideas ??????

ps i have no loss of power from the engine.

Try this, slacken the hose clip on the top heater hose & slip it down the hose. Pull the hose from the heater. Did you get any water come out? Often this is where the airlock is. You could try to fill the heater matrix & hose to the pump from here. You should run the engine holding the hose just off of the heater pipe so that the coolant runs from the heater into the hose. (assuming you have the heater to hot) You will get a few gulps of air & then when you get a continuous flow put the hose back on the heater pipe.
Works for me!

got a Rover 414 1997, started overheating oct 07, mix of oil and water everywere, garage replaced head gasket, did head skim, etc etc,
we have the same issue again just 5 months later, think the garage are just guessing as they have just replaced the rotor arm and dizzi cap,
done about an hours drive and needs more water, any advice anyone before i start my court claim.

if you take the car to another garage, they should be able to tell quite easily if the gasket has gone, by checking for any fumes in the expansion tank.
have you noticed any water/steam from the exhaust when the engine is hot, or looked in the expansion bottle and inside the oil filler cap for any contamination?

Hi I also have a Rover 100 Ascot E which had a failed head gasket, couldn't afford to replace the gasket but bought Steal Seal to try and fix it. This did not work, I spoke to them and they said that it was due to blowback, and I should have removed the spark plug from the offending cylinder at first warm up. I was reluctant to send out for another bottle so I baught K-Seal and tried that.

The Emulsion from the oil has gone and the water does not have scum forming in the same way but it is very murky. When driving it heatsd up very quickly, within 2 miles the temp guage is at half way, but does not go any higher when the water boils over.

The top hose is getting hot and there is air in the return pipe from the top hose to the bottle. It goes through tremendous amounts of water.

Does this mean that the sealants have not repaired the gasket or is it air locks, or a failed thermostat? can anyone shed light on it?
