Just took the car out at my lunch break and had a look under the bonnet. There dosent seem to be anything wrong with the oil, black in colour no mayo etc. The coolant seemed to be a bit brown and rusty and also there was no hot air coming out of the fans in the dash? The temp gauage was still sitting about 3/4 the way up...
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance..

Try running without the coolant cap on & top up as needed. See if this bleeds the heater & cures your problem. Take a look into the coolant bottle & see if any air bubbles are appearing.

Thanks for that Brian.. There are no bubbles in the coolant tank... Just some very brown looking water!! Is that anything to worry about? I cant seem to spot a connection for the fan, so I cant be certain that is even working.. Anymore more advice would be greatly apprecaited.
Thanks

it might be worth draining the cooling system, flushing it out, and then filling with water/anti-freeze.

Hi. The fan will more than likely be controlled by the temperature sensor, it is worth replacing these as there is no warning that they are going to fail until the engine overheats.
Check you have coolant returning to the expansion tank via the small top pipe.

Hi. As far as I'm aware, yes but there are other causes than this.
Is the car actually overheating or is it just running hotter ?
Engines run slightly hotter in hot weather due to the ambient air temperature.
Is it overheating in slow moving traffic or at a standstill ? if it is then it could be the fan switch / temperature transmitter.
I always remove the ball bearing on vehicles as prevention is better than a cure.
To check if the ball bearing is stuck or not, check to see if there is coolant returning to the expansion tank via the thin pipe at the top.

the engine is overheating.dausing the water escape through the expansion tank.their is a small but not continuous trickle back to the expansion tank. I also checked the heating controls,eg demister and it is only cold air am getting.thanks once again.

Well it could be an air lock, The best thing would be to remove the ball bearing anyway, that would eliminate one possible cause. Have you felt the radiator ? at normal operating temperature the top and bottom of the radiator should be roughly the same temperature.

k series engines prone to head gasket problems due to over heat.

1. The Engine overheats after hard driving.
2. Head warps slightly and head gasket blows
3. Water loss

The Permanent Fix for all k series engines is the following
1.Head Reskimmed (that makes sure head is no longer warped)
2. REMOVE thermostat permanently
3. Refit with new head gasket.

RESULT
1. Engine will take longer to heat up
2. Car heater not as hot HOWEVER

NO MORE HEAD GASKET PROBLEMS and car will run for years to come so a poor heater is a small price to pay.

Hi. It is not advisable to run without a thermostat, it will potentially use more fuel and could reduce the life of your engine, you will lose heater efficiency, if the cooling system and engine is maintained correctly there is no reason why it should cause problems.

I agree about using more fuel and as I've said about losing the car heater efficiency BUT if the head gasket goes and the head warps you can be faced with a garage bill of over £500 which is more than many of the members can afford. Its a case of keep your Rover running or have it scrapped the choice is obvious. The life of the engine slightly shortened or NO engine and NO car, 25 years in the motor trade and I still have to see a car driven without its engine.

As I said, if the car is maintained correctly then the engine will last with no problems, I have never had one return after I have replace the head gasket and my customers still have the same economy, warm up time and heater output that was designed. I have been in the motor trade for only 22 years but what's 3 years among friends .

Guys, another point to mention is that the radiator should be checked for internal blockage after a head gasket failure. I replaced a rover head gasket a few months ago and found that the radiator too had suffered in that the narrow tubes were choked solid with mayonnaise. Replacement was the only cure.

Hello all,

Just had my Rover 114 checked over at a Garage and got told the head gasket was fine.. The radiator however did need replacing, I managed to get this done at a good price so felt fairly happy! Whilst driving the car this week it is spot on when driving without traffic but when im stuck in it the temp gauge still rises up to 3/4 high. Once I get moving again the car cools down to half way again.

Is this anything to get concerned about? Just a bit miffed after spending money to get it fixed!

Have you checked to see if the fan is kicking in, get the engine up to normal operating temp, let car idle in drive and watch for cooling fan switching on, if it doesn't thats your prob. Get someone with know how or garage to check for faulty fan or sensor.

i wouldnt do that ,,, u must have a prob ,, i can just see u standing waiting on the fan kicking in ,, and somthing else bad happening... if u have the money take it to a garage ,,if not do some research,, here is not a bad place to start.

As long as you keep an eye on the temperature there will be no problem. It is a good idea to replace the temperature transmitter as a routine item.

Thanks for the response... The temp gauge consistently runs close to the top in traffic, is there potential for any engine issues if I am sitting in traffic for any length time? Also the temp transmitter, is that a costly item to replace?

Many thanks in advance
