Oh and better to remove the key and lock the doors if you leave the car that way no one can get in it. DURRRRRR
I might need to get your advice on how to operate the central locking as well.. Thanks Dresser
About 2 months ago I bought an N reg 214 SI for £400 (11 months MOT still on it) and it ran fine for a couple of weeks. However in the 3rd week it started making a funny burning smell from the engine and a worrying rattling sound was making an appearance. I noticed that the water level was dropping drastically needing refilling every 3 days or so. I stupidly continued to drive and then one night the rattling noise became louer and louder, the burning smell because stronger and then suddenly engine just died as I was driving. The RAC came out and showed me a leak in one of the pipes. The guy suggested that the engine had semi-seized. Got towed home and a mechanic neighbour took a look at it the next day for me, he did something to the inlet manifold (apologies for I know nothing about engines etc!) and the car is now drivable again (yay), however the water reservoir needs refilling every 5 days or so, so Im concerned that there is still a leak. The car is booked in for a service on Saturday (a bit overdue I know), but I wondered if anyone could tell me does this sound like a head gasket problem? Would it need replacing? Thanks in advance! Sean
Not anything you can do about warped block unless you fancy paying for it to be skimmed, certainly wont be cheap and fairly good chance other damage has occured as its warped (takes a lot of overheating to wreck the block) but as suggested by your mechanic best to replace engine I am a bit surprised he risked it with a warped block as they never work properly after repair, least i`ve never known one to...
And i was shocked by all the horror stories i found... "Overheating?.....HeadGasketFailiure.....Cold air in blowers.....HGF.....Tyrewear on inside edge......HGF" lol ok i made that last one up. But alot of people jumped to the conclusion that Any problem with the K-series must ultimately be the headgasket. My temp gauge never ever went above the 'normal' middle temp, but it was losing lots of water due to overheating. Just stopping at traffic lights would see the reservior dump most of its water on the floor. The fan never kicked in to cool down the engine. I unplugged the the temp sensor near the airfilter, and the fan stayed permenantly on, so the fan was ok. A friend of mine tested the cooling system pressure, that was eliminated, it held its pressure. He pointed out that its an old car, and it was losing the water through the reservior filler cap. The seal looked ok, but it was obviously worn. So I went to the scrapyard and picked up a newer type of cap, replacing the old black cap for a newer yellow type of cap, he even let me have it for free! So through process of elimination it pointed towards the temp sensor, a common problem i am told. So a little trip to Sureparts later, and a 2 minute job to replace it. The part was £12.50, and it was on the shelf, yes it just is that common. I flushed the cooling system out just for good measure (The water tank is clean, and so is the water, no yellow gunk, and the oil has always been clean too) I started her up, and just let it sit there for 10minutes, and sure enough, the fan kicked in!! It span for a minute, then went off! That was the 1st time i have ever seen the engine cool itself since i bought it. Strangely when the fan kicked in, the temp gauge still hadnt moved past the middle, but the engine was obviously hot, so what the gauge on the dash is for nobody knows, it must not be a temp gauge, it must be a HGF gauge....eg: when its goes red, ur engine is s%^&$ed. :D So im happy now, i no longer fear stationary traffic! muawhaahah. Nice little car for £350. The person who sold it to me must have thought the same as everyone else....HGF, and was glad to get rid of it. Im sure if i had got caught in a long tailback on the M6 it would have blown up. So if your Rover overheats and loses water, replace the temp sensor and filler cap. Then you can enjoy a truly wonderful and reliable engine!
