Can somebody please throw any light on my situation?
I was looking for a car just before christmas. A friend of a friend is a dealer and was keeping a look out for something 'tasty' for me. He had just bought a Landrover Freelander 1.8 (The 50th year edition)
Now, it wasnt what I was really after. But as I needed a car & it seemed to be good value, I decided that I would buy it for now & sell it in the summer. (as the roof comes off etc etc)
Anyway, 5 weeks after buying the car I'm driving along the motorway at a steady 80 when suddenly all the power disappears & smoke starts to blow from the exhaust.
I phoned a friend of mine who is a mechanic and am told that it is probably the head gasket or the head block.
Tonight I have been told that this was featured on Watchdog as a design fault & apparently they were putting steel bolts into the aluminium block.
After looking on this website & seeing all your stories about LR Main dealers, Im pretty worried to say the least. You see all of the stories are from people who bought the car from a main dealer & then returned it. But I am wondering how I fair because I bought the vechile second hand.
Does anyone know if I have a leg to stand on?
Could I return it to the original LR dealer?
Can it just be returned to Land Rover and repaired as it is a design fault?
I would be over the moon if someone could give me any helpful advice.

It shouldn't make any difference that you bought it from a non Land Rover dealer.

Basically, your claim is with Land Rover not the dealer, although initally they should be the ones that put your claim forward on your behalf.

The only getout Land Rover might use is if the vehicle hasn't been serviced regularly at a LR dealer.

I would take it back to the dealer that did the last service, and ask them to make a claim on your behalf.

Apparently this is a very common problem with this engine, it`s the same engine used in some rover cars, i don`t think the problem is the head gasket but the cylinder head itself which has a design flaw in it, you don`t say how old the vehicle is but i think freelanders came with a 3 year warranty but as the other member has stated if the servicing has not been adhered to you may end up with a hefty bill.

I have been looking for a smaller 4x4 for sometime now and always fancied a Freelander. Luckily for me my brother-in-law is a Land Rover mechanic, when I asked him to accompny me to see what I thought was an absoloute bargain, a 1.8EXi 5 Door, FLRSH 99T, 48,000 miles, mint condition, he simply said dont bother, "it will blow up, guarenteed"..He told me he and his collegues are deluded with Freelander work on a weekly basis, changing engines or head gaskets, apparentley this car went out to Joe Public with 15 known design faults...Absoloutley scandalous, so from a guy in the know unless you buy a TD4, walk away...His advice to me was buy a Honda CRV, which I did and can hand on heartedly say it is awsome, trouble free, and looks the part.....Take heed from this site and leave the troublesome beast well alone....

Let me share my experience....

I have a Freelander, 60k miles, head gasket blew last january (almost on cue ...now that Im aware of this problem!)

Anyway, been chasing Landrover for almost 7 months...they eventually ageed to pay for parts, but refused labour costs (2/3rd of bill....how they can accept liability for the parts but not the cost to replace is beyond me...) on basis that I had the engine fixed by my local Ford dealer (I couldnt physically move it to a landrover one....)

Anyway, I thought Id take their offer.....but it has proven impossible to get the money from them. They have a crazy system that they need to reinburse via a dealer....and trying to get a dealer to work for you is impossible - still havent received the money...

And then to add insult to whole thing? Head gasket has just gone again & Im facing a write off....

Anyone going to Legal advice I am happy to help, support. I believe that LR should accept liability for a design flaw. Its not acceptable to wash hands of a recognised fault

David

David, I would be grateful for legal advise. My mother has a free lander and the head gasket has gone after less than 35000 miles. The car is currently in a Land Rover dealership under investigation. I am guessing that the dealership will try to avoid paying for the repairs.
If you can offer any advice I would be very grateful.

Tara

I have just had mine head gasket repaired, or more to the point they had to change the whole engine. If the car is still within it's warranty period, they will repair free of charge. I hope this helps.

Landrover also allowed post warranty claims to deal with what is obviously an exceptional problem but they have criteria for this which they wont divulge. there is clearly a design problem given the sheer quantity of cases. Also there are substantial repeat cases and also many newer models going down with the various modifications fitted.....

patch it up, and sell it as fast as you can, to a franchised dealer. head gasket is a big problem, but its only the symtoms of a really poor engine, with serious design faults. look out also for gearbox trouble, (selecting reverse), uneven tyre wear, (due to 4x4 bias to front wheels), electric window mechanism failure, (all windows) leaky sunroofs. the list goes on and on. in 1997 the free lander went into production with 15 known design faults, some have been sorted, but keep the car long enough and you'll undoubtably find a few. if you're reading this, and considering buying a free lander - don't !

MY S REG FREELANDER WITH 70K ON CLOCK HAS JUST GONE IN FOR A SERVICE TO THE GARAGE I BROUGHT IT FROM 6 MONTHS AGO. THE GARAGE HAVE CONTACTED ME TO SAY THE HEAD GASKET HAS GONE. I TOOK OUT A GILT WARRANTY FROM THE GARAGE AS I WAS AWARE OF DESIGN PROBLEMS. THE WARRANTY COMPANY WILL NOT ACCEPTED LIABILTY AND WANTED TO ASSESS THE VEHICLE. WHEN I STARTED TO QUESTION THIS AS MY WARRANTY DOES COVER HEAD GASKETS ( AS LONG AS IT'S NOT W&T) I WAS TOLD THE WARRANTRY COMPANY WANTED THE ENGINE STRIPPED DOWN BEFORE A DECISION WOULD BE MADE. THE GARAGE GOT MY PERMISSION TO DO THIS. AN HOUR LATER THE GARAGE RING TO SAY THEY HAVEN'T STRIPPED THE ENGINE DOWN BUT HAVE CARRIED OUT A GAS TEST?? AND THIS SHOWS THAT MECHANICALLY THERE IS NO FAILURE?? SO THE WARRANTY COMPANY AT THIS TIME WILL NOT HONOR A NEW HG. SO NOW THE GARAGE ARE SAYING THE HG ISN'T BLOWN BUT ON IT'S WAY OUT AND THE CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE, I HAVE A 2 YEAR OLD SO QUERIED THIS AGAIN AND THEY ASSURE ME THE VEHICLE IS SAFE TO DRIVE. I HAVE 6 MONTHS OF WARRANTY LEFT ON THE VEHICLE AND NO WAY OF KNOWING WHEN THIS HG COULD BLOW. DO ANY OF YOU OUT THERE HAVE ANY ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE ME AS I FEEL WORRIED ABOUT THIS SITUATION?

My wife has a 2001 Freelander, 38,000 miles, used mainly for shopping etc. and 6 months out of warranty. Guess what, Blown HG leaving a bill for at least £500. Garage says "you expect this in a Freelander". I have had many cars with mileage over twice this and have never come across this problem before so what rubbish is this?

Does anyone know what the chances of success are in getting some of the cost back form Land Rover please?

how can garage say head gasket gone then get permission from warranty co to strip then ring you to say theve done a sniff test and its alright for now

head gaskets only serve a purpose to seal two components together so they are air/water/oil tight as the components cant be manufactured as one casting to say therefore that its gone and then hasnt is balonny

i would suggest you personally ring the warranty co and ascertain whether the original conversation with the garage for a strip down actually happened. If it did why did it give permission for a strip down which to me means they will pay for everything and then the garage sniffed it and didnt proceed very confusing to me does your vehicle have a self healing headgasket and if it does let me know and we can go into business marketing these and we will be millionaires this time next year

as a final aside i like( warranties direct) they do what it says on the tin ive never heard of wear and tear on a headgasket before
hope some or all helps
