I have just read about your Freelander serengeti. I also have a serengeti which I bought new April 2002. It has been fully serviced and has done 40.000 and guess what? The head gasket has gone. Ive had it fixed but not by land rover. I'm going to try and pursue land rover. There are loads of sites on the net which detail numerous owners of post 2001 freelanders where the gasket has gone. I think Land Rover modified the thermostat in 2001 because of the problem but it clearly has not resolved it. I have spoken to land Rover and they told me your dealer can make an after warranty claim on your behalf I would be interested in how you get on with your claim

Hi ccPlease contact us by going to http://freelander.webhop.net Land Rover paying for the repair is an admission of the design problems (unless you are covered by a warranty). It would be useful to know the extent of the damage and the goodwill gesture by Land Rover. Of course they may not be so forthcoming next time.

Mine too was out of warranty when a 'new' (recon) engine was fitted, however this has failed twice since. The only change that has been made to try to prevent this problem is adding a remote thermostat and new design of gasket. There was no recall for this. Besides this was added on mine when the second engine was put in. It had gone again in a few thousand miles.

I wish I knew that this site was aound before I was stupid enough to go out and buy a used Freelander. I have just got back from being towed home by the AA. I bought the 1.8 XEI S Wagon petrol version on 1st July from a small local dealer. I could only afford a T reg (1999) with 125,000 on the clock. I went down south in it on 23rd July and on my way home today it just stopped dead, no warning lights no temperature gauge warning nothing! The dealer gave me a warranty for 18 months parts and labour but it has a maximum clause in it of £200, I guess its going to cost more than that to fix it. Does anyone know if I have any rights to ask for my money back with only having the car for 28 days??? Any help would be appreciated.

I had a new (or reconditioned) engine back in April and luckily LR payed 100% since then I have been dubious about driving it any long distances. Recently I have had a banging underneath, which seems to be getting worse, my dad thinks it could be the drive shaft - has anybody else had this problem.?I haven't rushed to get it fixed as I have been trying my hardest to ged rid of the car and part exchange for another vehicle, but with not much luck, some garages just say NO without even looking at it, others just offer a ridiculous amount.

Just a reminder to all "Land Rover Freelander Head Gasket Failure" victims in Australia. If you have made a claim against Land Rover Australia and are unhappy with the response, you should put your concerns in writing to the ACCC office in your state. Go to http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.p......fromItemId/3634 for postal addresses. The ACCC is now collecting data on this issue and will pursue the case if there are sufficient complaints indicating a pattern.

reply to Von. That cap of £200 likely to be unenforceable against you as a consumer. Sale of Goods Act applies you have a good legal right. However you need to convince the dealer of that

After no joy with LR I've had to put a recon engine it mine to get back on the road and try and sell it! After 2 months of trying I gave up looking for a second hand engine and went for a recon. Got it from B & H Autokraft in Doncaster - good price IRO £1K, its only been in the car a couple of days so it too early to comment or recommend them.Anyone got any advice on the best way to get rid of the car?? private, trade in, e-bay, auction, etc, etc,???

I would like to post a copy of the letter I have forwarded to the Land Rover dealer currently pursuing me for payment for repairs.Good Luck to ALL who face similar difficulties. 30 August, 2005 Shields Land Rover 1000 Kennishead Road Glasgow G53 7RA Dear Sir or Madam: I am writing with regards to the 1.8 Land Rover Feelander Xi (Reg. V687 KGE) I purchased in February 2004. The car had covered only approx. 32 000 miles upon purchase and cost £11,000. I was mistakenly under the impression that the Approved Land Rover would be a safe, rugged, durable car, which would carry myself, and my family over many miles. Furthermore I invested an additional sum of £900 + VAT to have leather upholstery fitted, as it was my intention to keep the car for a lengthy period of time. It transpires however that the vehicle in question was anything but reliable and a catalogue of faults have occurred over the 18 months I have owned the car, as follows: 1) March 2004 Cylinder head gasket failure Repaired by Shields Land Rover under warranty. No offer was made to replace the engine of the car under 12 month purchase warranty. A Courtesy Car was provided by Landrover Assistance. 2) May 2004 Exhaust failure Replaced by Shields Land Rover only after short dispute, as this repair was not covered under warranty. This should have been checked as part of the Approved Land Rover scheme. I understand from Shields Land Rover that it had been scheduled for replacement prior to my taking possession of the vehicle and had been overlooked. No Courtesy Car made available for my use by Shields Land Rover. 3) March 2005 Driver window electric motor failure Replaced under 12 month purchase warranty by Shields Land Rover. No Courtesy Car made available for my use by Shields Land Rover. 4) April 2005 Car battery failure Replaced by myself Please note battery contacts had not been secured prior to or during window motor replacement. 5) June 2005 Second Cylinder head gasket failure Repaired by Shields Land Rover with parts supplied with the Good Will of Land Rover Manufacturer only after an assessment of the age and service history of the vehicle. I was informed that this would carry a labour charge of £450, which I reluctantly agreed to pay, as I require a car under the conditions of my employment. No Courtesy Car made available for my use by Shields Land Rover. 6) July 2005 Engine failure - Only after repair of the second failed cylinder head gasket was I informed by Shields Land Rover that this and not the first failure, had resulted in irreparable damage to the engine, which now required replacement. Please note at this point the vehicle had covered only 46 000 miles (14 000 miles since purchase). This repair would require another petition for further Good Will on the part of Land Rover Manufacturer, who finally agreed to supply the parts required. This repair would carry a further £400 labour cost. Repairs 4 & 5 took in excess of 5 weeks to complete due to the delivery of several damaged cylinder head gaskets. I have yet to ascertain whether the extent of engine damage can be established without prior repair of the cylinder head gasket. No Courtesy Car made available for my use by Shields Land Rover. 7) August 2005 Impending Clutch Failure During the replacement of the engine I was informed by Shields Land Rover the vehicle clutch could also fail at any time and could be repaired at a further cost of £185 at this point or approx. £750 at a later date. Please note I had not experienced any difficulty with the clutch prior to the second cylinder head gasket failure, however the fault was apparent upon return of the vehicle I was informed by Shields Land Rover that if I made no contribution to repairs 4 & 5 above that the work carried out would not be subject to any warranty and as such should any faults occur (with the new engine installed by Shields Land Rover) I would be required to pay all costs for any subsequent repairs. Upon collection of the vehicle I was not approached to surrender any payment. As such I assumed I would be invoiced for this or that any payment had been waived. Otherwise surely the vehicle would not be returned to myself. I have subsequently received an invoice for £998.75 (inclusive of VAT which had not been mentioned during any discussions) for repairs 4 & 5, which I have yet to pay. I have been contacted by Mr. J. Cooper of Shields Land Rover pursuing payment of this invoice with the inference that I somehow retrieved my vehicle by underhanded means or in fact contrived to avoid payment. Please note this is not the case. The above faults left me with no confidence in the reliability of the vehicle, forcing me to trade in against another car for the sum of £4250, 3 years ahead of schedule. A depreciation of in excess of £6750, over the 18 month period of ownership; apparently due to trade understanding of the inherent faults this model carries. It is my contention that the vehicle I purchased from Shields Land Rover was not fit for the purpose it is intended for, or even road-worthy. I certainly did not expect an Approved Land Rover with such a low mileage to experience the numerous fundamental mechanical failures listed above. This is a poor advertisement for a vehicle sold under the premise of durability. This vehicle was never taken Off Road or tested in any way under my ownership. If this is a typical example of an Approved Land Rover I feel it is my duty to inform any potential purchasers of the risks in buying any product sold under this label, by any means possible. I understand from subsequent research that I am one of many who experienced identical problems with this model and would direct you to the following web address for further examples of the misery other Landrover Freelander owners have been subjected to. http://www.preloved.co.uk/fuseaction-foru......1/4cf87374.html I understand from Mr. J. Cooper that should I fail to pay the sum invoiced, it is the intention of Shields Landrover to pursue payment legally. I welcome the prospect of this, as a legal action will add to the publicity surrounding the obvious fundamental mechanical faults present in this model and hopefully alert potential purchasers to the quality of vehicle and level of aftercare a client can expect from Shields Land Rover. I request a copy of the details of ALL repairs carried out to the 1.8 Land Rover Feelander Xi (Reg. V687 KGE) under my ownership. In summation I feel that as the retailer of this vehicle, Shields Land Rover should carry some if not all of the costs incurred above; as no contribution to the out with warranty repairs have been made by Shields Land Rover to date. If the manufacturer deems the fault significant enough to supply a new engine, then surely the retailer has an obligation to install it, as this is surely an indication that the engine in the vehicle sold to myself was not fit for purpose. Sincerely, Stuart King
