Good on you Stuart!

As you now know there are a lot of us out there who have had to suffer unreliability and financial loss as a result of owning this despicable vehicle.

I only hope that eventually LR will be called to task.

In the meantime contact [Log in to view email] with full details; I’m sure that they will be interested in the outcome.

Regards,

Mark

Some cheerful news: My wife's 1.8 petrol Freelander developed ominous coolant loss over the past few weeks with no obvious sign of a leak; it is just three and a half years old (hence just out of warranty) with 48,000 miles and was bought two year ago from a LR dealer, having been one of their customer loan cars from new. It went in for the 48k service with the same dealer and sure enough they rang to say the head gasket was failing; replacement would be £700+. (Not what I needed as I am moving house this week!). I was wary this might be the problem and some research beforehand led me to this site, so I was well prepared to argue my case ie full dealer service history, aware of design fault, had sight of the technical bulletin that LR had issued about the problem etc, and sure enough Landrover UK (as opposed to the dealership) agreed to pay 100% of parts and labour. In all fairness, they were extremely courteous and helpful, but I am sure my being prepared helped enormously. Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far and especially to Lynda for her particular advice.

Just read message from flying doc
I.m in correspondence with L.R about my 3yr 4 months old freelander head gasket went. I've received letter today saying landrover do not consider this to be common problem.
I'd like to see the technical bulletin the L.R issued.
Can you advise where I can get a copy.

HI Mark,

Could you mail me a PDF copy also.

Exactly the same problem, 60,000 miles car, 98 Freelander 1.8i, car just died. LR dealer saying its out of warranty! Cost me E3,000 to replace with a reconditioned 03 engine plus car hire for a week. I'm hoping to go back to the dealer and pursue a claim based on what I've been reading here. Any advice appreciated. But the PDF of that report would be great!
Ann

Hi all,

I drive a V6 model and am suffering the same problems as all of you. My car 2001 had a new engine in Feb last year and then spent most of March to May in the dealers with what i believe as related prolems or problems caused by a poor repair. Everything seemed to be ok and since i moved to london in august last year, i really havent been using it much until last friday, when it suddenly over heated - althought there was coolant visible - too my suprise - it smelled like it did before.

I was fortunate to be just down the road from a landrover dealer, they had a look and the mechaninc thought it might be a head gasket - however as the new engine was fitted over 12 months ago it is not under any warranty !!!

The dealership were really great and they have said they will put it to landrover as a good will fix, dependent upon further investigation.

If it is a new engine then it will be the third the car has had and its only done 27000 miles.

Can any of you give me any advice on how to approach landrover - i just emailed the action committee but my email was bounced back - are they still going.

I bought the car from a dealer and the dealers name is in the log book as the previous owner - could i have a case with them?

MAny thanks

Nick

With reference to the action committee, did you have the right address? - [Log in to view email]

I've just sent a test mail and it didn't get bounced.

MArk,

I sent a second email not long after and this is yet to have been bounced - so maybe it was just an error.

Thanks

Nick

Hi all,
I need some advice. Purchased my freelander 4 months ago, a 51 reg from a landrover dealer. Last sunday, on my way out for the day, driving along a busy motorway, the engine cuts out. Managed to get it going again, but no where safe to stop, no warning lights appeared. Then it started to lose speed and I could see smoke appearing in my rear view mirror. I pulled over, just before a junction, the car wouldnt have made it any further, and I called Land Rover for road side assistance. 2 hours later, the recovery truck arrived and took me home. He said it sounds like a head gasket problem, which at the time I had no idea about. Land Rover have had the car a week, and are now saying it needs a new engine, and even though we have the full approved warranty, they're saying they will not pay for it, as I didn't stop straight away when it first cut out, which was just a matter of minutes earlier. They're offering to pay £600 towards the head gasket, but saying we have to pay £3000 for the new engine. I'm not accepting this without a fight, I'm not a mechanic, and it didn't once enter my head to stop immediately, on a motorway which had no hard shoulder.
Any suggestions?

I am sure you will get plenty of answers to your posting, you need to read through all the back pages and you will see you are in the same situation as a great deal of other people. I felt sick when I read your [post as I know exactly what you are going through I think you should contact trading standards you couldnt possibly stay on a motorway lane and acted out of pure saftey.Your car was under warranty , mine was not.Landrover paid for two of my engines but would not pay for the third. They have huge design faults, push Landrover to pay and get rid of it.Please join our action committee details on previous posts. Good luck. Karen

Does anyone know a qualified 4WD mechanic with comprehensive knowledge of the head gasket issue who would be prepared to write a technical dossier that we can submit to Trading Standards and the ACCC?

What is needed is a detailed engine diagram such as found in LR's Tech bulletin 0036, outlining the fault, and a mechanics interpretation of the fundamental design failure of the k-series engine. The Tech bulletins are available at the address below.

The report would also have to explain why repair is not an option in the majority of cases, and why engine replacement is the only solution. The report would also need to include time / labour and cost estimates.

Although there is unlimited anecdotal evidence of the HGF problem, our claims need to be supported by hard technical evidence from independent sources. If we can gather enough hard evidence it would be impossible for LR to ignore reality. This would also assist Trading Standards and the ACCC.

Thanx for your advice, Karen. I emailed trading standards, but as yet, haven't heard anything back. I've also just emailed land rover to say we want to appeal against their decision to reject the claim, but before I appeal I want a copy of thier report on the car. So just have to wait now. AHhhhhh I just want to scream!

Has anyone had any luck claiming from land rover for the head gasket problem when the vehicle has been repaired but not at a
L R Dealer. It was just a few months out of warranty and L R Won't pay as they say they can't validate the repair.
