Hi

I purchased a Freelander in November(3 month warranty) and the cylinder head has blown. It has now been with my mechanic for 4 weeks as apparemtly cylinder heads for the 1.8 petrol K series are like gold dust, can anyone point me in the right direction for a new or reconditioned one?

Thanks in advance

My HG went as well and it damaged the whole engine. Land Rover did pay 100% - so do push if they try and get away with 50% - I hope you have a full service history as that would be one of there get outs.

This may give somone hope ......... I too suffered a gasket failure, engine seized also ( petrol 5 door GS 3yr 7 month old, warranty expired). I got on the internet to 'tool up' for my visit to the dealership the next day and found this forum most informative.
When I got to the dealership, I was asked if I had owned it since new, Yes I replied. Then I was asked if it had been serviced by a landrover dealership since new, Yes, I replied.
Take these keys for the demo TD4, and we will call you when it is fixed he said. What will it cost I said, well probably nothing but I had best say 75% chance you will pay nothing. I was astonished. Off I went, 6 days later new gasket and a replacement head was on FREE (I did have to buy 2 belts = £15) no labour nothing.

Apparently my bill could have been as much as £1800 !!!!!!

I must say I was nothing bu impressed, and felt exceptionally lucky.

Hi,
I bought my new Freelander 3dr 1.8S hardtop in May01 from a local Landrover dealer and have had it regularly serviced by them as per the handbook. Apart from several niggly faults in the first year, I had 3 years 7 months and 32k of trouble-free motoring...that is until Jan05. In the last 3 months I have had to have the front differential replaced, the gearbox replaced and the head gasket went last weekend. So far I have to pay 250 towards the differential but so far gearbox and head gasket replaced free courtesy of Landrover UK (negotiated by the dealer).
I have however told my dealer I do not wish to ever see the vehicle again and am currently waiting for their response while they wait for the head gasket to arrive from Rover (major delays, wonder why?).
I will keep you posted, but I went out and bought another car yesterday and have no intention of accepting this vehicle back!!
More than happy to join a group action...?Watchdog...as this vehicle is definitely not of mechandiseable quality.

They only had my car for 3 days, they had to replace the head because of the damage caused by the HG blowing. There is no shortage of these parts according to my dealer.i am still waiting for a reponse from Land Rover concerning the £355 i ahd to pay.

My 1.8i Freelander (Reg 51) decided to let go on Saturday 14th May 05 on the M25 between junction 10-9 as I was taking friends to Gatwick Airport. I live at junction 20!

Before I started to panic, I called Land Rover Assistance. Don't panic they said!! We'll get it sorted. In the mean time quick call to brother in Law to rescue my passengers. LRA came back to me 30mins later with a solution for the trip to LGW but we changed it to just rescue the car and me.

So there I am sat at the road side waiting for the truck to arrive, couple of police cars stopped but left me to it when I told them I was waiting for recovery. Then the recovery vehicle arrived. Attached the car to the winch. HAlf way one and there is a big bang!! The recovery vehicle has broken down!! Oh my God!! Just my luck. Second recovery vehicle called eventually arrives, leave the scene 3 hours after I called them!!!! Now arrive at Chipperfield Land Rover after the service department has closed. Sorry sir, please call on Monday after 8am, I then leave to collect my hire car after upsetting the salesman by telling him the back of the new Discovery looks like a Transit Van!! I know how to make friends and influence people!!

So I call on Monday at 8.15am. Sorry sir your car is not under warrenty, we will TRY and look at it sometime this week, but whatever happens we will not be able to do anything till 25th May (Yes 11 days after the got it!) after a bit of pressure they tell me they've taken a look under the bonnet and the dip stick has melted, so looks like you need a new engine!! So what will that cost I ask? Not sure he says!! I say this is a known problem, you must have done this before, give me a ball park figure!! About £3000 - £3500 he says!! Oh my God I say.

HELP. Has anyone else managed to get some or all of the cost of this done? If so, how did you go about it? I have already promised myself not to mention the Transit comment again!!

Any help or tips would br greatly appreciated.

Message for Duncan

I was told roughly the same amount for my car to be repaired - I did not pay a penny. Land Rover paid the whole lot - Do you have a full service history? Although this should not make a difference - I was told by a guy that worked at the garage that this is a get out or Land Rover. Let me know how you get on. Lynda

Hi Lynda

Many thanks for your response.

How did you go about getting them to pay for it? My plan is to get them to do it then keep arguing about payment until they have had enough of me!!

I bought the car at a year old from the same Land Rover dealer who has it in their service department at the moment. The first year of it's life, it was a Land Rover company car. It therefore received it's services from Land Rover prior to me buying it and ever since, all of it services have been with the dealer I bought it from.

Any tips on how I can ensure that they pay for it, and not me?

Many thanks in aticipation.

Duncan

Hi Lynda,

Mine is almost the exactly the same age and milage, with FSH (although not Land Rover) but mine was bought privately. The engine is completely seized so needs replacement.
Can you offer any advice for getting LR to pay for repair as with yours?

Thanks

Matt

I asked my dealer to make and out of warranty goodwill claim quoting the watchdog programme that was broadcast concerning the Freelander HG problem. They did and i got 75% towards the costs, although i am arguing for the rest.

I don't think it should matter if you did not buy your car brand new. I was saying to someone the other day - how can they have one rule for one person and one for another. You have your full service history so they should pay 100%. Just push (without winding the garage up) as much as you can.
Good luck and let me know the out come.

Hi there

Thanks for that.

I have told them to go ahead and to repair ir, not mentioned payment, not said I will or will not pay them and will not be signing anything. The dealership have quoted me £3658 and have emailed LR which takes a few days to get a response apparently.

I am sure the dealership will be more inclined to put pressure on LR once they have repaired it and no one want to pay for it!!

I will post the outcome.

Duncan

This is ridiculous! We should all be taking out a class action against Landrover or at the very least making a joint approach to Watchdog to ask for a review of this catastrophic consumer ripoff by Landrover!! How the hell are they getting away with this?

I purchased my Freelander new in 2000 from a Landrover dealership in Guildford, Surrey. All was well with regular servcing until last month (May 2005) when the HG went with 54,000 miles on the clock! I had just placed an order with Land Rover for a new Discovery 3 and was aware of the HG problem with the Freelander as I too had seen the BBC watchdog programme a few years back and my wife had also found this website. At first Land Rover were only prepared to pay 75% of the repair costs, but I threatend to cancel my order for the Discovery and this managed to alter their decision and I got the full 100%. The fact is that this fault is recognised by L.R. and they have admitted its a design fault, so anyone with this problem should get I feel 100% of the repair costs paid regardless.
