Hi to all

The code applies to all vehicle new or secondhand if sold by a member of the SMMT.

Hi Terry

Sorry no I don't but I'm sure if anyone has they'll soon tell us.

I think a previous poster has said they are going this route.

Hi all.

I've had my 1999 Freelander now for a year, I heard about the notorious headgasket failure soon after I got the landy. I did some internetsurfing and found a very cheap and easy solution to this problem, on a Lotus Elise website. To prevent the overheating of the engine head you should get a reviced thermostat with hoses from a 2002 1.8 Freelander, I'm told it costs about 50 quid and takes about half an hour to install. I did a similar modification to my cooling system and I don't have to worry about this anymore

hi ,
don,t wish to worry you but my freelander is a 2002 model with the modified hose kit. Gasket went at 40,000 miles. L/R issued bulletin 036 in 2004 dealing with the problem. Its still happeningwith the modified gasket and thermostat.

Hi eythoro,

The head gasket problem has more to do with a design defect in the cylinder sleeves than the placement of the thermostat. The likelyhood of the cylinder sleeves dropping below the block face is aknowledged in Land Rover's tech advice 0036. According to Land Rover's bulletins, once this happens the head can no longer be successfully sealed and engine replacement is the only option.

If there was a cheap easy fix that actually worked, Land Rover's workshops would be using it rather than routinely doing engine replacements.

Are you sure your engine is the original? I suggest you do an engine number check. Maybe yours has already had the treatment.

Check out the preceeding posts to get an idea of the scale of this problem. You may wish to reconsider the wisdom in owning a k-series Freelander.

Cheers.

Further to my previous post about the gasket failure and subsequent new engine requirement on my 2001 V6 Freelander.

I have reqad through all of the back posts on this site and am still furious at the 'wipe our hands of it' attitude of the Garage where I purchased the vehicle and have had it serviced annually.

Although Land rover have agree to pay 75%, this has still left me £1,500 out of pocket. Has anyone successfully pursued a Sales Of Good act claim against any Land Rover dealer yet?

And if so, can I get in contact to prep on what I need to do to undertake a similar course of action?

Cris,

Your e-mail address is not working. I have had my message bounced twice.

Do you have an alternative address I can contact you on?

Hi ethoro

The poor design of the engine doesn't show as easily in the 2-seater Lotus,
simply because it doesn't have to work as hard as in a Freelander with the
heavier chassis and added load, thanks to the Intermediate Reduction Drive.
True, the 2002 and onwards hose configuration is fitted standard on all 1.8
Freelanders, and now also retrofitted on all previous models when cyl head
or engine work is undertaken. This moves the thermostat away from the engine
block and closer to the radiator, rerouting coolant flow around the engine.
A slight improvement for sure, but by no means a failsafe. Instances of
premature head gasket and/ or complete engine failure still occur frequently
and remains a common problem on these vehicles. I urge you to regularly
monitor the coolant level and condition.

Sorry to hear about your problems with Land Rover, please do not buy a discovery,
if you want quality and reliability go for a japanese diesel.
I had to mail you as I do not want to see anyone chuck money away.
I work in the motor trade here in Holland.
Good luck
Dominic

Would you mind answering a couple of questions?

Which part of the country are you in?
Was the HG still gone when you sold it & did you p/ex it?
If so did the dealer reduce the value of your Freelander because of the HG?

Hi c c

It's very important that you know & have a record of the work done. The HG problem is well known (as you can see by the no. of posts here) The fact that it was repaired does not mean it won't happen again.
Your circumstances sound familiar. Are you already with us?

I wonder if matt who posted the information on the 21.7.05 regarding the SMMT could let me know if he had any success. I have sent my details and am waiting to hear from them
