I can't believe so many of us are still having problems.

The head gasket on my 2000 Freelander 1.8 blew on the August bank holiday. Luckily, I was able to stop the car quickly, and had it recovered to my local LR dealership. After inspection, it appears there is no further engine damage, and all that's required is a new head gasket, oil, etc.

However, the bill will still be close to £1000, and as the car had a major service at this dealership only 3 weeks before, I'm understandablya bit miffed.

The dealership duly submitted a post warranty claim to LR UK whose response was a definite NO to financial assistance. Regardless of the full dealership service history, the service 3 weeks before and the vehicles mileage of only 49000. Their reason is that I bought the car outside of its original 3 year warranty and they seem totally unwilling to budge.

When I questioned them regarding this and brought up the service history, I asked them "so you're saying that all the dealership servicing was a waste of money?" their response was a simple "yes".

As it stands, the car is still at the dealership while I decide what to do next. Is it worth pursuing this legally? Or is my best option to fix it at my local independant LR specialist, and quietly sell it on?

have read your post Kevin, I urge you to read through the whole forum, I know it may seem tedious but you will then understand you are in a better position than a lot of other people.I know you must feel very angry but I would get it fixed and get rid of it so many of us have been hoodwinked by Landrover and told lies, I for one had three engines eventually having to scrap it.Please join our action group, details on past posts.Sorry to sound negative but if you can keep your loss at a thousand pounds it is a whole lot better than most of us.Incidently I did not drive mine when the gasket went on the third engine but it still needed a new engine.Good luck.

Hi, just found this forum. Guess what, 2002 Freelander, 33000 miles and a blown head gasket. The car is fully serviced and treated gently. This is an outrage and Land Rover should not be allowed to get away with this. I appears that this is a known problem which was not made clear to me at the time of purchase so someone is accountable.

Guess I won't be buying another one of these cars.

P.S. does anyone have a sticky reverse gear and electric windows that give up working?

Hi Kevin,

As you now realise, many of us have suffered the same problems with this despicable vehicle. You definitely need to persue your claim via LR, but you mentioned "quietly seeling the vehicle on".
The resale value is a fraction of what you might imagine due to it's appaling record,(my '99 fetched £3500.00!!).
LR need to resolve the matter if they seriously see a future for the model. This will only be acheived by the collective strength of all the disgruntled owners.
I seriously recommend that you follow the support link and join us.

Regards,
Mark

hello,

I bought a used freelander XEI 2000 from gateway/stratstone landrover in newport 16th Sept 2004 and the vehicle was 3 years old. the very next day the driveshaft went, so after a week they replaced it, then 3 weeks later the car went back for a list of 10 problems. Then the cockey sales manager went through the list and said nowt wrong. February 2005 and the gearbox went wrong (one of the faults i had earlier complained about) I was then told that it was down to 'driver abuse' and i'd have to pay! How can it be driver abuse if i complained about it a few weeks after buying the car.

After a lot of aggravation, stress and letters to various departments of Pendragon, Landrover and the dealers themselves did they actually sort out a replacement.

March 2005 they gave me a Freelander 1.8ES 2002 model (after me forking out another £1500) couple of months later, this one goes back, needed new coupling for the crank shaft, new pads and disks. Sept 2005, 5 days after the manufacturers warranty expires the head gasket goes wrong, now told i may have to pay.

I have spoken to the dealers, landrover customer services, landrover finance, BBC X Ray, Citizens advice, solicitors etc and it seems the only option i have left is to pay £3000, then give the car back!?!?!? well sod that, next move for me is to get signs made, get all the newspapers i can find interested and then camp outside the dealership and annoy them by protesting and telling the truth to their potential customers....i shall let u know what happens....even still, look out on the news!

Message for Terry anyone wondering how the SMMT report went:
As suspected they were not at all interested, basically stating that LR had acted in a fair and responsible manner - (or words to that effect!!) and they could see no opportunity to take the case any further forward.
I'm sure everyone in the motor trade is bent whether its a back street garage or main dealer!!!

I am now trying to shift my LR, all the dealers basically don't want to know, in fact the common question I get asked is how many head gaskets has it been through??

Here are my figures of depreciation and loss!!
Bought 10 months ago for £7600 (2000 Xei)
After 7 months installed recon engine £2300 (inc fitting etc)
Now I can only get approximately £5K on a trade in!!

THAT'S A LOSS OF £4900 in under a year!!!
Check out autotrader.co.uk, people are basically giving them away, I wonder why!!!

Thanks. I am pretty p!!?d off. I bought the car from new and it is now depreciating like a stone. I have been quoted £600 for a repair and am persuing LR to cough up. Once I have it back it is up for sale. I have lost all confidence in it. I am trying a 'not fit for the purpose intended' under Sale of Goods act approach coupled with a 'how can they not acknowledge a problem and do anything about it' line.
I'll keep the forum posted.

Ron

Hi Ron,
Sorry to hear of yet another dissatisfied Freelander owner! I am in exactly the same boat as you and walked away from my 1.8S in Apr05 after 1/the rear diff going in Jan05 2/the gearbox going in Feb05 after a 'sticky' reverse gear since new 3/the head gasket going in Mar05. All this after 3.5 years and 38000 miles of virtually trouble free motoring since new!
Get angry, scream and shout, kick the cat etc but most of all make sure you dont pay out a penny to get it fixed (if you bought through a LR dealership and carried out all the correct servicing, recalls, warranties etc then you have a solid case) and then get rid smart and get on with your life.
Regards, Jackie

I bought 1.8 ES petrol 2002 (52) in may 2005 with 36000 Miles on and guess what the head gasket and cylinder head went on Tuesday 20th Sep. LR assist came out straight away told me that it was the Head Gasket, he also told me that it was a common fault, he said I should have got the TD4 is this true? I knew about this before I purchased my FL but was told it was the earlier model. So I will wait till my warranty is up and get rid. LR Bury have fixed it I got it back today 26th with no cost. Does anyone know of any further action that is being taken to compensate us?
