Noy wanting to add to your joy of coming onto this site but you are so far away from reality it is incredible . Go back to the start , this site is for people to use to get help and ADVICE , now part of that advice is that if you own a Kseries Freelander then you should check your levels weekly ( AS PER YOUR HANDBOOK ) The reasons why this advice is given is because we know full well the catastrophy if you fail to do this , as been said many times before it will be the difference between £800 or £4000 . No-one has ever inferred that these simple checks will stop your gasket from failing , it is advise to save any owner money .....quite simply . I cant understand why people on this site continue to interpret this advice incorrectly . May i politely ask you what section of the motor industry do you work in , because ive never spoken to anyone within the industry before who fails to recognise the benefits of level checking ? ___________________ http://landroveradvice.myfastforum.org The only believers are brainwashed !!
I posted back on here some time last year when my freelander 1.8 s 02 reg you guessed it had h/g failure, it cracked, lucky for me it was under waranty and the place where I bought it from done the job with a new h/g and timming belt etc,,,,,8 months down the line and hey ho,,,,water is needing to be topped up every week now but no sludge in engine and no warning on dash to indicate temp rising,,,, I really love this 4x4 but have to say am questioning reliability on long journeys. Iv'e made my mind up to sell and get a rav 4, but im worrying that if I sell private as obviously I will get more money than part ex, iI will be landing a pile of worry onto some other poor soul who will have the misfortune of having h/g failure again.....any advice please, thanks in advance and sorry in advance if any spelling and grammer are not up to scratch...lol.
HEAD GASKET FAILURE HEAD GASKET FAILURE HEAD GASKET FAILURE! Last march I was looking fro a new car, I was surprised how cheap Freelanders were and found a low milage 2001 model, I successfully negociated a good purchasing price before I even viewed the car. Prior to going to see the car I came across numerous pages relating to the Head Gasket failure the the K Series engine has when in a Freelander, this apparantly is due to the fact that the K Series Engine is designed to be for a 1400cc engine instead of 2000cc and the Freelander is a heavy car as well. Needless to say on hearing this, I rang the owners of the car and said I would no longer be coming. However the owner said that the car had head gasket problems in 2005 and the whole engine was replaced by a LAND ROVER DEALER. So armed with this information I rang Land Rover customer care and (0870 5000 500), I explained to a helpful female assistant that I was contemplating purchasing a Freelander which had a replacement engine, consequently I asked if in 2005 modifications had be made to ensure that there would be no further head gasket problems, she aked the registration of the car, the dealership who carried out the replacement engine and after a lengthy 7 minutes, she catagorically informed me that this car would have no further Head Gasket Problems. It was on the strength of this conversation that I decided to go ahead and purchase the car, as I felt that I was now walking in to a den of vipers knowing I would be unscathed! Two months later, my head gasket goes, no loss of fluid was evident prior to this and no dash lights came on to state that any thing was a miss prior to this. I immediatly ring Land Rover Customer care, and am told that they would never have stated this, and that all their conversations are recorded and taht they would be able to retrieve the conversation I had. They then say that they have no recording of the message. They also say that they will not pay for the repair despite the fact that since 2005 they have changed teh Oil Rail and the Gaskets, the landrover dealership who have now replaced the head gasket have informed me that since march 2006 when the new Rail and Gasket were first used , they have had no head gaskets coming back, however they still have pre 2006 freelanders coming in for new head gaskets or complete engine replacements. Now with my itemised phone bill, a statement from the previous owner stating that he was aware that my discussion with Land Rover was the sole reason that I decided to purchase, I ahve a good case to sue Land Rover. I also believe that the Freelander is a dangerous car and that if all owners report their head gasket failures to the VOSA ( [Log in to view email] ) then they should recall this doomed engine and force Land Rover to refit all the pree 2006 engines with the new gasket, oil rail and external thermostat. Now I am keen to sue land rover, and would like to hear from anyone else who wishes to do so or has already done so, best wishes, JBT

Even with the new rail and modified componets there is still no gaurantee that it will not fail again , by using these components you are eliminating certain failure points which make the engine more robust . The dealer maybe correct when they say they have had no comebacks , i have had the same results also but for now this mod mustnt be seen as the be all and end all of the problems with this engine . With regards to using Vosa , i believe you will be flogging a dead horse . ___________________ http://landroveradvice.myfastforum.org The only believers are brainwashed !!
Many owners get pretty hot under the collar about their Freelander engine failing coupled with the cost they incur and who can blame them really, but it soon fades as they either get their engine repaired or replaced and sell the car or, keep it for a bit. I'm not going to respond to anything anyone says along the lines of a few posts ago as that's not what I'm here for. Sufficient to say that as far as I'm concerned your advice has always been fair and reasonable on the subject and virtually mirrors anything I've ever said, same goes for Mike Robinson. Kindest Regards Des Hammill
Thanks for that. I think I can also speak for Dudkat72 when I say that we don't come on here to upset people but our intent is to try and lessen the financial burden people have when their vehicle goes wrong. Catch the problem early and it will be a lot cheaper than the engine expiring.
Yes owners do get hot under the collar but throwing insults around just because you dont agree with someones advice is totally unecessary . I may come over as a little abrupt occasionally on certain issues but in general i dont stoop to personal insults . I think now after several thousand posts that this thread should be archived , it no-longer gives advice about the problem but is just a place where people come to vent their spleen and perhaps join forces to try and sue Land Rover . As far as im concerned ive said enough on this topic , people dont seem to want to take any advice ( well not unless its legal ) anymore , they just want solutions to problems which im not qualified to answer . Hope you have a good evening . ___________________ http://landroveradvice.myfastforum.org The only believers are brainwashed !!
I can't say that I have ever found you abrupt and I have never seen you trade insults. I suspect a part of the problem is that people don't look back and see what has been said because it's all there actually; the tendency isn't to do this. I think your advice has been pretty good actually and I also think that you are quite well qualified to say what you do. I have had the technicalities of the IRD explained to me but I have never pulled one to pieces for example. You see such problems on a daily basis and make good comment as far as I'm concerned. I have really only ever 'looked' at the engine but I can see that you a good knowledge of the whole car. I do think that the issue is coming to an end in fact it's all over really and nothing is ever going to come of it legal-wise. My Rover K-Series engine keeps going and has been 100% reliable since repair BUT, I check the coolant level often AND if I had not been as vigillant as I am and had gone the recommended service interval the expansion tank would be empty. As the handbook says a weekly check is adviseable and whether it's acceptable these days or not to anyone who buys a car, that's the reality of the situation. You have been very good on this forum and have done nothing wrong. Kindest Regards Des Hammill
So once again, has any one instead of moaning actually formed a group and taken group legal action? JBT
Again thank you to every one that posts for there advice on our wounderfull cars lol Adverts Currently On Preloved - Place an ad here for free
thanks :) stephen ps the oil looks fine no sludge or anything..
Joining a group claim might also involve some financial outlay for solicitors, the more who join the less this will be.
I have also noticed that the car is heating up very quickly... it never overheats, but the temperature guage hits half way within less than a mile of setting off from cold in the morning... Is this the start of the cylinder head going on the new engine?
The first thing I done was to get intouch with LR warranty people and they explained to me that my warranty had ran out but as a goodwill gesture they would get LR garage to fix the problem free of charge. I was lucky that they offered to do this as I had to have a new engine fitted and the total cost came too £4100. I did'nt stop there as I contacted watchdog of the problems the FL has there reply was that they have already highlighted the problems with the FL and that they would not be bringing this issue up again for the time being. A few days later I then get a call from LR asking me if I was happy with the service I recieved and hoped that this was going to be the last I here from them and that I was'nt going to 'highlight the problem with anyone' and I wonder why. I am all for getting involved with bringing this company to book but being on this forum for so long and finding out how many LR owners have the same problem with the HG, over 65000 makes me think that nothing will ever be done and before people say im a defeatest im not im just a realist as problems have been going on for what I know over 9yrs. I can only say I wish everyone all the luck, but I am just going to use this skip on wheels until the HG goes again because i have been told by a member of LR staff it will, then scrap it. Ken
So Good Luck Ken
i dont think i would get any joy contacting landrover coz i have only had the freelander just over a month and its a y reg, milage is under 55000 tho. any ideas ?
When I went with the RAC guy to tow my FL i was confrunted with the manager of LR and he pointed out the problem before I explained to him an then had to listen to him going on about how foolish I was to hand over my Great BMW for what he called a heap of junk. They offered me a curtisy car a 'Hyundi' I asked him why hav'nt I been given a FL his reply 'not worth the hassel. Soz to go on chief but it just gest me so mad as few years down the line and still people paying good money are being robbed. I dont have any solutions to your problem except get a rundown on the cost to get it fixed and then way up the pros and cons, do you accept the costing with know guaranty of it lasting long or do you bite your lip and spend your hard earned cash on something that will last, I know what I would do and mine is an 04 plate. Let me know what you decide. Ken
