You need to have the engine checked thoroughly: a pressure test on the cooling system to prove you do not have an external leak, compression test on the cylinders, a test for carbon monoxide (CO) in the header tank. CO is only from exhaust gas and this is a reliable test. We do these tests before any strip down. A good place to start for leaks is by checking the inlet manifold seal on the head. The shaped silicon rubber seal leaks near No1 inlet port.

Thought i would share this all with you , im sure some will appreciate itI have a K series Freelander 03 plate , high mileage 123k , i check the levels weekly and before and after any long run , 2 months ago i noticed a very small coolant loss in my header tank , because my wife hardly uses it anymore ( prob less than 20 miles a week currently) i gave it a quick check over , couldnt find any external leaks so told the wife to check the levels also and if anything seemed different to switch it off straight away . She dropped the kids off at scouts one evening and just as she was pulling onto our drive she said that something didnt feel right , she switched it off straight away and ran in and got me , i checked the coolant level and it had dropped to a level of around 2 inches left in the bottle . Because obviously im aware of this problem i checked the dipstick and there was very slight signs of emulsification into the oil but at that stage no oil in the water , next day removed the head and found the hg had failed . Luckily i had caught the problem in time , there was no consequential damage to the head from warpage so i refitted the head using the new components etc etc and has been fine ever since . There is no doubt in my mind if i wasnt checking the levels weekly and made my wife aware of the problem i would be faced now with a bigger bill which leads me to my point of this ....... if you own one of these vehicles check your levels weekly , it will in most cases not stop the hg from failing but what it will do is drastically reduce your repair bill .

Log onto http://www.honestjohn.co.uk search for Freelander review, there is a alarm modification for the water header tank, so if your Freelander water level goes low, it will warn you via a buzzer or light to be located in the dash.Hope this helps

hi..my X reg Freelander 1.8 ES petrol bought brand new in Jan 2001. At 37k miles in Sep 2007 head gasket failure and supposed new engine fitted - have since heard that it may have been reconditioned! On 18 May 2009 I was told that head gasket had gone again and cost of repair is £750 inc VAT... all this after only 14k miles with the "new" engine. Has anyone successfully taken either Landrover themselves or one of the main dealers to court over the head gasket failure under 1982 Supply of Goods and Services Act ????cheers JC

Hi there,My wife's 1.8 xsi petrol 54 plate had the same problem @ 46k on the clock in April this year. Took it to Guy Salmon, Knutsford and following diagnostics, confirmed CHG had gone. As I have had the vehicle for 4 years and serviced @ Guy Salmon for the last 3 years - last one was 30/1/09 of which included a free winter check, fluids, oils etc (no sign of any issue - apparently)!!! I called the Land Rover Customer Care line and spoke to a nice bloke called Steve. Informed him of my disappointment and he said he would talk to the garage to establish the true issue. Cut to the chase, the damage and cost was in excess of £1000.00, however, following a call back from Steve, he then informed me that Land Rover would pay for all the cost - 100% and apologies for the issue - result for me. If you are going to push on with this - of which I would say you do, have all the information with you - service etc and I believe there is a report on the internet somewhere from Land Rover saying about the K series engine being over bored resulting in a tighter tolerance between the oil, water and piston housings leading to a build up of pressure resulting in the CHG failure. Hope this helps and good luck.

Townsd. There is no luck at all really , it just so happened in this instance that your vehicle met the criteria for a post warranty contribution which in this case happened to be 100% . I would very much doubt that anyone with a car older than yours would get any good will contribution at all .

Just be happy you managed to sell/trade in your Freelander. My Freelander V6, 8 yrs old, with new engine (HGasket problems like all the rest), 7,000 euros spent on repairs, NO ONE is interested in looking at it, let alone buying it!! Don't even think Landrover Dealer in Spain wants anything to do with it..and they are the ones who sold it to me...so what does that tell you??? Good luck with your Suzuki...and for the rest, stay away from Landrover/Freelander. Biggest mistake I ever made!!

Happy that you sold your Freelander. I no longer own one, thank God. Definately the most unreliable car I have ever owned. Also the running cost were really really terrible, there was always something going wrong with it, suffered two, yes two headgasket failures. In the years that I owned the Freelander 1.8 Petrol, it cost me £1,000's in repair bills. I lost more money on this car, than all the cars that I have ever owned put together. Only buy a Freelander/Land Rover from new - keep up the warrantee, but expect to loose £1,000's and £1,000's on it. If you do buy a secondhand Freelander, make sure you have a cast iron warrantee, because you will definately need it! The Freelander looks good, drives well, but is very, very, very unreliable and costly to run, steer clear of this one!

Does anyone have some advice on what i should do. I bought a 1.8 1999 freelander a week ago. I have 3 mths warranty and have just taken it back as i noticed it was losing water too quick. The garage have told me they will ring when they know what the problem is. After finding this web site i am sure they will ring and say its the head gasket.I did ask what would happen if its the head gone and they said they would skim it.After reading everything on this site i dont want it. Do i have any rights to my money back or a differant car.
