The only sad thing is that they (LR) are fine Jack!! We are the ones who have had to fork out major money for engine replacements...and I stress again, all LR did for me was refund my water bottle after I had to fork out over E8,000 for a new engine....oh, and to make it worse, when I kept on having to stop everywhere to put in water as the level kept diminishing, my LR dealer told me it was because I didnt put in antifreeze...that would have helped!!!???? Helllooooo, what crap is that? so, at the end of the day, I made the mistake of buying of freelander...never ever again...the sad thing is noone wants to buy it, not even for next to nothing...so I will drive it till it dies and hope it rots in hell!

Let me say that Land Rover are very innovative when it come to their R&D which is second to none In fact other manufactures nick their ideas & when BMW left they kept some of the research & ideas which they have since introduced in their 4x4's the downhill thingy is 1 example. - however both their long term testing & manufacturing let them down - in 2004 I purchased a new Premium model top of the range Discovery & within the 1st 2 years & apart from other individual major faults it went into the garage 6 times for the same fault all of which at the end could be attributed to poor build quality. The other faults involved g/box & engine failure which I discovered later the manufacture was well aware of having supplied the dealers with mods in anticipation of failure

I like to think I was a valuable customer having bought 3 Discos over the years & whilst I'm prepared to accept some niggles even in a new car ( they are complicated after all) it was this attitude by Land Rover & not the dealer which has led me to vow never to buy another LR of any model

On a happier note I'm taking delivery of a new V70 R design estate next week - To LR I say this it could so easily have been another Disco had you recalled my last one & fitted the various mods instead leaving stranded 3 times for approx 2 hours on each occasion whilst waiting for a recovery vehicle

Almost forgot I'm a disabled driver so unable to leave the vehicle without assistance So if stuck I can't even visit the bathroom

Hello Dudkat, rmember me from a few years back?....

I just thought id come back in and see how thing are going , and to see if there was any definitive solutions yet, but i think from what ive seen, the answer is no, and everyone is still going round in circles...

How did the mls gasket hold up?...Are they still working, or do they only last a certain time..

Ive since moved on a few cars since the freebie, and have has a citroen xsara Hdi, then a jeep grand cherokee(ouch) and now a picasso.
All a million times better reliability than the freebie, but theres still something i miss about the old LR....It felt like quality, even if it wasnt.
I'd have another tho, but only if the probs were fixed or it was a tdi

Hows things with you?

What a load of rubbish!!

Yes other cars do suffer from engine failure.

But the percentage of engine failures on other makes and models of car is very low compared with say the Freelander 1.8

Landrover new they had a problem with the 1.8 k series engine from the being, and did very little in sorting the problem out. I would say that anyone owning a Freelander with the 1.8 K series engine will suffer a head gasket failure at some time.

I have been driving since 1972, my wife has been driving since 1974, we change our cars every 4 years. Out of all the cars we have owned, only one has suffered head gasket failure. Not once, but twice!

Guess which car that was, yes the Freelander with the 1.8 K series engine.

If you want to buy a car that could litterally cost you £1,000's in repair bill in a very short time, buy the Freelander.

My wife would love to have a Freelander again. But as I have told her ''over my dead body''.

These are my reasons for not buying the Freelander

1. Totally unreliable.
2. Head gasket guaranteed to blow at some time
3. Very expensive to get repaired
4. You will loose £1,000 when you come to sell it.

My advice to anyone even thinking of buying the Freelander, is to telephone any local main dealer, and say to them that you own a Freelander and you want to trade it in. You will be truely amazed at the trade in value. You will get Peanuts!!!

I think the only way to get some money back on a notsofreelander is to store it until it is ten years old the part exchange it as scrappage,at least you should get a couple of thousand pound for it.

Sat in a Mercedes garage at the weekend and was asked by 12 year old saleman: 'So, has your Freelander had the legendary Head Gasket fault?'

Great to know that the joke is on the customer and that Land Rover's attempt to disown the problem will only lead to buyers disowning Land Rovers. Will never buy LR again. Ever.

Has anyone had any joy with LR admitting that it was a design fault?

Hi there

I was offered £2,500...A shock as I bought it new like a complete fool (second Freelander - never again) but now wondering if that is all I can expect. Let me know your thoughts when you have a moment.

What are your thoughts on the Td4 version ?

Yep, it is the 1.8 petrol nightmare. I've no experience of Td4 - what is the consensus? Now thinking of buying a Honda which is tragic but I've lost faith in LR

I'd keep trying with other dealers, you may get more elsewhere, but the 4x4 is not so popular now. Good luck.

Give it a try, either the 1.8 petrol or the TD4 Freelander, ring any main dealer and see what they offer.

They will usually ask you to bring the car in, but if you insist that it is not possible, they will eventually give you a price.

They will give you peanuts for them!!

£2500 not too bad a price for a 2002 year. Maybe you could squeeze another £500 out of the dealer?

Cheers, I'm going to see what I can do and I'll keep track of all the woes on the board - still shocked that the engine is such a clear problem but that LR won't take responsibility. But I hear that their future as a company is bleak...

I agree £2500 is pretty good, well worth thinking about, you'll only get continuing grief with the Freelander!
