My wifes 02 freelander suffered a head gasket failure yesterday. 50,000 miles and 12 weeks out of warrantee. Stratstone of Middleton-On-The-Wolds say its a recon engine at £3500. They say that they will approach LR for help with the costs......... I await their reply! I'm new to this forum, wished I'd seen it earlier, has anyone approached the 'Top'Gear' TV program? Seems something that Clarkson would like to 'discuss' on air.

I think contacting 'Top Gear' and channel fives fifth gear would be a very good idea. Make people aware that this is an ongoing problem with freelanders and to stay clear.

Hi all

I am new to this forum as my 2001 Freelander died today...
The AA man told me straightaway that it was my head gasket as there was water mixing with the oil in the engine and towed me to a (non-Landrover) garage.
I am getting increasingly worried reading this forum that I may need a new engine... which will of course be expensive. The garage hasn't as yet got back to me with a diagnosis or estimate of what work will need to be done.
I have 2 questions which I would be grateful if anyone could help me with:
1. My car was previously serviced at Landrover ( & is out of warranty now as its a 51 car). It is currently due a service, although not booked in yet - but it hasn't yet done 30 000 miles... Would I have any claim against Landrover to get them to foot the bill??
2. Should I get it towed to my Landrover dealer (Stratstone in Bham) to get this fixed or should I get it fixed at my independent garage?

Also I would be grateful if anyone does have the watchdog piece, as I am ploughing my way through all the posts on the forum but haven't come across it yet.

Here's hoping that some of you will be able to give me some advice...

cheers

Sarah

Land Rover will fight you all the way. The key thing though is to have a full LR service history. Get a quote from an official LR dealer to get it fixed also. It will probably be approx twice the cost of an independent. It really depends as to how desperate you are to have the car on the road as it can be a long drawn out process to get LR to cough up. Independent is OK providing they use official LR parts but makes the job of getting anything out of LR much harder!

Welcome to the wondeful world of LR ownership! I hope you are enjoying the experience as much as we all have!

Hi Sarah,

Welcome to the wonderful world of Land Rover ownership!!!! My freelander died about a month ago, Land Rover were less than helpful and being a lot more expensive than my local garage, I opted for the cheeper option. I managed to trade the car in for a peugeot, a lot more reliable, and hand the freelander over once fixed. My advice is to get it fixed and then get rid quickly. You will be out of pocket like all of us by quite a sum of money, but at least it relieves further worries.

Hi cc & Rob & Ron
Thanks for this - did you go through a LRover dealer to get it repaired?? I am just worried that if I do that they will charge the earth & take a month (or more) and then still refuse to pay the costs
I am also concerned that they will just say its service was due so won't cover it (it was last serviced about 14m ago) but had lots of work done over this summer for disappearing coolant (sounds familiar?) which wasn't dignosed as a head gasket problem - evn though paid >£200 for the engine to be stripped and inlet manifold gasket replaced...

Hi Sarah. I am a Landy mechanic. If you have not abused the engine such as run it out of oil or water then it aint your fault. Get the work done at a franchised Land Rover dealer as this is where the best quality should come from. Get Land Rover to pay 100% of the costs (Parts & Labour). You are fully within your rights to do this, dont settle for anything less. It will be a fight but the car should not behave in this way, it is not acceptable. Make sure you get rid of the car as soon as possible after the repair as it is not uncommon for the head gasket to fail again in only a few weeks of the repair. Hope this helps.

Hi lol. I work with these vehicles. If you look at the gasket very closely you will notice a area of the orange sealant will have come away which will have caused the oil/water mix. Check the liners have not dropped below the block face, if they have then you will have to fit a new engine. They are allowed to rotate but it is bad practice to do so. Take a look at the head face......after a good clean up you will see porosity/pitting holes mainly around where the fire rings would have sat. Whether you see these marks or not, you MUST NOT Re-use the original head...not even after skimming. Trust me, it is a recipe for certain disaster!! Make sure you replace the cambelt...these break after disturbed. You need to carry out a bulletin if you car has not already got it done.....Take a look in the engine bay......look down to the N/S bottom of the radiator.....you should see a creamy white thermostat housing linked to 3 coolant hoses. If you don't see this then you need the thermostat modification. Go to a Land Rover dealer....ask for a copy of the thermostat modification bulletin in relation to the 1.8 petrol Freelanders. In this bulletin there will be 4 parts you will need.....the cooling hose containing thermostat, a thermostat blanking plug and 2 O Rings which are the same size. Once you have these parts, remove the original thermostat from its original location directly behind the water pump in the water rail at the back of the engine. Fit the blanking plug, then the new O Rings, grease the O rings and re-assemble. Next, take the modified hose, place down the front of the engine and fit to all coolant connections with the white thermostat housing on the N/S at the bottom of the radiator. Once you have the hose in this position it will be easy to see where each bit of hose secures to. You will need to swap the camshafts over from the old head. Before you remove the camshafts and their hydraulic buckets, have the new head ready to put them straight back into. If you leave the buckets out of the head to long without the camshaft tightened down on them, they will air lock and the engine will not start or at best run like a bag of *!#%!@!! You will then have to remove them again and manually bleed each of them out! Even when this is done correctly, the engine will still tap loudly on first start up. This tapping should go away after a hard 20 minute road test. Fit 4 new camshaft oil seals (Black at the front, Red at the Rear, make sure these are fitted in this order or they leak!!) You will need to use a special sealant to seal between the head and camshaft carrier. It is a yellow stuff that smells like bannanas! It never really dries, more just goes tacky. Don't over use it or it will block the oil ways, I suggest that you use a small plastic roller like a small version of a paint roller and apply the sealant as sparingly as you can do. Your dealer will know which sealant I'm talking about. Make sure you fit a new inlet manifold gasket, locking studs and lock nuts, new exhaust manifold gasket and new cam cover gasket. There are 2 bleed nipples for the cooling system...one is located on the coolant rail below the throttle body. The other is on the top heater hose. Bleed the lowest one first, then the top, warm the engine with the header cap removed until no air is coming from the bleed hose at the top of the tank. Be careful not to let the coolant boil when the cap is off, you will end up with another gasket!! Use the car heater to keep the engine from getting to hot. If you need any more info just ask. Hope this helps.

Hi Scott,
a mate of mine has just had his head gasket replaced due to it failing, he also had a new head fitted, the engine appears to run fine and he has as yet not reported any problems but is it normal for the lower radiator hose to stay cold all of the time, the temp gauge is normal and the heater works fine, this engine has not had the modification done to the thermostat.

Hi Sarah

I must agree with the advice to get rid of it as soon as it is fixed. It is a 'smokin gun' in terms of reliability. I part exed mine 3 days after getting it back for a nice Mitsubishi Shogun 2.5 Diesel! The daft thing was I had this car from new for three 1/2 years and did not have an once of trouble! Why oh why did they ruin a very nice car by fitting this engine?
I had mine fixed at an independent for the princely sum of £825. Several letters to LR to get them to cough up. Don't be suprised if they try to fob you off. If you use an official LR dealer they will try for reimbursement on your behalf but make sure that you get confirmation of LR reimbursement as if you check back on this site, peolple are still having to contribute towards costs even from an official LR dealer. Be strong and stand by your guns. LR agreed my payment but still no cheque yet after 4 weeks!

Hi Sarah,

My freelander was serviced just 3 weeks prior to the head gasket failure. So much for servicing! I was quoted £3500 to replace the engine plus labour costs. My local garage have quoted me £2000 and are a lot more helpful. I opted for my local garage to repair the problem and have been fortunate enough to have traded it for a peugeot 307 HDI once fixed. If your lucky enough to persuade LR to pay your costs then by all means go to your LR dealer for repair, this could however take a while and no car if your paying finance is also costly. If you are wisely planning to get rid of it as soon as its fixed I would personally opt for the cheapest option available and your local qualified mechanics are just as capable of repairing your freelander as LR mechanics themselves. Infact I would go as far as to say they are more than qualified than LR mechanics because they deal with all models of cars, not just land rovers. As long as they use LR parts you will be ok.

I have written to the Managing Director of Land Rover at their headquarters in Gaydon, Warwickshire. This was two weeks ago and still have no reply. Basically the letter was worded that if my freelander repair costs, if not all a good majority were not agreed by themselves then legal action would be taken. I will be very suprised if I receive a letter by return, but I will be persistent and annoying until a definate answer is given. It seems to be a long drawn out process to get any answers from them, if any at all. If you are prepared for a lengthy negotiations go to LR and I wish you luck, I personally couldnt be bothered going round in circles with a useless car sat on the drive. Like me, I'd advise you get it fixed as cheaply as possible, get rid, then annoy them with persistent letter writting until you get some answers.

Rob

I followed the method you prescribed and sent them a total of two letters before they agreed to cough up. I had to send them: -
a - photocopies of my service history which I photocopied before selling the car on.
b - The invoice for my repair.
c - Contact details for the independent so they could confirm that genuine LR parts were used.
It took a week for my first 'brush-off' response from LR. The second response took about three weeks and I presume I had rattled a few cages so it had to move through the system.
My response to their first letter answered their points paragraph by paragraph and pointed out to them the legalities (which they obviously already know) of having my car repaired by an independent. I also mentioned 'Watchdog' and the numbers of their own modification documents. Their response also pointed me to the motor manufacturers association for legal advice which in my third letter I pointed out that my legal route would not involve that organisation.
You seem to have to counter their facts with true facts and I still never got an answer to some poinient questions such as could they guarantee my car would not fail with the same fault once repaired!
