Hi, I am a another sad factor the head gasket on my freelander blew and I have had to have a tow home;
Took car to My LR dealer and the service manager has agreed it is a very well known fault(off the record of course; in his own words they pay his morgage) But thats where the nice guy conversation stopped; He told me that I would have to pay for them to take out the engine to have a look at it180.00+ labour I know im female but does the equipment cost £180.00????
they would then get on to lr on my behalf (showing goodwill) he says
but then tells me that they can not give me a courtesy car nor even a hire car (their own fleet is fully booked; me thinks must b a lot of sick freelanders here) I told him I live in a rural location with a disabled foster child, still no go so after a very xpensive taxi ride home we r now stuck; have thought about hire car with another company could I charge them 4 this??????? anyone

Keep the receipts for the car hire just in case but I very much doubt you'll get anything back.

£180 to take an engine out is cheap.
It wont stop at 180 though, they will find the problem and then it will be expensive.
Annoying though when its a known problem and LR aren't interested.
get it fixed and sell it.

Hi Cal,

I too asked for a courtesy car, transport for my job is important but they werent interested. I know for a fact you wont get any money back from LR for a hire car. It will be a world first if you do. Welcome to the unhelpful world of Land Rover dealers.

Bought freelander as needed a good reliable 4x4 joke or what??? I can not afford 2 pay 4 new engine so really in bad position...

my wife broke down yesterday in our 2001 Freelander, it died on her along a country lane, the AA came out and said he thought it was the Head Gasket. Took it to our local garage and he has said that the engine is completely ceased.A new engine is needed and has quoted £3000+. Can anyone advise where I could go and get a scond hand one and when I sell it do I have to make the buye aware?

I recently joined the headgasket failure club, but I was told I was lucky!!!!
Monday 14th November, I will remember this day.. I was topping up the washer bottle, when I noticed there was, some thing nasty in the header tank......sound familiar??? Yes in deed it was oil in the water. I drove the vehicle to an independant L/R repairer to confirm that the headgasket had gone, but needed stripping down to find out how much damage was done.... at the end of the week, I was told, we were lucky.... it was only the headgasket.... 32,000 miles thats all the car had done. Alot of time was spent cleaning the mayo mixture out of all the places it shouldn't have got ..like the heater, the rad etc... cost £1,325.
I was told by L/R customer services that the vehicle should be repaired by there own mechanices, if I want a 'goodwill payment' I was also told that L/R recognises the vehicle has this problem, as long as it has a full L/R service history. Which my vehicle has, and it under 4 years old. They would help!!! But there lies a small problem, some weeks after it had had an early 36,000 mile service, my husband notice the oil filter looked very old, after checking the invoice for the part number, it was clear the LR Dealer hadnot ever changed the filter???? B........Ds.

So there was no way I would trust them to lay a spanner or a finger on my vehicle again... Does any body know if I Can still claim for the repairs that the independant LR repairer did????

My other problem is that, the part exchange for this vehicle is very low £6,000 if I am lucky, I payed £14,000, just over 2 years ago. It is a bitter pill to swollen. Do I risk using it for a couple more years?? or do I sell it on....? I am very confused???

When I bought the vehicle, we were aware of the headgasket problem, after alot of research, were reassured L/R had solved the problem and the head gasket would not go on this model year!!!!!

Can any body give some advice????

Hi Mandi

I'm in the same position as yourself - my Freelander is being repaired by an independent. I contacted LR customer services on 08705 000500 - they initially said I had to get it towed to a LR dealership and they would have a look and consider whether they would contribute to the costs - but it would take longer as they would have to authorise the repair. When I replied that it was my prerogative where I got it repaired and that the independent would use LR parts - they said then I could submit a retrospective claim with copies of all the invoices and they would consider covering the costs of the parts but not the labour.
She refused to commit to an exact settlement over the phone and sold me some story about as the engines were rover engines and rover had folded, LR couldn't guarantee the engines (???)
Anyway I think that if in the worst case scenario I should expect to fork out the costs myself, then it would certainly be cheaper at an indep rather than a LR dealership. I will let you all know the outcome.
Sarah

Hi rdee. You must get the thermostat modification as it increases the amount of coolant in the engines warm up circuit. These engines are strange in that they heat up to operating temperature very quickly and yet the thermostat takes a reasonably long time to open. A good way I use is to hold the engine in 4th gear at 70mph for 10 minutes and then let it idle for a further 10 minutes. Observe the fan operation. The thermostat should be open by now, if not then there is a problem such as it may be stuck closed. Whatever happens I am sure you are aware that it is not a good idea to keep the car as the gasket will fail again. Thanks for your question.

Mandy/Sarah

Suggest if you have time you read the whole forum and do not pay a penny to have your Freelander's repaired (if you can afford to be without them for a while!).
Please contact Jon/Cris as requested as Landrover are definitely worried about this forum so certain discussions are only had in private.
Hope this helps

Hi Mandi

Yes you can but it is more difficult. Your independent must prove that they have used genuine LR parts. This in itself is a dilemma as there is a 'racing' gasket available that appently reduces the risk of future head gasket problems. Talking to my neighbours son who was a mechanic for Rover (same engine in many of their cars) they were always changing K series head gaskets. When you get the car back, you need to do that handbook stuff of checking and topping up the expansion bottle every week! I like most people here, suffered the loss and changed cars!

hi scott, Ive got a 2002 freelander and head gasket went in June 2005. Ive done about 5000 miles on the new gasket I had it repaired at an independant garage who specialise in Land Rovers. I love the car apart from the crap petrol engine. Im thinkin of buying a TD4. Can you tell me from your experience how likely is it that the gasket will go again. Any advice you can give would be appreciated. The car is running fine but i feel like its a ticking time bomb.

Cheers

Terry

To anyone who can afford to suffer the loss get rid of your freelander as quickly as possible after the head gasket has gone. It will go again and you'll end up throwing good money after bad. Steer clear of Landrovers in the future and tell everyone who will listen to do likewise. Landrover PR is disgusting. I had my Landrover for 4 years and chopped it in for a different car after getting nowhere fast talking to them. They are aware of the problem and the reality of the situation is it seems like a nice little money earner for them! Replacement engines are not cheap and LR feel they have people over a barrell in this matter, the only real effect they will feel will be in their pockets when Landrover sales drop as more and more people realise that LR are not interested in looking after its customers after the sale.

My cylinerhead gaskit has blown after 30,000 miles.
Can anyone help me as to good argumentationto give to Landrover so that I can get teh work done free of charge. They say ir needs a new engine and are offering 75% parts and labour, but this should be free as this seems to be a common well-known fault.

Bill
