hi guys,i've just bought the last of the bis 's in the island,25000 miler in stock condition, go faster mods so far.................bumpers removed, rear wiper motor removed, crankcase breather re routed down an out, aircleaner box removed, fine mesh fitted over carb, and this morning im going to link the carb linkage with a small bolt to have both chokes open together, also oil change and filter clean up, going to put semi synthetic in.
as for a catch tank? good idea but we have only vapours coming out of our crankase's so have not done that,im a biker so i know about oil on the roads but in this case my conscience is clear!!
i love the standard wheels......im going to see how big a tyre i can squeeze on this week

Hi Dave,
Well done saving the last 126 from the scrap man. I note you do not mention the main jets in your go faster mods. The idea of removing the air filter is to let more air into the carb. To keep the air/fuel ratio near right, in the old 500 days we used to go up a size on the main jet as well. The standard Bis main jet is 0.9mm on both venturis (18 & 19mm) so I would think of going to 0.95 on both mains. You could, of course, have the venturis modded too if you know someone with a lathe. I would open out both venturis to at least 20mm diameter and to 21mm if the right foot spent all its time flat on the floor. Main jets can be opened out by hand using a 1.00mm drill (for 20-21mm venturis) and a small tap wrench. I always collect as many old mainjets as I can before modding any as you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket. Another mod we used to do on the 500 carbs, was to replace the butterfly screws with solder and smooth off the shaft/butterfly join.
I love the standard wheels too and would like to get hold of some 127 ones as these are wider and will take 155 tyres easy. Panda wheels fit but do not look as nice.

Hi all,
I have just scrapped my 1993 Seat Marbella (read Fiat Panda :P ) It had the 903cc FIRE Engine. Now I have saved both the engine/gearbox and some other parts (Carb was rebuilt at cost of £75 inc. new stop solenoid £50 dealer only part :s)

My first question is can the gearbox be mated to the 126 BIS engine and what's needed to do this? I quite fancy the idea of 5 gears.

Secondly, though the engine is possible to fit I have been told into the 126 I'm not really interested in doing this conversion so is there anyone who would be interested in buying the engine gearbox etc. I have the ECU and all ancilliaries and have removed the wiring loom (however there's someone who may want the wiring loom but if someone wants it all then they can take it if they buy the engine.)

Finally does anyone know if the carb from this will fit my 126 and if it will be worth fitting? I just haven't had a chance to try it yet as the engine is at my friend's garage.

Feel free to email me or ring (07910 788408)

Many thanks in advance,
Leon.

Talking of performance ... has anyone any idea how to improve the 126's braking ? I half-considered adding a servo but someone said the 126's inlet manifold doesn't generate enough vacuum . Any tips / suggestions ?

If its aircooled, then front discs. Ruuds Garage in Holland does really good kits fairly cheap and pretty much a straight swap. Don't know if the BIS has the same king pin assembly as the A/C though???

The website is

There's no online shop, but he speaks good english so you can email or call.

He's got a really good reputation and does a lot of tuning work on 500s.

I think rear discs would be complete overkill. Ruud's brakes are top quality and cost me €300 last year which includes the whole kingpin/bearing assembly, which when you work it out is a bargain.

Thanks for info . I was actually hoping for a more economical modification . ( For economical , read "next-to-no expenditure " ) .
I'm sure converting the fronts to twin-leading shoe instead of single-leading shoe would make a significant improvement . Does anyone know if the master cylinder bore was consistent throughout the production run , or were different bores used ? Or will a different-bore master cyl from another vehicle fit ? One trick which occured to me is .... if the brake pedal is 6 inches long , extending it to 7 inches would increase the leverage by about 15 percent ... Any more suggestions please ?
Terry ( howdya like my yellow paper model 126 in the picture ? )

Hi Terry,
Is the card 126 the one from the web or your own deasign ? Does anyone remember the promotional card 126 ? I still have a couple of those unmade and will have to see if they will scan for 'our' 126 site.
Regarding cheap brakes for the 126 Personal/FSM/Bis, it seems as though everyone is waiting for someone else to 'get down and dirty'. It all depends on whether or not the larger diameter stub axles of these later 126s are the same dimensions as the 600/850. I am pretty sure that the larger brakes/stub axle journals of the 500Giardiniera/van were the same as the 600 (extra braking for extra load), so it would be reasonable for the 126 brakes to also be the same as the 600 or 850. If so, you have the choice of scrapyard discs from the 850 Special/Coupe/Spider or the 850/900 van/camper. So, who's going to be first to try it to see if it works ?

Hi Terry,
For what it is worth, the brake drum diameter for the 126P, Bis, 600D and 850 are all the same at 185mm (nom.) as opposed to the 500/126 (early) drum diameter of 170mm (nom).

Thanks for the drum diameters - this may be a good starting point for a conversion . Freggzample , early minis had twin leading shoe front brakes . If they are a compatible diameter maybe it would be possible to weld a 126 back plate centre into a mini back plate . We'd need to take into account the bore diameter of the wheel cyls as this would affect the travel of the brake pedal .
The 126 model is "all me own werk". Apart from the radio-controlled microcars which I make ( http://www.TerrysModelCars.co.uk )
I have been developing a CD of paper models of microcars and small cars . This CD now has over 100 variations of models and includes 126's in coloured and uncoloured versions . The yellow one in the picture is modelled on the " Flying Banana" , which is currently sat in my driveway .
From the CD the graphics can be printed to cut , fold and paste . If you make a mistake , don't worry , just print another and start again . The graphics are produced in Windows "Paint" and are sized to print onto A4 or Letter (USA) paper . You can colour the uncoloured 126 on screen to match your own car . Or print out uncoloured and "paint" with crayons . So simple even grown-ups can make 'em !

hi all, i havent posted much, and not for quite a while, so i hope im doing the right thing here, i have an austrlian delivery fiat 126p, which here is known as the FSM niki650. anyway, i want to modify it a bit. at the moment i have a racing exhaust and a pod style air filter, but i want to get a racing cylinderhead off a panda 30, which has been ported, flowed and polished and modified to fit my block, as well as a custom flowed manifold and abarth carburettor. i am also wanting to buy a camshaft with 7.2 lift with 292 duration. i am told that these are bolt on accesories. after this i will try and get my hands on bigger pistons, titanium conrods and sleeves to match. this will be down the track some time, but for now i would like to get the cylinderhead, carbie and camshaft with manifold. if there is anyone that could help me out in regards to how good an idea it will be etc. i have worked out that it should cost me AUD$1500 which is like 600 pounds delivered. i am prepared to pay the money, but i would like some feedback about the idea. also if someone has carbies plus manifold that would work, i would also like to know, as i might consider buying them for the engine, but it has to have a manifold as well as carbies, single or twin, it doesnt bother me.

cheers, Chris

Hi

The Panda Head mod is a great way to boost BHPs from the Niki engine, and is quite straight forward. The top man for panda 30 heads is pasquale in italy. he speaks pretty good english, sends a photo of everything you are going to pay for, all the heads are cleaned up and all the other bits you want from him are loads cheaper than from many other 500 specialists. he also provides all the extra little items you need like shorter studs and pushrod tubes, etc - just be sure you are ordering it all and not a bare head or you'll be stuck.

You can find him on ebay as turbo1sport and get his email address there.

heaven knows how much shipping and tax will be to Australia!

g'day,
thanks for that info. the place i am going to get it from comes pre-done so all you have to do is bolt it on, all the tubes and studs are already made, so i wont have a problem with that, but ill have a look at this italian bloke. i was wondering what sort of a BHP gain i could expect, i know with the camshaft it is rated at 20-25% power increase, which should see the engine develop 31hp. do you know what the cylinder head will push it up to?

cheers, Chris

I think the standard 650 126 engine is good for about 24BHP. The Panda 30 engine, which is very similar to a late Polish (FSM) 126 engine aside from the twin ported head and Weber 30 carb, is rated at 30bhp, so most of the gain can be attributed to the head and carb. The later Polish 126 engines already have improved compression and cam, so the increase in BHP from a tuned cam wouldn't be as great an *increase* as tuning an Italian built 126 engine, though the final BHP would be higher because of the better compression (up to 8:1 from 7.5:1). An improved exhaust would take things a little higher still and the reduced back pressure would also do a lot to keep the head cooler. A lot of the sports exhausts are junk though. Other worthwhile improvements would be the carb, electronic ignition and an electric fuel pump - increasing the flow though the carb (making more use of the return) will keep the temp down for a better burn. An alloy sump will also help cooling and stiffen the crankcase.

I'm not a great fan of drawing air in to the carb from the engine compartment as its too warm, but the existing air filter can be a bottleneck despite air being forced through by the fan so some kind of third party filter that can take its air from the fan or via the grills would be a good move.

The blitz racing site has almost everything you need to know about tuning 126 aircoolers:
