hi, i also have a intermitant start problem with my 02 reg fiat punto. The garages say it can't be sensor as the engine management light would appear on dash(no warning lights stay on dash).Can you tell me if you had a warning light to indicate the sensor could be at fault?

My fault is nothing to do with starting.
It is a flashing light relating to my automatic gearbox.

hi there i seem to be having problems with my fiat punto 1.2 1998.. i have had the car for nearly 6 months and only driven it for 3 months, it had a new battery just after i bought it and then the problems started.
First the head gasket went (which is ob a common fault in fiats) and i had this fixed along with a new cambelt.
Now my car shakes about and kangaroos down the road in any gear, but is intermittant. It sometimes does it alot and others not at all.. any info on what this could be.. have been told it could be the oxygen sensor, the fuel injection system, the ecu or the ignition plugs.. but have no idea.. there are no starting problems with the car its only when i get going the fun begins
Please help i dont want to spend out to much more on this car.

hi,anyone with same problem. 2001 8valve spi punto. about 6weeks ago on initial start ,would start on four pots, then misfire like a bad plug ,then come back on four. has now progressed to total misfire with ems light on after 5 seconds. have faffed around and found that misfire is on 1 and 4.have changed coil packs around ,makes no difference.its intermittent as it sometimes runs ok for days then drops off again. have jiggled all the wires around to see if a bad contact but no luck. anybody any ideas? ta

Hi. I'm afraid it sounds like your ECU.
Obviously check all the connections and earths first.

thanks terriers, could damp be getting into the looms from ecu to coil packs?.reason i ask is cos in a moment of frustration i put down the hammer and decided to apply a liberal dose of WD, put the aircleaner back on, started her up running like a bag of nails, so revved the a!!! of her for 10 secs, then bu!!!! me but she went back on four pots. have done usual lead checks and conclude that although 1 and 4 are not working, they are still getting sparks. yours konfused.

Hi. If the fault is intermittent then it could be that you checked for a spark when there was no fault apparent.
The fact that it is no.s 1 and 4 does point to the coil or Ecu.
Get the Ecu checked, Look through the posts for Quoman, I think the web address is Ecuclinic.com.

Bought 10 year old fiat punto 1200cc 1 week ago. Noticed oil light came on when oil had warmed, went off with increased revs, came back on again at idle. Changed oil and oil filter. Situation now slightly worse. Oil level checked all ok. Problem now Oil light comes on now before engine warms up and needs even higher revs to go off than previously. I noticed light flickers momentarily before coming on. Haven't checked anything yet. Any tips will be helpful, including checking oil flow.

HI. FIRST THING TO DO IS REPLACE THE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. IT IS PROBABLY FAULTY.

thank you for the advice I thought it might be the oil pick up in the sump (clogged). However you are right first check the easiest part, the switch. Tried looking for it today - found a sender in the cylinder head, I think it must be for temp. Where will I find the oil switch please. thank you

Hi. Should be near the oil filter, it could be the oil pickup but normally when it is that the symptoms are reversed, ie oil light comes ON at higher revs. It could be the pressure relief valve not seating, but a switch is only around £6.00 so it's the best place to start, followed by an engine flush.

Thanks for help. Have changed oil switch, easier than I thought, and flushed. Not really any difference I can detect. Light still going out at higher revs. Will book it in for sump business. If that doesn't work what else can it be. Oil pump? Is it an expensive item.?

Hi. Sump is quite straightforward, oil pump is probably around 3 hours, there is always the chance of a short os dash fault. Have you had the pressure checked ?

I have a 2002 Punto Active. The engine management system light is on and the RAC ran a computer diagnosis which came back saying the primary coil had failed. The garage have now replaced the coil but it has not solved the problem of power loss etc. Can you help?

Hi. It sounds like the Ecu has got fried by the coil. Best bet get the Ecu checked.

I considered putting in a reclaimed engine but looking at the Haynes book seems a huge amount of work involved. Have fitted an engine before but not transverse, so gone off that idea except as last resort. Am going to drain sump and clean strainer, change oil pump (inc. pressure relief valve) and hope this sorts the problem. If not Haynes manual suggests dropping engine and gear box together for an engine change, is it possible to remove just engine and not gear box. thank you for all help so far.

Hi. Have you had the oil pressure checked, it could still be an electrical fault.
If the oil pressure is low then the crankshaft and bearings will need checking for damage.
It is possible to remove the engine alone but it is easier to drop the engine and gearbox complete. You will still probably need to release the gearbox mountings anyway to give you a bit more play.
Book time for engine and gearbox removal and refit is about 5 hours so it is up to you if you bother.
