We have a Punto Mk2 2001
15 Months ago we had a serious overheat due to the thermostat failing. and cooked the engine.
After having this fixed the EM light Flashes on at 65 mph ,
lower speed and eventually it goes out
Fiat garage Diagnostics indicate Multiple Missfire.
New plugs and leads recommended and fitted, no difference
So much for Fiat Garages.
My local garage (not fiat) but reputable still diagnoses Missfires. but engine does not miss a beat, they suggest leaving it until it gets worse, otherwise its an expensive change it and see situation.
Last week on a long run 300 miles The problem reverse with the EM light coming on at low revs but going out as speed increased,
however it was a one off, we are back to the original problem
Any suggestions would be appreciated, I need it fixed in order to sell.

Might be worth doing a system re-learn, you should be able to find the exact procedure on the net. Basically you have to rev to 5000rpm then let drop to 2500 rpm 3 times in succession. If I am wrong someone will put you right.

yellow symbol on my dashboard shaped like an engine (i think) has come on today on my 02 plate fiat punto. The car is driving fine no probs can anyone tell me what this means?

i have just had my punto into my local garage for a enginge mangement unit,they fitted a re-con unit,the car is running fine but the engine light is flashing and the garage cant work out why,they had the dignostic machine back on and say there are no faults.can any body help!!!!

I have the same problem. I had a new ECU fitted and the engine management light is now flashing but the car is running ok and no fault codes are showing on the computer. Nobody seems to know the answer. It looks like I will have to take it to a Fiat garage which I really didn't want to do as they are so expensive. let me know if you find out the answer to the rpoblem.

it is a 02 punto,and it was the ecu unit was changed and now the warning light is flashing,but car driving fine.

Try the phonic learn as mentioned earlier (rev up etc), other than that Fiat diags I guess.

Hi, I have a 2001 Punto ELX 1.2 8v which intermittently puts on the handbrake warning light when under heavy braking or turning left say at a roundabout it soon goes out again,but it`s so annoying. I`m thinking on the lines of a faulty wheel sensor.As far I can tell from my Haynes manual and by looking at the brake calipers there are no pad wear sensors which may be putting the light on, pads are good anyway, tried disconnecting handbrake switch with no effect. Appreciate any feedback.

Hi. It is more than likely to be the fluid level, check and top up if necessary.

thanks for your reply,checked brake fluid level rather than being low it is filled above max into the filler neck,that`s Fiat dealers for you, could this be the problem?. I will remove some fluid to between min/max & see if that cures my prob.

Hi. It could be that the float is stuck or it has a faulty sensor.
Try temporarily bypassing the level sensor to see if this corrects the problem.
One last thing.. Why do you go to the main dealers ?

Thanks again for replying, I think Ive got the fluid level right done several runs braking sharply and turning sharp left and right turns with no light. I`ll bear in mind what you say about the float/sensor, as to why I have been to Main dealers, as we have had the car from new and whilst under warranty I thought it prudent to get the stamps in the book.Now that you have helped me to solve my problem I think it`s time to change.

Just purchased a 1.2 Punto for my other half. X reg 60k. Polished up a treat! Having read thru this forum am now slightly concerned, however forums tend to promote the negative side of a vehicle and not the positive. at present no warning lights at all, everything works except front drivers side wiper as declared by seller. On investigation the wiper motor is OK, but the mechanical swivel arm connection is U/S. Have fixed temporarily with a tap washer and "hard as nails" glue. Time will tell! Anyone else experienced this? If so what's the cost for proper fix?
How can I tell if it's an 8 valve or 16 valve? Does it matter?
So far so good.

Hi, can`t help with cost of repairing wiper linkage. As far as I know and my Haynes manual SOHC (8-valve) engine is about 60 bhp & DOHC (16-valve) engine is about 85 bhp. The best way to tell is the type of air filter, (8-valve) has a smaller rounded edge filter sitting directly above the engine and has a rubber plug as the oil filler cap where as the (16-valve) has a much larger and rectangular air filter extending to the front of the engine bay and has a round engine oil filler cap.

Hi
I had to buy two complete motors for my wipers. I think this is a common fault with them. Nothing as simple as buying just the wiper blade. It cost me nearly £100 each time.
Other faults of the punto include. Head gasket blowing. Power steering light coming on and the steering is like driving a tank. Could come on for a day or two then it goes off so your power steering is fine again. According to this site it is quite a common problem.
My car i bought new in 2000. I am buying a different car this year, yes you got it not a Punto. It has cost me quite a lot of money.
Hope you do not get the same problems that i have had and quite a lot of people have had on this site.

I have a 1998 PuntoS, and I haven't got the handbook for it so i'm lost....
On the dash there is only two light indicators,one for low fuel and another for ????
It's this one thats on can anyone tell me the fault,sorry can't be more specific.
