Hi Mark,The Fiat Dealer, suprisingly enough have been cheaper than other garages for the repair. Replaced and tested ECU £279+Vat but they included the diagnostic test with the labour,£50 I think. Total I paid was £389 and the car has been running fine for about 5 days now. As Ford dealers as well, there is a 2004 3dr Focus 1.6 Edge 28,000 miles in great looking condition. £6295 and they offered £4495 P/X.
Pretty good I thought as I am not sure I would get £1800 if I tried to sell our Punto.
Still going to write to the other Garage that ripped me off for the spark plugs though.
Many thanks to all that offered advice and hopefully I can get rid of the Punto before any thing else goes wrong.

Hi sounds like I am having the same problem you had with the power steering. What was the problem and how was it fixed?

Hi. It may just have silicone, they do rust through though.

Hi,
I had a red fixed key symbol (with the word 'code' underneath) light up on my dash this morning, never happened before ... does anyone have an idea what this is or means ??

Hi,
I was driving down the motorway yesterday and my Engine Management light came on and I seemed to be loosing all driving power. The car sat at around 45 - 50mph. My steering etc is fine and seems to be in good working order. Would anyone be able to shed some light on what the problem is, only had the car for 4 months and had quite a few problems already with the stupid thing!! : )

hi, could be any one of the many sensors, or valve problems, best way is get mobile mechanic to run electrical diognois check.

Hi can anyone HELP? i have punto active after a few miles speedo stops working and steering feels light.can someone shed some light on this matter,and would you know if this is an expensive thing to put right?

helloI have a Fiat Punto P reg and god do they cost alot to run only had it a matter of weeks, took it to the garage for a front piece on the exhurst which cost 98 pounds. The bloke said these cars are not cheap to run great I thought, funny that you mentioned the seat belt I thought it was just mine, a little problem looks like its not ! David

i have a fiat punto there is a red light on in it is it like a rynch any ideas,a mechanic i know said its the head gascit? How much would this cost?

Hello, my Punto (2000 W Reg 1.2 ELX) has had a couple of problems I have managed to get sorted out in the ast 3 months since i bought it. Recently, the flexi pipe went on the driver's side, leaking out all the brake fluid, luckily I was in a car park when it went! Since then, got the flexi pipe fixed, brake fluid has been topped out and the pads etc have all been checked. Apparently I have a lazy caliper...My problem though, is since the flexi pipe was replaced and the brake fluid topped up, the brake warning light (the one that comes one when the handbrake is on) stays on. It won't go out. The fluid levels are ok now...any idea of the problem?

Hi. Could be a couple of things, it could be a faulty sensor or there might be a pedal travel switch on the brake paedal and when the brakes were bled this was tripped.

hi! I had the exact same thing,took it a various places they found nothing wrong, i changed 2 my spare key n within a few days all was bk 2 normal, it might b fluke but maybe give it ago if you have a spare key.

help I have just put a alternator on my 2000/2001 and then the alternator belt sheddesd itself I repalce the belt, but the battery light stayed on charged the battery, now it won't start but ai have noticed the crank sensor end is worn away could this stop it starting :(

hi. i have a fiat punto 1.2 16v sporting s reg. i was driving home yesterday when the injection system malfunction light came on. i lost all power, the car was trying to stall, it was chugging and shaking like crazy. i haven't driven it since.i went to start it today and it won't tick over at tall now. does any body know what could be causing this? please help!!

My freind had this problem and he got it sorted from a back street garrge for 20 quid it was a loose connecction apparently
