My power steering wanring light has flashed on and off briefly since i got the car a few years ago. Lately the steering has gone off when on full lock but only when stationary.
There is now a loud buzzing noise coming from the power steering motor area which changes in relation to where the steering is positioned. I have also lost the power steering twice whilst going down dual carriageways. when i stop i turn the ignition off and restart and all is fine and the steering works again.
Does this sound like it needs a new column, i have not come across anyone yet that has said that there power steering is noisey.
also if i buy a recon steering unit and ecu will it need to be programmed to the car?

I would give up with the Punto. I've had one for 9 months and have had to replace everything on it.New exhaust
New clutch (x 2)
New cambelt (x2)
New sump
Flexi pipe went on one of brakes, leaked brake fluid everywhere, and left me with no brakes when driving. Scary stuff. Common fault apparently
Head gasket went
Electric windows went They don't work. As soon as you fix something, something else goes. Get rid while you still have your sanity.

Hi Del, was interested to read your message on the forum. Think I may have a similar problem with the wifes car (99 Punto 60). Starts from cold fine everytime, but occaisionally when warmed up and left a short while when trying to restart the engine it turns over fine but doesnot fire. The key code and immobiliser seem to be working fine i.e the light goes off etc. If left for 10 - 15 mins, starts again fine. very annoying. does this sound lke the crankshaft sensor problem you experienced?

my fiat punto is an x reg had the stering shaft replaced and it drives fine but now fiat have told me the head gasket has blown and it will cost 600 pounds 2 repair is there a cheaper alternative? my car now shudders when you drive and theres a loss of power when accelerating is this down to my head gasket or something else ? if you no wot these problems please help.

Hi. Yes there is a cheaper alternative, find a local independant garage and get them to do the job, you don't say whether it is an 8 or 16 valve but you may be able to reduce the quote by as much as half.

i live in sunderland tyne and wear and i have an 03 reg punto. my head gasket blew and i did not have to pay half that what you have been quoted.

How much you pay depends on a lot of things, ie engine type, whether the head was refaced, whether new head bolts were used and whether the timing belt kit was replaced also . As with all things, cheapest isn't always best .

The management light is on in my punto.Took it to the Garage.they unable to diagnoise the cause.

Hi. If the light is on then there should be fault codes to aid diagnosis, exactly which light is on ?
Are there any symptoms ?

Hi We are having problems with a y reg punto the engine block warning light keeps coming on the 1st time it happened we took it to the garage
[the car had just been purchased a month previous for the G/daughter to go to Uni in ] were they put in a new timimg belt repaired a leaking sump and replaced the brake pads as we arranged a service for her
The engine block light has once again come back on 2 weeks later any help on this problem as it cost nearly £600 for the last little lot

Hi. The light you are referring to is the engine management light, find a garage to read the fault codes and get it sorted asap,

Hi there Thank you so much for your quick reply we have booked it back in to the AA garage [at Halfords ] who we took it to last week when it first came on
If they cant do it how do we know who can without going to Fiat please
I think this will be the shortest owned car ever we cant have her going to uni [long drive] if its dangerous
We,,ll see what hapopens on sat when it goes in again spoken to daughter this garage can do it but they said it wasnt showing anything up last time

Hi. most garages including Halfords should have a code reader at least. ring around for quotes for diagnosis as it will vary a lot.

hello there,just woundering if u ever sorted out ur engine mangement light on ur punto,ive just had a new ecu fitted and the engine mangement light is flashing and power steering light is on,but car is running fine hope to here from u thanks.kieran

Hi they say everything points to the catalistic convertor dont know whether to bother or get rid of as I believe this can be expensive

I wouldn't have thought the catalytic convertor would cause the idle fault you describe but it can cause jerky running and loss of top end power
