My Punto has a running water sound when gently revved, the coolant level has gone UP in the reservior. Does this sound like anything u had?
There is a little dirty oil along the point where the upper and lower engine meet. (I've been told this is where the head gasket is.) but this has been there for about 2 yrs (its an 02 reg i've had from new.

I have had this water running noise, its trapped air in the system and means the system needs blead , and as far as the leak it sounds like your headgasket watch out i am on my 4th and i have only done 9,000miles

Thanks very much. Its gone into the garage today. They said it sounded like the head gasket. Hopefully they'll think to bleed the radiator as well then. I also told the garage about a light that come and goes on the dash, i think its the "engine control system". I hope thats not the ECU i've heard people talking about, this could end up being a usless car.
4th Gasket? Mine is an 02 reg and 42,000 miles. I was peeved at the possibility of mine going, feel sorry for you. Garage said head gasket is very comon with punto's. Do u know if once its goes once, its very common to keep going?
If so, i'll sell my punto as soon as fixed, and get another car. Wont be new as i can't afford it, but one guarantee, is that it wont be a Fiat!!!
Prob i have with this is that mine will hopefully have to be fixed under extended waranty, which garage said can take time.
DOH!!!

Well I have just received a phone call from the garage they have written off my car! Due to the massive blow it had when I hit the stone the ECU is dead apparently!
I am a bit gutted but like you said this will be the first and last time i ever set eyes on a fiat but all in all it been a good car until one thing went wrong and once that happens its one thing after another if I was you I’d sell as mines had 2 new head gaskets and I should of sold mine after that! Good luck

Hi. I am surprised that you are having so many problems with head gaskets, perhaps it isn't the engine but the gaskets that the dealers use, I have done head gaskets on Fiats of all types and never had one back yet. So the reason for my post is to say don't despair and don't keep on taking it to the dealers for the repair. Take the car to and independant garage and ask them to use Payen gasket sets and to make sure the head is refaced and new bolts are used. Good luck. !!!!!

Hi Claire,
Sorry for the late reply! Yes the car is fine now!! have you had new pads lately? how often do you use your car? i use mine for commuting to work, the pads get really dirty, good tip is to stick a pressure washers head into the front of he wheels, its suprising how much dirt gets in there!!

My car has been written off apparently the ECU had failed so they were better off writing it off a bit misfortunate really but these things happen!

Hi,
I decided not to spend nearly £600 on a new steering column motor. I didn't want to throw money into a car I was starting to have no faith in....especially after reading the comments on this site. I was half expecting the ECU to go as well. So I decided to trade in my Y reg punto in for a new clio, I got £2000 trade in price with the fault it had with the steering column and a cracked windscreen, bald tyre, slight dent on the door and a front seat that has not moved forwards for a few years. When my new car was ready to be picked up I had to drive my punto to the garage for the trade in, I was a little nervous because the steering was very heavy and probably quite dangerous. As I started to pull away the steering seemed fine and the warning light had gone out!!! I could'nt believe it...had it been an electrical fault and the fiat garage was trying to rip me off, who knows, but either way I hate garages and find it very hard to believe anything they say. Anyway I have no regrets buying my new car, and hopefully no large bills for a few years yet.

Well,
My water slushing sound behind the dash was sorted for two days after having "the system bled", but it back now. I also needed the new steering col for about 1 year, but not spending on it. I'm looking at getting a second hand Ford Focus this weekend. My Punto is an Active Sport import at uk spec, so i'll see what i get trade in. Its 2002 (02), hoping to get as much as possible for it obviously, but not holding my breath for much more than 2k either really. I should look up what its worth, but it has got a small rip in the bumper where someone hit me up the back-side and drove off.

Hi I feel desperate..! I have been having the ems , and other lights coming on, with poor starting up, very intermittently, had it into garage, cant find anything wrong even with the readings, cannot determine this fault..they say it could be the 'coils' ? but take it to Fiat where it should be under warranty still, (which I must check) wHAT IS STRANGE IS THAT IT ONLY STARTED AFTER A FULL SERVICE, WHICH SEEMS MORE THAN A COINCIDENCE. Can anyone advise me please, its 03 so hopefully will be under warranty?

If it is a UK car it will still be under waranty, so take it there ASAP. I've had a few probs with my Punto that i had from new (02 plate). I've got no faith in it. I pick up a second hand focus tonight. I think thats every Punto owners safest bet.

Thanks for your reply, I have it booked onto the code reader tomorrow, and Its 'an extended warranty ' now, so may or may not be covered ..guess which it will be ! It costs £56 + VAT, before you even start, to get codes checked. there is an ecu recall, so fingers crossed it will be covered, whatever. Its such a shame, as I have had it for a year with no trouble, but just dont feel confident any more ! and its so intermittent, that I just dont know when it may not start !

Hi, My power steering light keeps coming on and yes I have just found out that it is a common fault (my local garage has quoted me £668 excl VAT and excl fitting) to put this right. But on top of this the management light keeps coming on along with the brake ABS light, this has been hooked to the computer in the garage and there is no code on the management system so don't know what this is. Also, some mornings the car just cuts out (as though I have stalled it) but with no lights on the dash, I have to wait for about 2 mins to restart it. can any one please let me know if they have the same problem and what they did to their car to sort it out.
Thanking you

My Punto is a 2002 model and now needs a new ECU also. Also needed the ignition coils replaced!! My car has done under 9000 miles and I am really angry at having to pay for this type of repair so soon. Did you get anywhere by complaining as I will certainly be doing so?

thanks for reply, I would say just check, as there is an ECU recall, though they said it wasnt on my year, but may be on yours.... I think the coils may be whats wrong, but since my original, local, garage 'fiddled' with them, the lights haven't come on again ! are they really that sensitive? I will get it hooked up to fiat's code reader, if it goes on again, as it loses power, and doesnt start very well. My fingers are well and truly crossed! I am slightly amazed that FIat charge to be put on the code reader, before even starting, but dont seem to recognise that this IS a problem with Punto's ! They must be making a fortune just from that little exercise!! Cynical me ! Isnt it covered under the warranty ? it may be just an extended one ? How much ahave they quoted you to pay for the repairs, please regards sandra
