Citroën Xantia height adjustment problems

I bought a 1993 Xantia 1.6i last week. In order to measure the hydraulic fluid level, I raised the car to the highest position. After checking and topping up fluid, it was impossible to get the rear end of the car in normal driving height again (although I had no problem putting it in the two extreme positions). I even tried to turn off the engine, and wait for the car to lower it self before starting again, but it went straight up to highest position (with the adjustment leverer in normal mode).
After jerking the adjustment lever back and forth in all possible positions for quite a while, I put it in second-highets position(which seemed to work as well), then I put the adjustment leverer in normal driving position and drove home. I do not know if the rear end of the car is still in second highest position.
Does anyone know what causes this mysterious behaviour?
Is this how a Xantia is supposed to work?

Bye for now,
Einar
