i'm trying to mate up the top and bottom ends of my engine. I changed the head recently- and didn't discover until i had it all back together again that my girlfriend had tried to start it while the head was off -thus moving the bottom end! So when i turn it over by hand now- metal meets metal.
I cant find any marks on the crankshaft pulley wheel or round about it about to set it up at TDC, and i don't want to take it to bits again. Any ideas how best to get the 2 set up correctly?
Any help appreciated!
Cheers

there is a hole up under the starter motor that goes through to a hole in the flywheel 8mm u can use a piece of rod or a 8 mm drill
but i dont like doing it this way but each to there own i think u will be very lucky if u have not bent any valves if u r getting noises from your top end .U can buy the proper timing kit for about £12 to £15 it will save u having to remove the starter the kit has three bolts 1 for locking your camshaft sprocket and 2 for locking your diesel pump.and the proper rod for locking your flywheel

Thanks Dave,
i'll give it a go thanks. Top end will be ok- the engine didn't turn over on the starter- i only turned the crankshaft by hand. i noticed you mentioned the diesel pump- does it have to be matched up too? Where are the locking points for it? Do you have to get the kit from a citroen dealer then?
Cheers

1 your girl freind owes you one.

as previous person said you need an 8 m drill bit and put it through the hole just behind the starter, it goes into the clutch housing, you will then have to turn the crank until the drill can go into the hole in the flywheel. this will lign up the crank.

The diesel pump pully has a hole in it, you need an ordinarry 2+ 1/2 inch 8 m bolt put it through this hole and bolt it into the cylinder head ( the matching hole is at about 2 o'clock)

the cam shaft may have to be turned as you line up the crank,

the cam shaft also has a hole and coresponding threaded hole on the head, fit another bolt the same as the pump.

the engine etc is now all locked, and you can fit your NEW cam belt. and tension it etc ..

as you have had it all apart, i would remove the bolts and drill bit !
turn the engine by hand two full revolutions and then if no resistance felt (apart from normal compression) re fit Drill and bolts, if they all line up exactly you should be OK.

Now important before start up, disconnect the stop solenoid and
give the engine 2 or 3 6-8 second bursts on the starter this will prime the oil back around the engine (tuerbo if fitted).

re connect solenoid, and it will start up as soon as any air in the
pipework is expelled.

all the best

Al

you can get 2 bolts from B&Q for less than 5op
and we've all got old drill bits in the shed.I've never had any probs doing my cam belts this way for last 10 years.

Your fitting a new timing belt I assume, be sure to check and replace the water pump. I'd say more often than not with a new belt they leak.

The extra bit of tension when fitting the new belt usually causes the wp to leak if, its worth replacing for cost of them, there around £20.

Plus, if it does start leaking, you have to remove and re-fit the belt again.

Hope this helps.
