Hi im after bit of advice and guidance. Just had head gasket go yet again on rover 400. Decided to get a recon gead as mine reached skim limit. After i fitted i was unable to start so stripped it down again to check tappets movement as i had this before. Freed them off and reassembled. Still unable to start i tried tow bump starting to get going. This worked and it ticks over without a problem. When i press accelarator it completely cuts out. I am unable to start agin by ignition so back to tow bump start which gets it going again. Whilst still being towed i press down accelrator but there is no power, instead i get a horsey sound. Any ideas whats causing this and how to rectify?

Many thanks
darren

Hi. Sounds like you haven't connected a component or an earth.
I presume you have checked the cam timing ?

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I have a 1997 K Series rover 216sli. The temperature gauge is at rock bottom and it's staying there. I reckon the fan's not working either however when i take out the second fan fuse (the one that's joint with the rear wiper) the fank kicks in (probably there to stop the fan kicking in until required). Anyway these are all assumptions. Can anyone help?

Thanks
Guppy

To check the fan bridge the fan temp sender & it should kick in.
To check the temp sender for the gauge you need a meter. when cold you should have around 1750 ohms this drops to around 130 ohm. You are looking to see if the resistance changes as the temp changes.
The gauge live feed is shared with the rev counter & fuel gauge. So if there was a fault here the other gauges wouldn't work either.

should be where the top coolant hose goes into the engine.
you need to pull back the wire clip first.

Just bought a 416...no problems on the test drive but...now sometimes when I come to a stop ... I find the revs drop very quickly and the car stalls. STarts OK no problems. I think it happens most when I have to push the clutch in and brake on the coast ..the rev counter drops like a stone and then engine stops! Anyone have any ideas?

Hi. It coiuld be a number of things, the most likely is the idle control valve. It could be one of a number of sensors or a leaking vacuum / breather hose, so before you start buying any parts, get it diagnosed correctly.

Hi
Have had our H reg 416 gsi with honda engine for a few years now has always run no bother, but lately have had real probs starting, been checked by both mechanic and electric guy who both can find nothing wrong. Still a problem starting though. Engine turns over but won't fire, no chance early morning but by mid day if you try again it will catch not while you are turning key in iginition but just as you let go....curious,
Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply..... will look at these areas at the weekend. I have been trying to figure out if there is a pattern and there really isnt. I drove lots today.... and it didnt stall once..then last thing just as I slowed to turn the corner on my road it stalled..... does this point to anything in particuar?

IF YOU HAVE POWER STEERING THEN IF YOU TURN ON FULL LOCK IT WILL MAKE THE ENGINE REVS DROP ANYWAY. SO IT MAY BE NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR PROBLEM

Could be either or both H/G-head split,is it running ok,as split head doesnt usually cause any running problems,(depending on how bad the split is that is)

Hi I've got a rover 416 and it starts first time in the cold as well as hot. the problem is it runs on (when cold) 4 cyls for about 1 minute and then goes to 3 cyls. after 5 minutes goes to 4 cyls.
I have hade the car for 3 years now and no person can tell me what to do. I have been told thet it may a be sticky vave but why as it run with the same problem for so long with no change.
I would appreciate if anyone can, help,I have put injector cleaner in and helped a bit. I've taken all spark plugs out and they are all a good brown colour. Don't know what to do next.

In other words, its missing, check distributor cap- rotor arm-HT leads and possibly the coil..any one of these could be breaking down under load

Thanks for the reply but I've already done all that. I have been told it may be a sticky valve and use injector cleaner but does not seem to help.

some people seem to think additives are the be all and end all of problems in an engine,IMO your best bet is to get it stripped down, most petrols would contain enough chemicals to sort out your problems anyway, but as it has not, a stripdown is in order

Hi my rover is really anooying me now. Only started a few days back. It was overrevving and i would have to change gears or switch car of as it was getting higher and higher.
BUT today it was doing that more frequently and also i was driving and it seemed to switch of the engine, Wouldnt start again as i kept trying whilst rolling downhill buut eventually did with the engine strugling. Any ideas on what it coudld be. Also it seems that there was a clicking noise coming in the bonnet somewhere.
