Hi. Depending on what Rover you have got, it could ne a split hose or air leak, or it could be the idle control valve.

hi checked an old remedy for sticky valves and worked a marvel. it is to use bake fluid.

You fill a sqirter with brake fluid (no mor than 50ml) take the intake hose off at the inlet manifold and while idle skowly not fast add the brake fluid, you have to rev every two skwirts to allow butterfly to open to let fluid through. You will see a slight amount of blue smoke out the exhaust but only for a short while. Remember if you administer the fluid too fast you could cause an oil lock in the combustion chamber which could cause real damage.

It worked for me and I started it int the cold this morning and it ran on all 4 for the first time in over 2 years

May cause damage anyway as brake fluid is more combustible than petrol,it wont cause oil lock as it burns too quickly...Not advisable to use this!

Why dou you say brake fluid is more combustible than petrol? I went to motor school and it was always a common cure with older motors so why is it suddenly dangerouse now.

As I explained it worked for me.

Its been known for years, due to accident fires that were originally put down to petrol pipe breaks, ie, fuel was thought to leak on exhaust and burst into flames..it was discovered brake master cylinder broke away from its mounts and the fluid was causing a more intense fire than the fuel would have done..

thevman2k,The ecu can be read for faults by a good workshop. If you can't find any faults then disconnect the ecu to reset it. Leave disconnected for at least 20min or overnight. I have a 214 that does the same as yours & this cures it.

I would like to just say that brake fluid may be a goog fuel but burns alot slower than petrol. have you ever tried to start a fire with brake fluid?

Thevman: We had similar proplems with a 1192 Rover 214 and found as the last member said the ecu needed resseting and would also sugest the same thing. If your car has an allarm/imm don't disconect the battery for 24 hours as you might find getting your fobbs to work properly might be a mission. Otherwise just disconect the plug on the ecu but leave the vaccume pipe connected, leave for 24 hours and reconect. good luck

Just because the water has not disappeared does NOT mean the head gasket has gone. Check for leaks first . Then get it diagnosed properly.

Hi. I would think it would be around £350. including new thermostat, system flush, head bolts gaskets and machining. But what other car can you get for the repair cost. When running they are quite good cars.

You need to establish if it is the head gasket yet. Could be a hose leak or water pump. Look around & under the engine for any leak. Check the dip stick for any water contamination. Running the engine take the coolant filler off & see if there is pressure building up. Top up the coolant with the engine running. Repeatedly press the top & bottom hoses to get air out. Have the heater control set to hot. When hot see if you have water circulation the thermastat should have opened & both top & bottom hoses should be hot. If just the top one is boiling hot then the thermastat is stuck shut so needs changing. If ok but all the water is now pumping out of the filler then either you have an air lock or the pump is faulty. Regular bubbles of would be signs of a head gasket. Take the car around the block with the cap off & top up if needed when you get back.
Like Terriers says, when running they are good cars. A proper head gasket job should see you right for the rest of the life of the car.

Hi, probably you have got problem with your charcoal canister and the purge valve on top of it. As you described it, seems very similar to what I had with mine. You probly need to disconnect the pipe from your inlet port, blank it off (block it). Do the same to the other pipe going to the charcoal canister. Disconnect the wire from the purge valve. It only soaks up the petrol fumes and evaporates back into the engine when it is running. if it is broken, you can buy one for about £60.00 from rover dealer. It is not worth it, `cause it will pass the MOT without anyway. Mine had the same problem, it was so bad, that the overflow pipe was full of petrol, pouring with petrol. Not good, when the whole car smelt of petrol with a baby in it. So, after this done to mine it was ok. No problem ever since. Runs fine, it does around 7liters/100km on the motorway on constant 75mph speed, 2-3 up+lagguage. Do not waste your pounds on the main dealer. It is very dangerous when you try to overtake and the power drops, I know the feeling. Try these, and send me a mail, I am interested, if it cured it.
