Rover 1996 416I
I had experienced the car revving badly sometimes it was so bad I would have to switch the engine off and on again.Other times it would cut out at junctions. The last time the car went it shuddered and lost power and hasnt started since.
the car has plenty of spark and the petrol is there in the fuel rail but the petrol injectors are not opening up.Unless you turn the starter over a few times the plugs are not getting wet.
The ECU has been away but nothing was found to be wrong with it.
Has anyone else expierenced any problems like this?
Please can you help?

I have and the only thing that worked for me was a new ECU. Its worth a try. I found mine from a breakers yard on Ebay for £35. Revving and cutting out have stopped and yet Rover garage couldn't find andything else wrong.

You say "Unless you turn the starter over a few times the plugs are not getting wet." This means that the injectors are working. So could be plugs a coil or resistance in king lead dis cap or rotor arm. Your poor running may be solved due to the time the ecu has been disconnected. It will have reset to its original map. Could of course be cam belt.

it may also be map sensor in the ecu, this is VERY popular fault also IF you buy a second hand ecu and its a car registered after 1995 IT WONT WORK, its coded to the car so make sure it has been virginised (dissconecting the ecu while the car is running is NOT fix) it only MIGHT work

>>dissconecting the ecu while the car is running is NOT fix
Might be a permanent fix,if it blows the ecu as happens now and again!

Hi can anyone tell me how the crank sensor can determine the firing order as well as fuel injector timing. It has always confused me as the crank does two revolutions per cycle.
Can anyone help?

Hi. When you did the compression check had the engine been run at all ? It usually takes a minute or so of running the engine before the tappets settle down. As long as the bolts were replaced etc the head should be fine, I doubt if a head problem would give the same readings on all cylinders. Is the valve timing 100% right ?

I had the same problem with lack of compression after replacing head gasket ie just would not fire even after tow starting. I ended up stripping down again as there were hardly any movement in tappets. Used a large bolt and a vice to manually free the tappets (most of which had practically seized up) and washed them out in a bath of diesel to get rid of old oil and gunge by squeezing the tappet until full travel of the tappet plunger and clean derv was comng out, then refilled them all in a bath of fresh oil before refitting. Once re-assembled it started first time and runs well ever since.

hi there thanks for your reply, when i had the head scimmed the head was replaced, would not start off key but towed it got it running, but the same problem happened again water went into the oil, so took the head off and got it pressure tested, dont know if he took the tappets out and refilled them with oil and replaced them, since this found the problem head wasnt seating properley on dowls, it was sat to high that was the cause of the water in the oil, the tappets was done by a professional mechanic but i dont know whether he refilled the tappets with oil could this be the problem, still will not start from key and wont run with a tow like it did the first time. regards peterb
