Hi. I would double check the camshaft timing and make sure that the cams are fitted on the correct dowels. If I could see the car I am sure I could find the problem but over the internet it can be very hard to diagnose the fault. If you do need to take the timing belt off then also remove the camshafts and the tappets, then drain the tappets. then when it is all re-assembled turn it over for a few 15 second bursts with the plugs removed.

if you look at the cam pullies the inlet and exhaust are in the middle of the pully, the bottom pully timing mark lines up with the bottom of the pump for top dead centre, the dowls behind the pullyes line up at 1 o,clock and 8 o, clock, they have been checked by a mechanic and he says they are spot on, thanks for your info if there is anything else i would appreciate it . new battery earth leads redone,i personaly dont think it spins over enough to get the compression regards peterb

sorry I haven't replied to the advert regarding to the starting of the rover 416, as i can't work the computer myself I have to wait for my grandaugter to do it for me, I thank you all very much for answering the message. The fault has now been found in the wiring loom which earths the petrol injectors, it is now up and running. The ECU was checked and there was no faults found in it. The fitter said that the over revving was caused by the shorts which he found in the loom. Many thanks.

Hi all fellow 416 owners/sufferers, Mine has been playing up when starting. Most times it fires immediately, other times it needs to turn over a couple of times - but ocassionally it just cranks and cranks and cranks.... Also, it doesn't like to re-start within a couple of minutes of being switched off. Now, and this has just happened this pm, I decided to check the plugs and found the recess for the 2nd one from the left (when facing w'screen) full of oil up to the top of the plug, plus the ht lead holder cracked. Could this be the root cause ? My local garage says it's a common prob. & there's a drain hole in the bottom of the plug recess draining oil from the cam box & eventually it gets bunged up. Roll on Monday when they'll hopefully sort it. Cheers, all 416 mashocists..

Hi. I wonder if somebody can help me here. Im having problems with my 1997 rover 416 Si . I havent driving it for a 5 days and something happened. The engine doesnt start. At the fist time the engine starts working for about a 2 seconds and smoothly stopped. Now it just turns over and wont start. There is plenty of petrol in the car, starter, battery and fuses are ok. Is there something I could check by myself before I have to spend an unusual amount of money?

Hello all.I have a rover 416 Preg. I have been having starting problems. The car will start first time and runs ok. When switched off and returned to after a couple of minutes it seems like the starter motor is lazy and wont start( as though the battery is flat). Go back a day later and it will start. I have had the battery checked thats ok(pretty new), i have checked all earth connections and emmery clothed them all, added a extra earth, there is 14+volts coming off alternator. The starter motor does sound lazy when starting could this be the issue? any feedback would be much appreciated.thank you.

If the starter is lazy, it may need replacing as they are not all curable by stripping and cleaning.!

I had the starter, plugs, dist. cap, ht leads and cam box gasket replaced yesterday. I managed to stall it backing out, to drive to the garage & it wouldn't re-start. Had to push it to the kerb. Starter would just crank for a couple of secs then make a quiet, sad little clunk.... left if a couple of minutes & tried again - success ! brmm brmm... one working Rover. Luckily the starter replaced the one fitted in August when the clutch failed, so the garage warranty covered it. Now, it's instant start every time (so far), repeated starts no problem, doesn't even have that half second hesitation between crank and fire that it always used to have...

Hi, not a 416 but related! I have a Rover 25 1.4, I've just had the head gasket replaced along with a full service: Cambelt, plugs, fuel filter, air filter, oil etc. The problem is that is seems to be getting progressively harder to start. It doesn't matter if the engine's hot or cold, and the weather makes no difference. Once it starts, it runs fine: very quiet and very smooth. This starting thing bothers me, though, as it originally became difficult when the head gasket failed. Any Ideas? Sean

I was even dissconnecting when i wasnt using it incase it was the alarm draining it. I thought the same about the starter motor draining battery. Will let you know when i change the starter motor how it goes. thanks.
