fuel pump is not affected by knocks.but has a switch to cut fuel off in event of an accident, fuel pump failure is not usually down to pump itself but electrical failure in between ignition switch and pump

I have a 1997 Rover 416 si and it has cost me so much in repairs now that I feel like getting the local darlings to torch it! In its latest of bad tempers it will turn over and then nothing, takes a good few seconds for it to catch and turn over too. It was fine yesterday! The headgasket blew two years ago this month and I had that repaired so I hope to god that's not on its way again. It recently had a new starter motor, water pump and MOT - emissions were on the border line if thats any help. Please help, my dad, who used to fix all my car woes now lives miles away! God, I miss him :(

Hi. You don't say how well the car is serviced, the first things to check / replace are plugs, leads, distributor cap and rotor arm. Make sure the oil is the right specification. Check the temperature sensor and oxygen sensor.

Hi. Is the car serviced correctly ? New plugs etc? Does the engine run ok, are there any issues other than the consumption.

If I read you right,it will only fire with oil put into cylinders?,if so your piston rings have gone. time for a recon unit

I have a 416 which is exactly like a prevoius post. It starts and runs fine for a few days. Then it refuses to start, but turns over normally. Leave it for a few days and it will start and run ok again. Have changed the coil as there was no spark. No difference. Then it ran again next day. Now it is dead again. This car has the Honda engine. I wonder if the crankshaft sensor on this engine is a prime suspect?

Hi. I think you will find that it is the distributor, there is no separate crankshaft sensor.

I finally got mine going with a change of spark plugs, looked like it hadn't been firing on number 4 for sometime. The other 3 were nice and brown and number 4 was just oily?
Also does anyone know of a reputable garage on the Wirral who can do a tune up without ripping me off?

Hi, do u think this could be my problem? I have a 94/95 214 SEI 16 which keeps failing it's MOT because of high emissions. The HC readings are way too high (1888) and the CO levels are too low (0.832). It fires up 1st time every time (even when cold), but when cold after firing up, if you try to rev the engine, it splutters and dies and you have to then start again and leave it idle for 3-4 mins before you can set off. I have already changed air intake temp sensor, lamda sensor, new ECU, checked the piping to the ECU to make sure clean, and still have this problem. I have also had two diagnostic tests done from different garages and they both said it reads "No fault found". I don't know what else to try apart from this fuel pump system. I started with these problems not long after I had a bit of a smash on the front end of the car so with you saying these are prone to shock/damage, maybe it is this that needs replacing? Please can you advise ASAP. Thanks

Hi. Firstly the CO level is not too low. Have you tried the coolant temp. sensor and all earth points. The Lambda sensor could be at fault and this would not show on a diagnostic test. Of course the obvious fault could be the catalytic converter.

Hi, again though it is all guess work. How can it be the lambda sensor as this was brand new, only fitted 6 weeks ago if that. I have been told it could be the cat, but again this was new only 3months ago. I don't really want to be spending more money only to find out afterwards that my problem is not solved. I have spent almost £400 now in total just to try and cure these emission problems.

Hi dude, I'm in Norfolk & at the mo I can't start my N reg 416 lsi so I can't make it to Bucks....
Can I ask some advice?
Various different Scenarios Starts first turn, drives 200 yards then cuts out - smell of petrol. Revs at 2500-3000 on idle. Will not start (sometimes from cold, occasionally hot) smell of petrol. Starts first time even after running battery down night before. Starts but will not idle. Will not start, but if I open the filler cap(sharp intake of air), starts first time (!)
New leads, spark at plugs with crankcase sensor connected, none when sensor disconnected (sensor ok?).
Driving me mad! Any ideas? Paxoid
I'm suspectin the fuel pump.
