It has been suggested that the ECU is faulty. They said it sounds like the timing is out.

To check whether it is the timing kicking back, disconnect the coil and then turn the engine over for a short time to see if there is any difference.
Try some good quality jump leads with the negative one to your engine not the battery, this will show whether it is your cables / earths.
What oil are you using ?

I have had one where it had serious problems starting, although this was when it was cold, all it was in the end was that he had bought some cheap oil which was the wrong grade.

Hi, I have recently bought a 416GSI as a runabout. It's a 1993 with 46k miles. Today the engine revs started to drop whilst driving, the tacho needle dropped like a stone before coming right back up again - in true kangaroo petrol style!

The problem doesn't seem to present when the car is idling at nornal temp, only when it gets above around 2000rpm.

I have checked the ECU in the footwell and there are no indications from the LED. I'm therefore thinking that it's not the distributor or any of the other sensors (as this would be indicated by a fault condition?)

There has been some mention of resetting the ECU by disconnecting it; what's the best method of doing this - should I remove all fuses marked 'engine management'?

Any clues gratefully received.

Hi. Just because there are no indications from the Ecu doesn't mean it isn't the distributor, with the tacho needle dropping like that it means there is a total loss of signal. try to get it to play up while stationary that way you can eliminate components.

Thanks for that. But I'm guessing that without a scope it's going to be pretty difficult to isolate the problem from the distributor end. I've not ventured to look inside the dist yet, but is it possible to replace individual sensors or is it better to go for a complete swap out?

At the moment I have the ECU disconnected in the vain hope that it might be a corruption that will erase itself, but I know that is a slim chance (but it's free!)

Thoroughly depressed as I have only had the car a week (bought privately).

Cheers.

Hi. You can still check for a spark etc, I presume it has got a Honda engine, if this is the case then the distributor is a common fault.

If you cant get it to cut out by fiddling with connections to the coil then it is going to be the sensor within the distributor. You can get the parts but it is easier to get a second hand one from your local yard.
Let us know how you get on.

I managed to source a brand new dizzy on ebay for £50, with all sensors, igniter and coil pack on board. Swapped out with the old one and the problem has gone. I suspect the igniter to be the culprit, but I was quoted about the same price for a new one as I paid for the whole dizzy assembly.

Thanks for the pointers on the forum though.

Best regards.

Listen to see if the pump runs when you turn the ign on. You will have to wait another 20 secs before it will run again or it should run when the engine is being cranked. If not check that the fuel cut out has not been kicked. It is under the radio. Designed to cut the engine in the event of a crash it cuts the power to the fuel pump. Try pushing the button & see if it pops in. If ok check the earths & see if you have power at the pump. I assume you have fuel in the tank.

any one got any ideas on this bizzare fault, i have just done the head gasket and big end shells and replaced a few valves on my 416 as they were getting a bit ropey, everything mechanically appears perfect all marks spot on and all pressures appear correct all shiny new gaskets bolt etc used and head skimmed there is a good spark etc
however when accelarating hardish my car kangaroos badly and occasionally cuts out but bump starts itself straight away but only upto around 2500rpm then is perfect it occasionally blips but nothing else at higher revs, if you press pedal fast at idle the engine hesitates before accelerating.
the fault is erratic sometimes it does it some times it dont there appears to be no set pattern of when it does it,
any ideas any one
all parts are on right and all connectors and cables are clean and servicable
