Hi. Rather than just throw loads of money at the car buying parts why don't you just take it to a local garage and get the fault correctly diagnosed.

Well I'm afraid that doesn't sound too good. Do a compression check and inspect the plugs.

I had a 2nd hand 416 SLi for 4 years & put 40,000 miles on it. 2 months ago a 93 yr old woman crashed into me & wrote it, hers, & 2 other cars off. My Rover (M reg) was the best car I have ever owned. It never went wrong & was 100% reliable. Hastings have offered me £200 when I paid £1600 for it. I am surprised to hear about your problems as I was planning to get another 416. Shall I? Ummm!

So many people say how great their rover has been. All cars have their problems so go for whatever car takes tour fancy. Don't however accept the insurance first offer. See what it is going to cost for a replacement identical to what you have lost. Send them clippings from autotrader & your local paper & remind them they are legaly bound to replace your car like for like.
I was once offered £1800 for my mg montego, I could not find a replacement for that money, I eventually got £3,300 pounds in settlement!
Rovers are holding there price on the forecourt so don't let the insurance co. do you.

Matt, as terriers says do a compression test. These are high compression engines & can sometimes seem juddery on tickover. You would be wise to go to a diagnostic centre as in a very short time they can check out your entire engine just by connecting it up to their diagnostic equipment. If it is just a spark plug or ht lead or valve it will show up.
Do replace your ecu temp sender though as this could be your problem with it cutting out, it is a common problem.

Thanks BrianM. I've been on the road (m/cycles as well) for 52 years & this is the first time I have involved in a traffic incident & am a bit green about claims, etc, but I have been advised by a chum not to accept the Hastings offer. My lovely 416 SLi was M reg with 70,000 on it & I came across this site whilst looking for a replacement, so I'll keep looking. Fingers crossed!!
Happy Christmas.

Hi,

I have N reg Rover 416i which has two (I think unrelated) problems:

1. Battery goes flat after about a week of not being used. Not totally flat, but enough that I cannot start it. Current draw with engine off is only 25mA (alarm/radio I assume) and voltage rises to 14V ish when engine is running so I think the alternator must be working. Have replaced battery, but it's no better. I'm Puzzled.

2. Just went wrong suddenly yesterday, engine does not idle and stalls at once. Goes fine when running along, but as soon as you pull up it stalls.

Car is a bit old and rusty, so if I can't fix it myself it's not worth paying someone to look at it, so will have to be scrapped. That would be a shame as otherwise it has been running great.

Thanks for any help.

Steve, check to make sure your alternator belt is tight. At this time of the year we use more power with lights on heater on heated rear screen on. If the belt is slack then the alternator may not be able to produce enough power for all this plus charge the battery. You should have 14.6v when charging. Have the battery drop charge tested to see if it has a faulty plate. have you checked the level of the acid it should be above the plates.
Most common fault to cause the engine not to tickover is a leak on the vacuume. Check back from the vac pipe on the ecu to the engine.

Thanks, I'll check those, although the idle problem now appears to have been fixed. After reading some of the other comments here, I cleaned all the earth connections I could find (cable from battery to bodywork, and two white multiway molex connectors bolted to bodywork, one behind each headlamp), and also cleaned the contacts on the temperature sensor (on radiator top hose), and then the idling was fine. I didn't check the idling while doing any of this so I can't be certain which of these actually fixed it. Cleaning the earth connections also fixed another problem I had with the left headlamp main beam being very dim and a faint buzz coming from the horn when main beam was engaged (both intermittent problems), so there definitely was an earthing problem of some sort, but whether that can cause an idling problem I don't know. There are a lot of earth wires on those two connectors behind the headlamps, so I'm guessing a number of the sensors may be earthed at those points, and I can see how that might upset the ECU.

I've replaced the battery to no effect, so I doubt there's anything wrong with it, but it could be the alternator belt as I did replace the alternator myself a while back.

I have purchased a Rover 416i in October 2007 from a local second hand company. It suddenly stopped last week for no apparent reason.

After having it checked, The Spark Plugs, Distributor Cap, Rotar Arm, Petrol Filter, Battery, Fuel Pump, all have been replaced. Mechanic found dirty petrol in Car, hence replacement of parts. 2 Days ago, it started for about 1min, then went off, which was because of dirty fuel, and all parts got replaced. Now it is not starting at all. Engine still turning and battery still full, sparks coming from spark Plugs and fuel getting in now, due to all dirt being removed and fuel parts being replaced, can anyone help, this is totally stresssing me out????? It is turning just not starting.

You should have the ecu read for any fault codes. You will still get a spark even with a poor coil, check the connectors on the coil for corrosion. Have you seen it injecting fuel or do you just have fuel pressure? do the injectors tap when you crank. Are the spark plugs wet with fuel after trying to start it or dry. Have you tried to spray fuel in the inlet manifold while cranking. Has the temp sender been tested, if it is sending the ecu the wrong value or the cable is broken then the ecu may think the engine is hot & not inject enough fuel.

I have seen the fuel go through the pipe past the filter, but not beyond that. The Ecu test is being done today. Anything else that could be going wrong that can be thought of, as the local mechanic can not??? He believes that there might not be enough fuel going in. He is great at the mechanical side, but dont have the equipment, for doing electrical tests, hence why he is getting someone from outside of his business. He is also asking for any possible items that might have to be replaced, or has he replaced everything that he could and it could just be electrical???? Thank you in advance

Thanks BrianM, it turns out that after the diagnostic test, the only thing wrong with it, is the Petrol Pump Wire, from the pump to the CPU, everything else is in perfect condition. Thank you

Dirty Fuel caused the major problems of fuel starvation, and battery run down, with 2 cells broken, caused the problem of it not restarting it at the beginning.
