Hi everyone, a quick hello as i am new here but as the proud owner of a rover 416 sli thought i would join up just so i can pass on my own experiences of owning a rover, ive had the car approx 6 yrs its an n reg (1996) so shes an old girl now, we have gone through all the traumatic experiences together hgf, clutch, gearbox, etc etc, but 2 weeks ago a new one hit me........ running problems ok so here goes... i go out car runs lovely idles so nice had to rev her at the lights to check she was still running ... go into a car parts shop (i am a regular) come out get in the car starts first time get less than 50 yards up the road and have to pull over the car is hunting, running lumpy loss of acceleration power, stalling, popping from the exhaust when she did rev she was taking to long for the revs to come down, call recovery to come and get my car home (whilst waiting got paranoid maybe the guy in the car parts shop had someone outside tampering with my car just for the extra custom lol) my friend replaced the injectors in the injection unit car starts .... next morning car start but wont fire up ........ ok so im really p****d off now, i mean surely lumpy running unable to drive is better than wont start... i knew the fuel must be getting through it smelt so strong you could get high on it , i changed the spark plugs feeling smug try again nothing ...ok im crying now its too wet and cold to keep walking the kids to school every morning, so i change the ignition leads and put a can of petrol in the tank so now im feeling really smug thinking cant be beat ... hmm right still wont fire up now i am really depressed so decide to arrange for a mobile mechanic to come and run a diagnostic test and decided if that comes up with nothing its scrap yard heaven for the car i love so much in the meantime the old man goes out within 10 mins the car is running ?????? now he is the best thing since sliced bread and i realise i owe him big time (i mean the car has been with a mechanic for almost 2 weeks with no success) the problem was the rotary arm although it looked ok it just wasnt long enough (that little bit of metal) to catch a spark, also where the ignition lead plugs into the back of the engine the connection was quite dirty so he gave that a clean ... the car now starts first time is running smother and i am one happy woman again so please before you admit defeat with your rover even if the rotarty arm looks ok for the sake of 5/6 quid just try replacing that first its much easier than spending out for another motor or even wearing down 2 weeks worth of shoe or trainer tread ;)

Hi. Could be the crank sensor or the distributor cap or rotor arm
temperature transmitter, this also controls the amount of fuel being delivered .

i have a mechanic friend who say's the first thing he looks at with ignition problems and general running like you have is spark plugs, ignition cables, rotor arm, distributor cap and, ignition coil, he said this a lot of years ago before engine management became common place, obviously the lesson here is to go back to the basic principles of the engine first off before goning after any sensors or managment problems.Had an running problem some years back on a fiat, i was told it was the ignition module what ever the hell that is ! genuine part cost £250 if memory serves correct,, i found a generic part for £25 turn out it was the LT cable from the ignition coil was heating up and breaking down whilst running , a few pounds...he's a wise old man that old man of yours :-)

You may have kicked the fuel cut out. It is fitted under the radio on the drivers side. See if you can push the button in. If ok then check pump fuse.

Love this forum and have picked up loads of tips. I own a 416Sli which is a 96 model. LHD as I'm living out in Israel. Had the car 8 years now and she's hardly gave me any bother apart from the usual servicing and general mechanics.

Anyway, I need some advice on something that's really bugging me. Car drives sweet as a nut and has no acceleration, deceleration probs etc but when I park her and slip (she's an auto) her into "Park" almost every time the revs will jump up to around 1200 rpm then really quickly fall to about 400rpm resulting in loads of car vibration. No starting probs whatsoever (touch wood) so before I start shelling out for things I don't need, has anyone experienced this problem before and can advise how they sorted it?? Would be really grateful for the advice, cheers.

Also, one other thing. The headlining on the car is starting to separate. Well, the cotton is seperating from the foam base. Anyone ever experienced this and if so, how did you manage to bond them back together???
Thanks, Tony

jinkz....

it may be a good idea to start a new disscussion and outline your porblem by itself. Otherwise it will just get lost in this 300 + post.
i cant help you but there are plenty of people who will, if the problem comes to there attention. And the way to get it accross is in a disscussion of it's own,,good luck

Hi Jinkz, i know this may sound stupid but you know the airfilter box in the engine(nr the battery) just check the tube that comes out from the bottom of it for any splits or holes, large or small ... because mine had a split and caused the same problem... i have definately come to the conclusion that all rovers are female as they are so tempremental the slightest thing can upset the ecu reading and make the car run like a bag of s**t.... i hope this is what the problem is for you otherwise im afraid its just a case of eliminating things as you go along ;)

hello. my rover 416si 1996 will not start, i drove it 60 miles no problem parked up and then it just would start. fuel not getting through. if i put a current through the wire direct to the plug at the back of the car to the pump it works, but will not work when trying with the key. you have mentioned about the cut off switch but not the location of the cut off switch, can you help

Hi Timmo, the fuel cut off switch is behind the centre console ( where your stereo is) that is definate but im not sure if the are all located in the same place the one i have actually seen was located at the bottom (on the floor) drivers side and looked like a black push botton thing although i do know some are red, to be honest i think its pretty hard to knock the fuel cut off switch and cut the supply ive not even known them to do it in a small prang !! anyway i will leave you with that for now and have a look up and get back to you with any other ideas as i have seen this complaint before elsewhere

thanks for that, i have found it but i think that is not my problem. Have not got alot of hair left now. as so many people say it's this or it's that. have also got a replacement ECU fitted and pump will not turn on unless i bypass it at the plug. someone said it maybe the sender unit in the tank. what ever that is. have you heard of this.

in hope timmo

yes i have a spark. there is no noise coming from the pump at all until i bypass with a current at the wiring plug near the tank. then you can hear the pump. put connect the plug back together and turn the key, and nothing.

HI Timmo, have you checked the plug connections are clean fom any dirt etc, it sound as if the connection plug is knackered and i dont know if you can replace just the plugs but i very much doubt it.....the sender unit is an integral part of the fuel pump assembly.. (according to the HAYNES manual.. that lives in my hand lol) but im almost certain that if it was the sender unit you still wouldnt get anything from it by bypassing it ..obviously the fuel pump is working when bypassed it whirrs (thats what i call the noise ;p) so it seems its got to be the connection plug... may i point out also that recently my own 416 would not start i had put new spark plugs.. new ignition leads ..a can of petrol but the car just wouldnt start when i tried to turn it over i also noticed the fuel pump was not making a noise when i turnt it over like it always had done.. for 2 weeks i had no car and had to rely on my feet (which by the way were not made for walking.. the were made to operate a clutch brake and accelerator and my problem turnt out to be the rotar arm .. it may just be worth a try you never know (fingers crossed)

check fuse 14 & 20 in the passenger fuse box & the fuel pump relay & main relay in the engine compartment fusebox.
If there is power both sides of f 20 then your inertia switch is faulty or you have a bad earth at the pump. Be aware that you will only have a feed for a few seconds when turning the ign. on, this is to prime the system. You then have to crank the engine to get a feed.
