sorry for the confusion
Can anyone assist. I have just bough a N reg Rover 214 i. (Petrol) high mileage from someone I know. He has used it daily without any significant problems. I noticed the radiator was leaking and got a second hand one. My son and I fitted it. This is when problems started. @@ Expansion chamber - Water coming back up through it from engine block. @@ HEATER TEMPERATURE - Not reaching correct temp inside of vehicle# BLEEDING THE SYSTEM I visited a local garage mechanic there had a good knowledge on Rover engines. he informed me that when fitting a replacement radiator it was problem to difficulities to then bleed the system. Can anyone advise how to bleed the system correctly please. The mechanic said that I would probably find a bleed nipple or screw on perhaps a hose. I have had a close look and cannot find anything like this. Has anyone experienced this sort of problem before if so can you advise how I correctly bleed the system down and have the coolant circulating correctly. The mechanic went on to say that the Rovers are notorious for cylinder head problems, if the engine is run without any water. I hope this is not the case. Even though the mileage is high the engine appears to be ok. HIGH FUEL CONSUMPTION - ENGINE TICKING OVER TOO HIGH Other problem I have is that the car seems to be using a lot of fuel. The rev counter even after the engine has been running for a while is at about 1100 rpms. (It was showing this even before radiator was fitted) but mpg seems to have gone down drastically. Can anyone advise regarding this. I am told there are sensors in the Carb. Thanks @@ Heater - Not blowing hot enough temperature.
Yes will try that when weather gets a bit drier and bit less windy. My son is going to help me. for now heater appears a little warmer. I spoke to a mechanic who said it was likely to be an 'air lock' and heater matrix. He knew what he was talking about because he said that the engine had been designed to HEAT UP QUICKLY. On another thread of one of the discussions, I noticed it said to take a ball bearing out of pipe from the one leading from expansion chamber to manifold. Having said that another member said dont take ball bearing out, he more or less backed up what mechanic had said that ball bearing was there to increase heat into vehicle and was one way flow, by taking ball bearing out this would allow two way flow, which would be counter productive. Before I put replacement radiator on noticed there was what appeared to be 'back pressure' in expansion chamber resulting in loss of water, this has continued even with replacement radiator, was worried re cylinder head gasket, but engine seems to be running okay. Will continue with your suggestion and see how I get on. Thanks again Tony
I think you will find that all engines are designed to reach optimum operating temperature to ensure engine durability and economy.
First time I have driven a Rover, model I have is the 416, I am impressed with it even with the cooling problems I have had. Radiator /cirulation problems seems to have settled down. I have got to say I am impressed with the handling and overall performance of vehicle, and for what I paid for it I have got a bargain. I was going to sell it now I have my other car back on the road but I am thinking of keeping hold if it because I like the vehicle. Was thinking in the future of getting a diesel model, any comments /suggestions re this and maybe what model to buy or steer clear of. Thanks for previous advice Tony

Have a 95 416 sli auto, went to start it yesterday, it fired then cut out and wouldn't start. I found the thread and have disconnected the battery and cleaned the earths. Checked the fuel was getting to the injector and spark present on first plug. I managed to get it started today via a jump as I had ran down the battery. It kept just about satring then not, eventually I got it running. With a smell of petrol. However it now has a strange idle problem will sit and rev itself from about 1000 to 1500 as if you were putting you foot down on the accelerator and letting it go immeadiately. I dont have a haynes or anything for the car, I would be grateful for any advice suggestions, whether sensor or something. If you make a suggestion I would also be grateful if you could tell me where to find it on the engine as I don't know the car at all. Thanks for taking the time to read it and respond ( if you can)
