Ok, sorry to hark on but it all seems ok actually, i just gave it more throttle and the car went better, i know that sounds silly and obvious but my 405 just flew with a little gas, the Rover has a smaller engine so i guess that accounts for it.

In D3 i heard the engine hit 2nd and then 3rd, all no problem, just slower than im used to.

Thanks again.

Hi i was wondering if anybody could help my R reg Rover 416 starts fine 90% of the time but occasionally i will try and start it and nothing will happen. It will start with a bump start but this is getting frustrating. I have a feeling it could be the starter motor. Any ideas?

If you are turning the key and nothing is happening, and then you turn it again and it starts fine then it does sound like your starter motor starting to go, i think it sounds like one or more of the teeth are missing and its when these are aligned up that it dont turn over the engine (it cant as there is no contact being made due to no teeth).

Could be that.

Hi all.
I've got a bit of a problem with a S reg Rover 416, hope someone can help. It'll start for a second or two on 4 cylinders, then it'll stop and won't fire up, leave it for a minute and it'll fire up for a couple of seconds again.
Even when it won't start it's got a good spark and good fuel pressure.
I've tried giving the fuel pump a permanent live but still no joy.
I took the fuel rail out the manifold but left everything connected, turned it over and it chucked fuel out for a second or two then stopped, the injectors have a live feed whether it'll fire up or not, the wiring is fine from the injector multiplug to the ECU, I've tried another ECU and it has exactly the same fault.

Any thoughts?
thanks for any help
Mark

If you tried another ecu how did you get past the immobiliser? This sounds like an immobiliser problem.
The ecu has a get started mode then a run mode when it looks for sensor readings, have you checked that the 5v feed to the sensors is good & their return to the ecu. Also earths behind the engine compartment fuse box. Fuses & main relays. Also oxygen sensor & its heater relay circuit.
If the 5v cuts out the same time as the fuel rail & connections in the loom are good then replace the ecu & immobiliser unit under the dash. Or get an eka code failing this a box of tricks to remove the immobiliser.

It does not start after reinserting the infact the only way to get it started was a bump start however having read this forum i gave bringing the clutch out as i turnt the key a try and it started fine:) Seems weird but hopefully this will continue to work as it is very rarely that it fails to start. Its only happened about 6 times in as many months. Thanks for ur response.

Ahoy ! Got a vvc Coupe R reg.
Done the head gasket, running OK before.
Will not start, poor spark, new leads, took care and replaced one by one.
Still will not start, better spark but a bit 'orangey', in my day I would have
said needed a new condensor.
When turning over sounds like poor/no compression and tries to catch on two cylinders
every now and again. Smells of petrol from exhaust.
When reassembling marked crank to put back in right position as replaced timing belt
Lined up cam wheels on marks (one red mark-exhaust and one mark only-inlet), small belt checked on marks and not removed.
However noticed that inlet half cam behind main cam wheel had some backlash (approx 20 degrees ?)is this right ? Thinking that inlet on that half cam is not closing at right time ?
Nice little goer though, drove an earlier 2 litre down from Edinburgh, great !

Hi, can anybody help me with my problem with my rover 416si? Its low mileage 75'000. Ive only had it 1yr. Its fine to start with but the last 3wks it started lurching slightly. Its now got so worse it stutters up the road. In idle the revs go up and down, so i have to keep my foot on the throttle to stop it cutting out which it has done but does start again. Recently ive had a new cooling temperture sensor, new spark plugs and leads and new filters. took it to the garage they plugged the computor in and found no fault they didnt no what the problem was but recommended the distributor cap and rotor arm might help, but its still really bad. Any ideas please Emma

Hi. It could be the rotor arm or dist cap causing the lurching, it could also be the lambda sensor which could cause erratic idle speed, unfortunately it could also be a number of other things includins a vacuum leak or blockage in the breather pipes etc.
Best find another garage to have a look at it

Thanks for your advice about my rover, i picked up a distibutor cap and rotor arm from a scrap yard for only £5. The garage quoted me £50 for them to do work. I had my father put them in for me. I now have no probs at all with it (apart from the mecanism in my window that when you open it it wont shut and i need a new back box) Just hope nothing else goes wrong with it for a while! Thanks again Emma

Hi,I have a P Reg Rover 216SLi auto with exactly the same problem,it judders whilst i am driving and loses power it is as i write on this forum in my local garage unfit for road use as i have been told my engine wiring loom has gone!
At first the garage thought it maybe the fuel filter but alas with this car its never that easy had a few problems over last couple of months and some hefty garage bills, just had new crank sensor fitted, ran ok for three weeks, and now this problem with the loom, and garage cannot get part anywhere!
If anyone on this forum knows where i can purchase the engine wiring loom for a p reg 216sli auto (1996)i would be truly grateful.

hiya mate ...........may seem a really stupid thing to say and ask but have you tried changing the rotar arm ......i has exactly the same problem and was off the road several weeks because of it during which time i had all the injection unit changed crank sensor every sensor you can think of in fact for it to be a 5 pound piece of plastic ..........even if you have changed it can i suggest you change it again as there is a dodgy batch out there at the moment and i had 2 or 3 before i finally got a decent one ............
failing that does the 416 sli wiring loom fit on the 216 ........because i have a spare one of those ........otherwise ebay is your best option.........

Any advice please.
I have a 416. Advised by dealership Head Gasket blown. Very expensive to repair. More than the car. Took the car to local garage who replaced the head gasket, cracked tested the head -ok. Replaced the thermostat, checked water pump-ok. Removed the ball bearing in the cooling system. Yet when running the engine has plenty of power and runs very smooth but the engine overheates. Is there any tricks to bleading the cooling system or could there be another problem. I read once cyl liners move. Would these be normally sealed when doing a head gasket. I thought they were the lower part of engine!!!

Normaly if the cylinders move they bed themselfs into the cylinder head which wrecks it. So it is very obvious if this has happened. Is the system over pressurising? Have you checked that the thermostat is opening or that it it is not a false reading of the gauge. Does the fan cut in & it expell the coolant pass the cap? Please describe your problem in more detail. Anyway you should take it back to the garage for them to sort as they took on the problem & you spent money with them at their advice.
