Hi. It could be an airlock behind the thermostat preventing it from opening but I would have thought it would make the car undrivable even in this weather, as Brian says, take it back to the repairer, I'm sure they will be more than happy to sort it.

Hi,
I have a rover 416 sli 96P.
I've just had the cylinder head gasket replaced and the head skimmed.
It has been difficult to start for some time(having to depress the clutch when you should not have to) have changed the plugs but it is still only a little better.Any ideas as I'm getting really frustrated with it as I keep draining the battery trying to start it??????????????????

Regards

You need to find out if it is a spark or a fuel problem.
It could be the coil, king lead from coil to cap, dis cap or rotor arm.
The spark should be bright blue & not orange. It must also be able to jump a gap of at least 12mm. To test you take the plug leads off the plugs. Insert a screwdriver in one of the plug leads & with insulated pliers hold the screwdriver near the head & have someone crank it. Look at the spark & see how far away you can get the screwdriver away from the head.
Now retest with the end of the king lead that is in the distributor. Is the spark any different. If greater than from the plug lead then replace the dis cap & most important the rotor arm. If weak out of the king lead then check for corroded connections on the coil. If all ok try another king lead, if still weak then try a coil.
If a really cracking spark then check the connections on the temperature sensor. If you can check the sensor when cold with a meter it should read around 1300 ohms & drop to 200-300 when hot. Don't disconnect a sensor with the ignition on. If you don't have a meter then replace the sensor. There are two sensors, make sure you check/change the one for the ecu & not the one for the dash gauge.
Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

hi, my experiance with my 416,after disconecting battery, and fitting new one. turning key to start all it would do is make a beeping noise, which could not be cancelled by pressing key fob. it was not the fob. what you need is the
4 diget emergency key access code. for instance if its 1221. you would close the door, turn key clockwise once(1) doorlocked. anticlockwise twice(2) door unlocked. clockwise twice(2) doorlocked and anticlockwise once(1) door unlocked, immobiliser should now be reset, and can be turned off using fob, and car should start. now the bad news. if the code is not in your book. you will have to go to rover dealer, if you can still find one. and give reg number, and vin number. then depending on age of car. they may be able to get code number for you. but there is usually a charge.. hope this helps
