Hi. If it is smelling of petrol it is unlikely to be the fuel pump, could be the crank sensor, check the distributor cap and rotor, temp sensor and main relay. It sounds like it needs proper diagnosis as there appears to be a number of issues.

Hi there
Can somebody give me some adivce please? I have a rover 214 sei 1999, had the head gasket skimmed in Nov 05, the clutch replaced two weeks ago and I have noticed that the engine sometimes revs between 1000-1700 when idle, normally from cold. When its warmed up a bit, it normally settles down to about 1000-1100. I've spent a lot of money on this car lately and really hope that its not more bad news.. any suggestions why the car initially revs high on cold start up?
Many thanks.

hope someone can advise me.... i have a 98 rover416 and have had starting problems ever since ive owned it... the engine turns over once then as it turns again it dips sounding like its a battery problem..then eventually it fires up.... once the car is warm you can turn it off then it will start first time, but once left for a while back to the same problem. ive changed the battery, new starter motor, spark plugs,ht leads, coil, and even tried another ecu but the problem still persists and is becoming very annoying... please help

Hi Richard The starting problem I had way, way back in this thread had symptoms very similar to those you describe. I had professionals, both garage and RAC, telling me I needed to replace nearly all the parts that you list. What it turned out to be was just a corroded contact where the earth return lead from the starter is bolted to the engine. A bit of emery paper was all that was needed. Although I never did discover why I could not push start the car , it has never needed it since. Mij

thanx for your reply, i will try what you suggested thats great the last thing i want to do is have to take the car to a main dealer and get stung.... if it doesnt work do you think its worth taking the car to an auto electrican to have it plugged in for a diagnostic check, to see if it shows any fault codes? thanx again Richard

My own experiences there on the Rover have not been too good. I spent a small fortune trying to get an ABS problem fixed at an auto-electrical place using their diagnostics. Kept saying there was no fault. Eventually turned out to be something that I am sure an "old fashioned" mechanic would have spotted straight away (broken reluctor rings). Having said that I watched the RAC man do an "old-fashioned" voltage check between the starter motor live and the engine block when the Rover would not start. He reckoned I needed a new motor. It was only when I repeated it later measuring directly between motor live and earth terminals (not easy to do), that I found the real problem.

Hi, I wonder if you can help me. My engine is stalling, revving, or idling erratically. It is intermittent but lately has increased and is idling erratically most days. I go to a rover dealer and having hooked the car up to all sorts of stuff whilst it was doing the fault they have decided it must be the ECU. They are very kind and have agreed to fit a new one and programme it in for free. however, I am wondering before buying a second hand ECU for £58, whether it could still be the fuel pump. Is this a possiblitly do you think. Its a Rover 420. Thank you so much, I am really in a stew about this especially as with little children, I'm terrified of the car stalling while i'm crossing a road.

Hi. It is unlikely to be the fuel pump if it is revving, did any fault codes come up when the dealer looked at it ? It could be a number of things from a bad earth (which is quite common) a sensor or the idle speed actuator. I would advise against a second hand ECu as you could be buying the same problem.

thank you. They did run all those tests and there were no error messages at all. They also manually ran over everything while the car was faulting and couldn't find anything wrong, hence suggesting the ECU. Is there anything else they could check?

Hi. The best bet is to get the Ecu tested off the car, without seeing the car it is hard to tell what the problem could be.

i have a rover 416, 1993, the car starts perfectly most the time but sometimes it turn over but wont start. u wait five mins and it starts. some 1 mentioned that it could be the automatic choke staying on after the engine is off and floading the carbretta. to fix this i was told to take the cover off it and clean it with petrol. has any 1 else heard off this.
