I wonder if anyone has any clues about my problem. I bought a 416 on an S reg about 3 months ago. The car has only done about 46k miles, and is in great nick, with full service history. It drove superbly up until about a week ago, when a very intermittent fault started occurring. What will happen is, I'll be driving along quite happily, sometimes while cruising in 4th or 5th, sometimes when slowing down from a fast run (as revs are dropping), and suddenly and for no apparent reason, the throttle will stop responding, the revs die, and the engine stops running. Generally, I will coast to the side of the road, slam on the hazards, and wait for a minute or two before restarting the engine. About half the time, it will just burst back into life as if nothing happened, and I'll be fine until the next recurrence. Recently, it's been a bit harder to restart, and will just turn over (as if it's out of fuel) not firing up, until eventually it catches. The battery is as strong as an ox, and yes, theres plenty of petrol in the car. Sometimes this will happen twice or more on a single journey, and it's almost always when the engine is warm, although it's by no means running hot. Lately at night I've noticed a bit more exhaust than usual although that might just be the colder weather. I also notice when the car's idling (at about 900rpm), that sometimes if you rest your foot gently on the accelerator pedal (not enough to rev, just to "feel" the engine), it feels a bit jittery, like it might stall. That said, it doesn't. It just makes me wonder whether the problem might be the ECU or the auto-choke having a brain-fart. I've booked it into a branch of SMC for a fault diagnostic check in about a week, but they want nearly 90 quid for the hour long process. I wonder if anyone recognizes the problem and can help me sort it before I have to spend that kind of money. Thanks for any advice you guys can offer.

Hi. It could really be any number of things, obviously the first step would be to check the Ecu for any fault codes, it could be the crank sensor but they normally show a fault on starting not while running, also the temperature sensor, just making the car run too lean.one other thing is the cat breaking up and blocking the exhaust occasionally. One of the most important things you can do before you take it in is to clean all the earth connections especially near the battery. No point paying someone else to do it for you !

Thanks for that reply.
I will get busy cleaning the earths, that's a good suggestion.
Where would I find the temperature sensor, and is there any way to know if it's working correctly without complex testing equipment ?
Assuming it's the most likely cause, and it's somehow not performing properly, is it a replace job, or is there some way to refurbish it without replacing it ?
Thanks again for your help.

Hi. The temp sensor is normally close to the top radiator hose, it is not a servicable item. It can be checked with an ohmeter and thermometer as the resistance alters with temperature. For the sake of £8.00 I would just replace it. As quoman says, they do suffer with map sensor faults, check the pipe going to the ECU isn't blocked.

Is the beeping from the alarm ? Could be your remote battery flat.

i dont supose it could be the age old problem of the main relay being held open, only thing with that is, it normally takes about 3 days to go flat

Hi. All the ones I have come across have an alarm / immobiliser. Is there a small red light at the bottom of the instrument panel ? Has the car got a remote ?

New developments on my problem.
The car decided to run perfectly for 2 days, without any recurrence of the problem.
Then, late one night (typically) about 3 miles from home, it stopped and refused point blank to restart.
The starter motor is now not even turning over the engine, and instead just makes a continuous "rat-a-tat-a-tat" noise when I engage the ignition.
Does this sound like a) immbobiliser activation, b) flattened battery, c) broken starter motor, or d) some other horrible outcome ?
Thanks again for your wisdom.

Could be a poor connection. Check that the batery term clamps are not corroded inside. Disconnect the battery & clean them with emery paper. Check the connections to the starter, both the live & earth. Also check the body earth. Brian

Hi. Hi. If it is quite a fast regular click then it sounds like a flat battery.

Yep, I think it's a flatty.
Just nipped over there with my Dad and his car to see if we could recover it. Still doing the same thing, and other electrics are sluggish (windows etc). Roped it up and towed it home. On the way, the hazard lights started flashing ultra-fast, and then died. The battery is now in my garage being soak-charged, and we shall try again to see if the car starts on Saturday.
On a side note, why is it that when you're being towed, every other driver on the road turns into an even bigger a$$hole than usual ?
People are dumb.

Yeah, the battery seemed fine before all of this stall/restart malarkey. I guess I was just chancing it taking the car out before the problem was rectified.
Proof of the pudding will be trying the car on Saturday with the battery fully charged.
One thing does worry me though. Prior to the tow, we tried using a set of jump leads. Assumedly, my dad's car was pumping out enough juice to override my flat battery. Even with this, the starter motor just kept on with the rat-a-tat-tat thing.

Hi. It depends how good the jump leads were, most sold in accessory shops are only booster cables, meaning you need to run the donor car for a while with them connected to give your battery some charge. The other thing is that your battery might be totally shot and have an internal short.
