I had a similar problem like this.
Town driving ok but soon as a got 50+ on a motorway the car would die. Stop restart ok off i go again until 50+ and it would die.
Answer; fuel pump, not enough fuel being pumped for higher speed. New pump quoted £200 - secondhand £50

I agree, sounds like the battery is shot. You may well be able to charge it but I bet it will discharde on it`s own & you will be back to square one. Take it to Halfords or the like & ask if they can do a drop charge test on it. This way you will know for sure.

hi there
i wonder if you can help me i have a p - reg 1997 rover 416si, and i am
having problems with the running , i have had the head gasket replaced and
a new water pump fitted, but i am having trouble as sometimes it wont
start and when it does the revs drop off and splutter i have repaced the
crank shaft sensor with a secondhand one and it seemed fine for a couple
off weeks and now it has started all over again, do you know any other
fault that common that it might be or recommend to me.

thanks
steve.

Hi.
It could be a number of things but here are the most common / likely.
1/
Temperature sensor, it could be giving the wrong values to the ECU so the engine is running lean.
2/
Map sensor, this is part of the ECU, you can do a primitive test byfitting and sucking on a pipe connected to the ECU, blank off the original one which goes to the engine.
3/
Poor earth connection. Check the body earth by the battery, this can give no end of problems if there is corrosion and resistance.

Just in case anyone's following the story ..

We gave the battery a good solid 30 hours of soak charging, and then this morning I reattached it to the car. (This was the car that refused to start, and eventually ran out the battery trying, having stalled in the middle of nowhere leaving me to walk home).

The first thing that happened was that the alarm went off when I opened the door (pretty normal I guess). I pressed the "open" button on the fob about 3 or 4 times from inside the car, and it stopped. Key in .. turn on .. car fired up first time, and hummed along as if nothing had ever happened.

I'm leaning more and more towards thinking this is an immobiliser problem. QUOMAN, you will probably be getting some business from me in the very near future. However, it's booked for the full system check at SMC tomorrow morning, so I'll let them run that first and see what else it might turn up.

As you have had the battery off the ecu will have cleared any faults in its memory. It may have been in get you home mode which has now cleared also. I have found that leaving the ecu disconnected for a period has cleared a poor running problem.

I was just pointing out that it would clear the "get you home mode". You can repair all the faults & still have a car where it is running rich & the throttle won't idle. & You think *#c% this car whats wrong with it. I can`t find a fault.
Clear the ecu & it runs fine.
If the fault is tempremental then it is soon back & is best to have the ecu fault read by someone like yourself. Then it can be sorted for good, or at least until the next fault!
Many people want to do as much as they can before sending their car to a workshop these days due the excessive costs of running & maintaining. I have fallen foul of the diagnostic technician in the past who charged me £250 to sort my MG Montego. I would have scrapped the car if I thought I was going to get a bill like that. & of course the next day it was back to poor running.

Well, the garage called, and after running the complete diagnostic test, they reckon they've isolated the fault.

Apparently they left the car running, and it happened to stall out while the diagnostic rig was attached, which I guess helped.

It's the fuel pump relay. It cuts out when it gets to a certain temperature. That more or less fits with all the incidences where the engine died.

They've quoted £29 for the relay, plus an hour of labour to fit it and set it up, and they think that will solve the problem completely.

So assuming they're right, I'm pretty damn happy.

Hi
I have an L reg Rover 416 GSi Automatic. A couple of months ago it started revving to 5000 sometimes 6000 before it would go up the first gear, (all other gears seem ok) its just the first initial gear change from standstill. The coolant level is constantly dropping, in the last two weeks three hoses have split, one of them happened the day after I had the radiator replaced. The fan attached to the radiator has not come on since the rad was renewed and my in car heaters are not getting warm.
I would really appreciate any help or advice as I just can't seem to get a straight answer from the mechanics I use... Thanx..It has a honda engine if that makes any difference

Hi. Iy sounds like there is too much pressure building up, this could be due to overheating or the head gasket. Either way you need the coolant tank cap checked / replaced.

Your a star, Thanx 4 the advice I got a new tank cap 2day the heaters in the car are getting hot now, I'm still quite concerned about the radiator fan even after a long drive it has not come on. Could it be the wiring? I have checked fuses. thanx again

Hi. Buy yourself a new temperature sensor, they often play up, saying that at this time of the year radiator fans don't cut in that often.

Hi, I have a Rover 416i (T Red) I had the head gasket / head replaced 4 months ago and the cluth replaced about 10 months ago. However the car now is starts fine but when it is running the revs stick at 2500rpm then i have to either tap on the accelerater to make it go down or turn the car off then back on again what could be the problem?

Also when i put it into gear it sounds like a space ship / aeroplane taking off? could it be my gearbox oil? however when i put the clutch down it doesn't make any noise so it can't be the clucth.

Matt,

Hi. The primary shaft bearing is oftem a problem on the Rovers, you could try an additive otherwise it may need stripping down.
First thing is to check that there is oil in the gearbox.
Regarding the idle speed, it could be the cable sticking or not adjusted correctly or it could be the idle control actuator.
