While I'm watching this thread with great interest, I am getting increasingly worried about the terrible spelling that is appearing on it.

Eney = any
Trane = train

Come on, this is basic stuff.

I did sort of suggest a quad bike rear end some time ago, the jobs already been designed right.

Andrew,

I feel it is commendable to keep the back seat. That is what I am attmpting to do. Two ways to do this come to mind.

The first is to face the engine backwards in the car (exhaust manifold towards the rear bumper and build a chain drive diff that will reverse the output direction ie run the outside of the chain on the outside the next sprocket and then to an idler sprocket. The output is connected to your axles and then to an idler sprocket. The obvious benefit is one chain and better (imo) orientation of exhaust and controlls.

The next is to orient the engine forward, like on the motorcycle, and run the output back to a shaft and then forward to custom stub axles. Three chains on this set up but the engine is oriented correctly. The drawback, we'll see if all the chains stay on as the suspension moves.

I am doing the latter as it seemed to fit the 500 better.

Good luck,

Mike

Just wondering if your 126 passed the MOT. it looks really good too bad the website won't let me see any of the pictures. hope it did pass cos im building a similar thing using a fiat 500 and an aprilia v twin 1000. its quite a long engine so it'll have to be mounted next to me. also sprocket is on the left hand side so im goin to have to use left hand drive. bit of an ass but should make overtaking interesting.

Hi guys, sorry to barge in. Been following this one closely as i am a big Fiat 500 fan and have been contimplating a similar project for a while now.

Just wondered how you were getting on Mike, i am especially interested in whether you have set up you chain drive as i have a hunch that you may have issues around keeping the chain mounted with this configuration.

Anyway, all the best...look forward to hearing more on this project.

Logan,

Welcome.

I am coming along good. Last couple of days involved cutting and welding rims. Good news, 175/50 - 13's will fit back spacing seicento wheel centers 12 mm out. The tires look massive on a 500. Shifter is hooked to the origional 500 unit, clutch and accelerator to the origional 500 pedals, Injection pump and regulator in the 500 fuel tank. Injection harness is in the mockup stage, but, fully functional.

Now for the chain drive. I do not know for certain it will work. The axles do cause the sprockets to twist. I am optomistic. Microsprints (race cars) seem to be able to live with this twisting by adding disks on either side of the sprocket o keep it from derailling. I have set the sprockets in the chain and have observed what I think is an ample amount of twist before it binds. The amount of twisting is controllable by controlling movement of the suspension. If I need more movement I may be able to shave the sprocket.

Thank you for your thoughts,

Sounds like your well on the way. I sincerely wish you luck with what is an extremely interesting project.

I think the way u are setting up is by far the best way to go layout wise etc and the more i think about it, i think you should get away with the chain set up especially if you go for stiffer shocks and shorter springs.

Please please keep us posted - cant wait to see the final result.

Cheers.

More pics are posted.

The engine is back in, sprockets are keyed in place, some fresh paint is sprayed and the car will be ready to roll next week.

This weeks project is to buy a golf cart starter that will pull double duty as a starter (reverse motor) and a generator. It will be belt driven off the jack shaft.

Well, First runs have been completed. Only one wheel (175-50-13)was hooked up and it would spin under moderate acceleration. I have ordered 2 torque limiters both at a good price off ebay for the differential. (it's good to have a spare) The exhaust is too loud for the neighbors (just right for me) so it won't be long until the polizia show up on behalf of the neighbors. A permanent solution is on order, a dual tip aftermarket merged exhaust with a center feed VW Bug muffler. The reverse is coming along. Pics are posted: http://et1eck.tripod.com/gsxr_fiat_500/

I am at the very begining of my project, I have a 92 Bis and a fireblade,. Could anyone tell me what they feel to be the easiest way of going about it. i was going to have Engine in back at 90 with prop straight off the output shaft going to a front disovery diff, or engine above diff with chain and sprokets. Any advice will be greatfully accepted from you vetran's

I have built mine by turning the engine through 90 degrees but it makes the package a bit long, I actually wanted the engine in the passenger seat, to try to give the best weight balance once I was in the car, it actually works quite well but half kills you through the noise....

I f your going to use the original swing arms like I have it will become complicated to get it to fit, I suggest you start by thinking of binning these.

If I was to start again, and I may I would sit the engine above a drive shaft and use a sealed chain drive diff. I think they use the old ford atlas and weld up all the holes filling it with grease.

good luck....
