I am wondering whether this counts as some sort of record as the longest forum thread ever! Obviously there is a lot of us about with Talbots who have a few problems from time to time.

Been for a test drive now and my van still misfires. Had to go over to Chepstow so took the van. On way back on a long straight flat stretch of motorway, got up into fifth, and floored it. Misfire came in after a while, at the heady heights of 65mph! then keeping it floored it fell into a pattern, misfire for a few during which time speed would fall down, then it would pick up run properly and speed would pick up, then back to misfire and it was a consistent pattern. Until we ran out of flat road! This probably tells me something, but at the moment, I can't think what it is?

I have a can of Powerboost Aerosol on order. In case it helps, one more thing to try.

Thanks for the reply CJ, not sure why resistive plugs were fitted, not getting any interference on the radio with the proper plugs fitted.

Happy Camping.

Rob.

Rob, re missfire when the missfire occures does the engine sound as though it is running on 3 cyllinders? or that all cyllinders are losing power as though running out of fuel? If the former one would check HT leads, dist cap, coil top for cracks /tracking in addition on the Talbot it is so easy to fit the plug tops incorrectly pushing the lead between the metal tube which the plug sits in and the plug terminal however this causes missing mainly under hard accelleration .
Fuel starvation would cause the symptems you describe, check the filter within the fuel pump, fuel line to the tank then to the carb the famous T piece, needle valve in the float chamber also remove the valve and check for trapped debris, float level should be checked as should any in line fuel filter . When the pipes filters etc are clear check the output of the fuel pump by removing the feed pipe from the carburetter insert into a petrol proof clear container which will hold at least 1 litre remove coil LT lead so as the engine wont start or spark, crank the engine and check the flow it should be a continuous stream of sufficient volume to fully load the fuel pipe. Great care is needed with petrol in loose containers and flowing from pipes, so cold engine fire extinguisher ready and maybe extend the fuel line away from the engine bay with some steel tube of the correct diameter. When these checks are carried out post the result and we can go from there, mystery problems ie those which still exist after all checks renewals and diagnosis have taken place fall into 2 categories 1 Checking proceedure incorrect and or more than one (maybe slight which alone would not cause a problem) fault. Forgot to mention clear main jet and passages to the jet.I have not read your past posts so forgive me if I am reiterating. Kind regards Dr. Bob

After a number of reliability problems with starting, stalling and backfiring I had a look last night.
Once I got it started, which took a while and a lot of patience, I left it ticking over for a while until it was well heated up.
Then carefully drove it about 2 miles for fuel (backroads, to save any embarrassing breakdowns round the one-way system).
Got there and filled it up to the brim.
£60 lighter, jumped in, started no problem (1st turn of the key).
Took it out with a bit less caution for about 10 miles giving it some where the roads allowed with no problems whatsoever.

I'll keep it out on short journeys, hopefully every day or at least every other day for about the next week, then I'm off on a longer venture all being well.

Hopefully, it's just been a case of sitting too long on a nearly empty tank or just some *!#%!@ fuel.

My intention is to keep it as full as practical to see if that solves the problem.

I'll keep you posted...

Hi DrBob, ta for your response.

So far,
New HT Leads, inline filter, Plugs and Air filter.
Fuel pump internal filter cleaned. Air intake checked and the cold start flap operation checked. Timing adjusted, idle speed checked.
Battery connections cleaned.

Haven't taken carb off yet, but will do this weekend. Only reason I haven't yet is because of the need to partially drain coolant system.

I will also being doing an oil change, as it needs doing.

I'll let you know what effect it has!

Cheers

Rob.

Hi Robbie

Are you sure stripping your carburettor is a wise idea,in the hope that will be the cure, Do you have a new gasket set to hand, would you not let a mobile tuner have a go first & let the computer pinpoint the problem or at least narrow it down?

Doc,
what you say is no doubt eminently sensible, but not sure I can stop fiddling! I'll give it some thought though before rushing into the next part of my probably flawed plan. Good excuse for a beer.
Cheers!

Hi yes the best battery is a Varta,i think thats what there called, they make batterys for a particular vehicle. i.e they take each vehicle specs into account when designing it.they are a little more expensive but well worth it,buying a cheap battery for a camper is a false economy.hope this helps, but i would not have any other

Hi Alex,
If you go to Halfords and buy a calcium battery you will get a warranty with it for four years, they will also fit it for you if you require. The benefits of buying from halfords is that they cover the whole country and are open seven days a week if you have a problem. The benefits of calcium batteries are:- A greater cold start current (cca)
More tolerant of extremes of temperature
more tolerant of abuse i.e failing alternators etc
Halfords batteries are manufactured by Yuasa in the UK and are original equipment suppliers to some large car manufacturers, so there quality is not in doubt.

Hope this helps.

paloma heater firing up on turning on the pump. Could the feed and return pipes for the water flow be connected the wrong way around?
