Fitting new leaf springs.

Hi

We decided to get one of those 'nice men' with the proper equipment fit the new springs.

Just thought I'd let you know that after a bit of driving about (couple of mechanics sucking in breath and looking doubtful, etc), we found a garage who fitted the springs, changed the 2 brake pipes, exhaust rubbers, and two bulbs, which the motor had also failed its mot on.

All for £200, best money I've ever spent.

Will be taking it for its mot next week.

I got the 5 leaf springs from Rossendale Road Springs, with all the u bolts & bushes for £367 + carraige. Don't know if that was the best deal, but I had been quoted £250 each (for the springs only) just last year from another company.

I drove it to the storage area this morning, and am now a happy bunny.

Actually, that should have been £367 including carriage.

The first thing is to check out the RCD system. On my van the Mains system failed because a tiny grub screw had shaken loose preventing proper earthing between the main RCD and the earthing bar in the consumer unit. Very easy to fix. I suggest you get a qualified electrician to check your mains system out!

You know this thread has gone over & over the same problems many times , I was talking to a good friend about starting a whole new section in his web site which would have a search section where common faults could be answered along with where to obtain parts to complete the repair or get the repair's carried out.
Like everything in this world it costs money , so before we go off spending cash I thought it would be a good idea to put some research in, so anyone who reads this thread & would like a dedicated area then post a reply.
Also we were thinking of starting a owners club, give me your thoughts , it takes us owners to make things happen.

All the best
Rich

Hi Rich,
I think a dedicated site is a great idea and would love a Talbot Express owners club --- (something I searched for but never found).

Peter.

Very good idea to have an owners club as there are so many of these campers still on the roads. (can't understand why as the van version rotted away years ago!) Keep us posted when & where.
Cheers

Hi again Rich.
A dedicated site for talbots would be great. As stated, finding info and parts for these vans is getting harder. There is a club for the Autosleepers version of the vans, but this covers all models, not just Talbots.
This site is the best at the moment but is not very user friendly. When you click on "reply to this message" you are not replying to that particular message, your reply just goes out as a serial message and appears after the last posted message.
Therefore it is important to address whoever you are replying to by their user name.
Anyway, good luck with your web site/club project, and many thanks for your help in the past.
Due to other commitments we have not been able to use our van (Autosleepers Rambler) much this season yet, but hope to do so soon.

Best regards.
John

Thats the hard part having replies go direct to the person asking the question.
The Autosleepers owners club I will look up , I feel the site needs to be covering the base vehicle, with then having owners of each conversion being able to help each other, out with wiring & inside unit problems.
The main reason motorhome conversions of this Van rot out slower is due to less use, but trust me they do rot.
Lets make the replies to a dedicated web site & Club a little easier , as we could end up with pages of replies here , email me at [Log in to view email] to let me know your thoughts & idear's

Hello everyone!

I am a month away from embarking on a two month tour of Europe in my G reg Talbot 1300 P Pilote. There are a couple of things I have left a bit late and was wondering if anyone could help me out. Basically, i need to know if standard headlamp reflectors will work on the van or if there is a more specific type. Also im in need of a set of replacement bulbs.

Any help or advice you could give me would be fantastic,

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom, RE.. Headlights, the bulbs fitted to your Pilote are a common type and can be purchased from Halfords obtain the upgraded wattage type which give a much better light. Don't touch the glass when fitting them! The same company will have stick on lens correctors for driving on the right, ask one of the helpful (te he) staff if you can find one, which type is best for your van, Enjoy your trip regards, Alan

talbot express motorhome parts.

Hi, just got into this motorhome ownership thingy, and spent 3 months looking at many different vans and models and ended up with a 1986 talbot autosleeper 2.0litre manual. Couldnt test the equipment when i looked at it as there was no gas bottle and water tank was empty, but the owner( a second hand car dealer) promised me that it all worked and the van was a perfect runner.
Yep, you guessed it!! he was a cowboy! so far ive found that the fridge is cream crackered, the hot water boiler has a blown thermocoupler, the waste and fresh water tanks leak, and worst thing of all, which we didnt find out till after two weeks because we we were tidying it up, is that when you put fuel in the filler, it leaks like a sieve all over the floor!! the rubber pipes are all perished.
Now ive had a good chance to look it over on a lift, it seems that all the rubbers are perished under the van, so will need replacing. I cannot seem to get another fuel filler connection pipe anywhere, so does anyone know of any for sale?
Other than that, the van drives well, its done 59,000 miles and engine and box is nice and smooth and tight. its nice and roomy inside and well fitted out, its just a shame that we were not told the truth because then at least we could have negotiated and still probably bought it.
Any ideas or advice greatly appreciated.

The big curved rubber pipe which connects onto the tank from the metal filler pipe is available from Delfin for £10

Laurie ,
Well if I were you & you should do this ! , go back to the dealers , point out that under UK trade laws the vehicle has to be roadworthy, with a motorhome that includes a gas safety check , it would include the petrol tank rubbers.
Most important is under UK law , a item which is brought has to be fit for purpose , & your van comes well outside that, other wise its going to cost you a fiar bit to put right.
The thermocoupler get from charles & son Poole , they will have a fridge as well , I would ring Derek at delphin for the tanks parts as both are in dorset plan a weekend away. , but both will post out parts.

Regards

Rich

i agree with R and M ,I would not settle for that.I know all about buying and selling laws as it used to be my job.1st you visit the dealer and be nice but firm, ask him to put the jobs right within a reasonable time,if he refuses point out that it is not fit for purpose, even if it was just a tap not working he would have to fix it. its up to you how far you are prepared to take it but you will win in the end,i know what i would do if it were me. in fact i have on a few occations.
