Suntrekker,

My Flying Saucer stem was broken over five years ago. Still up there, working fine thanks to a couple of turns of duck tape. Didn't think of gluing it before taping. That would have been even better and I will glue and tape if ever the current repair breaks down.

Its not Hard to change at all, support the engine on a decent trolley jack and take the tension off the bush. The mounts can be bought either from Delphin Design OR Mike Chubb.

REF Jacking the engine:

Joker....Not sure to whom this post was directed (it would be helpful to put that in the reply header) but for the benefit of the OP it is NOT acceptable to put a jack under these engines due to the weakness of the sump. The gearbox yes, so one can support it this way for the LH and Rear Mounts, but for the RH mount you'll need either a hoist or an engine support bar to take the weight.

Also Delphin and No1Gear are v.expensive for engine mounts. Many are still available through Motor factors (worth phoning a few) at a fraction of the cost. I believe was detailed in an earlier post somewhere on the forum, or can be imported from Germany still at a reduced cost.

Hello
I'm new to this forum & a recent Talbot Express 1992(Autotrail Mohawk) owner.
I placed a first post a few days ago but have had no response, am I putting my question in the right section and doing this right?
The wiring in our vehicle had been fairly butchered & we've been trying to put it to rights but haven't got a wiring diagram. The Russek handbook has them, but the illustrations are very small & the wire colours aren't listed on the diesel diagram which is what's needed.
Can anyone help out here or tell me where we can get a decent wiring diagram...(or tell me if I'm asking this question in the wrong place !)
Thanks

To the Talbot Express 1992(Autotrail Mohawk) requiring wiring information:-
I have the original Elddis Autoquest book for my Talbot Express motor caravan. The wiring diagram is not in colour. I imagine it supposes the following criteria:
1. You are a qualified auto electrician and you will already know the appropriate colour coding for the various cables on the vehicle.
2. All of the original wiring as originally supplied is still in use.

I suspect that neither of these conditions are true in this case. Unless you have a good knowledge of auto electrical principles, voltmeter and other testing tools I fear you face an uphill struggle.
I had similar wiring problems that resulted in continous flat batteries requiring in their eventual replacement. I had already gone to a "highly recommended" auto electrician whose competence ran out half way through the job! However I eventually found another guy who quickly fixed the problem. Unfortunately hourly rates may not be cheap. Ask any classic car restorer if they know of an auto electrician who can loom up a vehicle from scratch. Of course you do not need to start from scratch, but you need this kind of competency. You may be lucky enough to find a semi retired apprenticed guy who can work on your van for cash (no big overheads, no VAT).
Good luck, Ted.

Thanks "Spare Me" for your advice on this forum about not using a jack under the engine sump whilst changing the rubber engine / gearbox mounts. I'm hoping my friendly mechanic will do this job for me soon and I'll pass your guidance on.
Incidentally, I had the Talbot Express petrol engine exhaust manifiold gaskets replaced recently, as one was blowing. I read here that this is usually associated with perished engine mounts causing excessive engine movement and thus tugging upon the exhaust system causing manifold problems. I had the engine/ gearbox mounts checked, and yes they are perished and require replacement.
The supply of these older motor caravan parts must be a very lucrative business!
Best regards, Ted.

Thanks for taking time to reply Ted.
The wiring we're working on is purely for the Talbot Express & nothing to do with the living area electrics.
Actually we are making progress now and do have the necessary tools & equpment & a fair bit of experience & knowledge although most of the vehicles worked on have been much older eg.1966 Landrover, early Morris Travellers & 70's VW camper plus a few motorbikes.
All we really wanted was a wiring diagram for the 2.5 diesel Talbot express van that actually had the colours marked as they do for the petrol version, but that was proving the problem..not being able to find one, I'm sure there must have been such a thing.
As I said we've already managed to correct a lot of the bodged changes ,
it would just have been nice to have the correct diagram details to refer to when working with a vehicle unfamiliar to us.
Thanks again for your reply
Linda

more of my rear light saga, Nearly crippled my back trying to contort at this light cluster ! we've managed to remove a shelf to get more access to the light cluster, we can see that nothing unclips to get at the bulbs but we can see two screws at the top but none at the bottom, the wife has managed to slacken one but can't get a socket on the other as yet, we need to know if these two screws hold on the exterior red plastic cluster & that it is supposed to come off & give access to the bulbs ? & presumably because there are no screws at the bottom it hooks on in some way ?

Usher,

Please see the attached scan of Page 38 of the owner's handbook which shows your rear light cluster and how to remove the bulb holders (a single cross-head screw). The J5 parts system also shows the Bulb holders as seperate to the lens unit for this type of rear lamp.

I assume the 2 nuts you have identified near the top are for removing the entire cluster from the vehicle.

Best wishes, Steve

Thanks Steve, at last you gave the answer we were looking for!

we took that screw out earlier, lol & tried pulling the black plastic but didn't realise that it was only the narrow strip down the middle that came free with a bit of gentle persuasion & not the whole lot, I blame the missus because I can't get a closer look & she had to do it!

Hello,

I have an autosleeper Ramble GL. Looking to re-carpet the van. Just wondering if anyone has attempted this and if you have any top tips - like how do you get the carpet to bend around/over the front internal wheel arches. Also any good sources for the right type of carpet.

Cheers

Kristofa

Hi All,

I've just bought a Talbot Express 1000 P (1971cc) First Reg 1991.

The gearbox was replaced not too long ago, but I find it really clunky and sometimes really difficult to get into 1st and R sometime requiring me to release and reapply the clutch and have another go. Is this a common issue which I need to preserver with or should I get it looked at?

Also, in terms of spare parts, I believe that the Talbot is a re-badged Peugeot. Is this true? If so what is the equivalent Peugeot model (or any other make)

Finally I have a general question from a novice motor home owner. I'm planning to do a trip to France, Italy, Spain, Morocco and Portugal. Are the gas bottles the same? Is there any issue in filling them up? Do you fill them up at petrol stations or do you need to go to a specialist? I'm going to be travelling off season Oct-Feb will this cause extra problems?

Many Thanks,
Dazza

Dazza,

The trouble you have selecting gears will be down to the linkage, it's a system of rods & cables in order to suit r/hand drive vehicles.
The original overseas spec was a column change & L/hand drive.

It can be vastly improved by adjustments & also upgraded parts are available

Dazza,
Talbot Express is a Peugeot J5, a Citroen C25 and a Fiat Ducato Mk 1. The only Bottled gas that is 'Europe -Wide' is Camping Gaz, to refill gas bottles you need a 'refillable system' in the first place, 'Gaslow' do a system advertised in most motorcaravan mags. Otherwise Bottled Gas tends to be a 'one country, one gas supplier' NOT an ideal situation,
a Fixed gas tank is the best answer for multi-Country touring. Hope that helps. Ray

Dazza,

Ref Gearbox: These sort of questons come up a lot, usually linkage related, sometimes engine mounts and/or oil level/quality, although it is unusual to find gears on opposite ends of the gate difficult. You may find some of the Gearbox info here helpful: http://www.jktowers.fsnet.co.uk/motorhome

Best wishes, Steve
