No worries, apology not necessary this thread goes back to 2005 with 3500+ posts, so some subjects will get repeated as new members join. And short of trawling through EVERY post ( which I have done - should get out more really ) to learn about the TE it is often quicker to ask the question again.

As you have probably gathered there are quite a few people with vast knowledge of the TE on here, SteveJ, Mr Dutch, drbob and awt to name just a few. Personally their advice has been invaluable to me, together with my own experiences it all adds up to a wealth of experience and knowledge, add the excellent jktowers web site to the mix and the Talbot Express could run forever. LOL

George

Could anyone recommend a good and reasonably priced mechanic in London - I live in East London.

Many Thanks,

Hi dazza

If you can get to lewisham my garage is superb. They do all the maintenance on my fleet of minibuses and have done all the work on my 1990 TE highwayman

They're called hawstead garage in SE6 and their number is 02086906363

If you mention Dave from lewisham community transport they'll treat you well!

Dave

Hi George Well i dont know about forever but a good few more years would be nice. Hell the damn things could become heirlooms. You're right the bredth of knowledge is quite staggering. And the way in which it is shared makes me think i may have dropped kinda lucky with the old TE. Lets see if i can test the old lady a bit. As, I believe, Autohomes no longer exists, does anyone know if it's possible to get a replacement for the roof hatch? (its the one at the back with the small extractor fan). Also, i'm experiencing a small problem whilst running on petrol. When i brake under load ,at a junction for example, it cuts out. Now i've read a response by Rich (R&M) and i'll certainly try your suggestion Rich, but would i be barking up the wrong tree in thinking it might have something to do with the idle cut off valve. (stevej's recent response to D Hallows problems) It seems to be running fine at all other times if a little fast on idle speed. And when revved stationary it runs on fine. Many thanks. Who did the motorhome conversion? Things like roof vents tend to be made by third party manufactureres and bought in by the motorhome convertors. Try the following links for motorhome/caravan spares.

Hi Phil,
Rooflights tend to come in standard sizes. Measure it up and there is an excellent chance you'll get a replacement at any half-decent caravan/camping spares shop for around £40-£50 - maybe less!

D

Hi Phil & to Mr D
Hope you are well.
I let a friend borrow for the 3rd time my camper to go to the V festival, every time it has come back with a couple of things broken which I could fix, however this time he had driven off with one skylite open and probably left it somewhere on the M5.
I got a complete (£15) unit 280mm from http://www.caravanbreakers.net tel 01495 792700 they are in Bleanavon Gwent and it is a huge warehouse with everything you could ever need.

Wyn

Hi. Mr Dutch and Wyn. Some time ago i tried a motorhome and caravan dealership near us but the nearest size they could offer me still meant cutting into the limited space available to fit it, and while i'm not averse to tackling something like this as it is only the opener and part of the hinge that is damaged and still functions but does'nt let any water in i think i'd rather bide my time until the right one is found. Which leads me nicely to wyns suggestion because there's something about the size you refer to that rings a bell (its been a while since i took the measurement). So hopefully i'll be allowed time this weekend to check on that and then chase it up. If i get any joy i'll post and once again many thanks for your time. Regards Phil TGO

White28 Is it the joint between the exhaust manifold and the head which is leaking? if so the only botch which may keep you going would be to find the exact spot where the leak occours and apply gun gum though it is difficult to get it in the right place maybe a shop with a lift would have a go.
Incidentally does anyone know if Mr. Joker is the same chap who tought social skills at my old school in Yorkshire? He has the same manner which made one long to be in his company. Regards, Alan

Hi White28, Has the stud fallen out or broken off ? should it have fallen out one could replace it quite easily If broken press gun gum tightly around the blowing area and then slowly warm the engine (ticking over), you have a small amount of time to press home the paste as the engine warms and before it gets too hot, applied neatly it can last a while. Use nitrile gloves and a little water to apply smoothly .Good luck, Alan

To White28,

In my humble opinion trying to gum up the missing exhaust manifold stud hole space is destined to not last more than a few miles before it starts blowing again. I know because I have already tried it. As I learned on this forum. Leaking manifold problems are are often the result of perished rubber engine mounts, resulting in too much movement of the transverse engine unit. This "tugging" at the exhaust system results in failure of the exhaust manifold studs follwed by the gaskets (there are four). I think you will need to remove the exhaust manifold completely. Corroded studs may need to be extracted and replaced. The job could require up to 8 hours of labour in the very worst scenario. In some cases the manifolds have been known to warp under heat following severe "tugging" conditions. The manifold faces would need to be machine skimmed to align the manifold apertures for a good gasket sealing. New manifolds are very hard to find.
The replacement rubber engine mounts are available from Citroen/ Peugeot dealers, but expect to pay over £100 for the "doughnut" gearbox mount.
I am sorry that my advice is probably not what you wished to hear, but it is good advice built on own experience.
Good luck, Ted.

Ted & White28

I concur with your comments re the exhaust Ted, but the gearbox rear engine mount is available for considerably less than the price you state.

Avidale Ltd of Clacton do them for around £30 incl p&p, ask for Sonny. Also refer to the 'jktowers' website where they have much info on the engine mounts, types and availabilty.

Regards
George
