Is there also an earthing block behind the fuse box? ie inside cab on LHS on a RHD model? J
Does a more boring pass time exist than filling in the forms on line or on the phone? Regards Alan
Can anyone help with the Autosleepers Talisman onboard battery charger. Mine is the original Labcraft BC.125.A unit below the cocktail cabinet with the Autosleepers control panel above it. It is long obsolete and 'Googling' it produces no info. Regards GH
Nice to hear from you again and thanks for your response. The leisure battery is the sealed type so I cannot access individual cells to check for gassing under load. It is interesting that you think onboard chargers kill the battery if left connected for long periods. I have read as much as I can about leisure battery charging with manufacturers onboard chargers, and the general opinion seems to be that onboard chargers do not put sufficient charge into LB's in the first place, so as not to 'blow' appliances using them. That is not said as an argument against your opinion, it is just my understanding from what I have researched. I do have a CTEK 7000 intelligent charger which I use for the battery off the van. The Autosleepers Talisman does not have a Zig type unit but a control panel connected to appliances like the fridge and water pump and also the separate Labcraft battery charger. Which is why I asked if anyone had replaced the charger unit. I will check the 2 fuse holders near the battery and replace the relay in case it has fused open (or is it shut), also any other earths that I can find. Regards
I too have a 1988 Talisman II with a labcraft charger, I have a copy of a 1991 Wiring diagram, from autosleeper, but it shows a Zig unit which mine(ours) doesn't have. I have a Leisure battery which is now 4 years old, and I always leave the mains connected to the van, charging the battery and a small oil filled radiator on, to stop the damp and the valliant water heater from freezing up. My van didn't originally have a second battery, I had to wire it in and fit a split charge relay to charge the battery 'on the move'. I also wired in a switch which links the Habitation and vehicle batteries, so that when on Mains both batteries get charged up. The old Labcraft has never caused me any problems and until it does I have no plans to upgrade It. Perhaps I have just been lucky ? Ray PS The 4 LED's on the panel are ; top Red Connected to mains
Ray, thanks for the info which is useful to compare with my setup. I too have the '91 wiring diagram from Autosleepers, which is the same as the one on jktowers site. But, as you say it is not the same as our earlier vans. It may be that the leisure battery was an optional extra on our versions, hence you not having one! My leisure battery has worked OK until this last week, when as I said it appeared flat after being on EHU for most of the time. Thanks again and Regards GH
:)
Could you tell me please, do you have the AS Control Panel above the cocktail cabinet and the Zig unit in the cupboard underneath, or are the Control Panel functions built into the Zig? Regards Adverts Currently On Preloved - Place an ad here for free
I have also looked at insurance recently and considered SAGA, however they will not cover you for travelling to and from work in your motorhome. I do this only very rarely if the car is out of action but they were adamant that if I used it to commute to work they would not provide cover. I have ended up with the Caravan Club. Not the cheapest but seems a good package. My recovery ( European) is with SAGA who will in their literature say they will not cover vehicles over 15 years old but if you are already with them are prepared to extend cover up to ( i think!) 20 years so long as you dont allow the cover to lapse at all. i.e sign up for direct debit payments. Hope this helps BK.
In reply to your questions regarding my 1991 model talisman: HTH, SandS
Thanks for the info, the layout seems to be the same as in my older van but obviously using an AS badged Control Panel and the Labcraft charger, as opposed to the updated items used for your year of manufacture. I suspect the Labcraft unit may be faulty, I will remove it and have it checked. May be as well to look round for a DCU 3 replacement which seem to be more readily available than the Labcraft original. Thanks again and Regards GH
I too think that your charger may have 'had it'. that or the battery. the 2nd Red LED should go out once the battery is fully charged, which should be it's normal state, switch on a couple of lights and it comes on, switch them of and it stays on for 5 mins or so then starts to flicker then goes out. Hope you get it sorted ok, Ray
When I bought my (86) Talisman, the habitation electrics were all over the place - the upshot being that nothing worked from the leisure battery at all; only on EHU. I removed the 'AS' control panel and discovered that it was a Labcraft, as it appears you have, too. After 2 or 3 unanswered emails to Labcraft I got absolutely nowhere (just like Autosleepers!) so I painstakingly disconnected everything, traced all the connected external and internal wires (as well as the printed circuit board layout) and made a sketch diagram. That's the good news - the bad news is that I can't find the diagram now! If and when I do find it, I'll send you a copy. The two upper LED's ('Mains On' & 'Charging') didn't work at all (even on EHU) and, during my investigations, I ascertained that these LED's are fed via PCB tracks from terminals 1, 2, 3 & 4. I found a 4-core cable which ran from those connections, down to the charger unit in the cupboard below, but they weren't connected anywhere on the charger (there was nowhere on the charger to connect them to!) This led me to believe that someone had, at some time, replaced the charger with a different model. I had to remove the charger to find out the make and model (which I wrote down on the wiring diagram - 'groan') and I phoned the manufacturer to ask if it was suitable to feed the habitation electrics and charge the LB at the same time - and it is! It's apparently an intelligent bit of kit that gives priority to the battery when required. I'm a little tied up at the moment with a house move, but as soon as I get a chance I'll have another look and let you know which model it is. The 2 upper LED's still don't work, but I can live with that. When the mains are on, the green 'Fully Charged' LED lights up all the time. When on battery, it shows either Green, Amber (normal) or red (Charge Battery). Nothing ever flashes or flickers if I switch something on or off. Oh, incidentally, nothing worked from the leisure battery when I first got the van because it wasn't connected into the control panel! Best wishes D ___________________ Think outside the box - save yourself some money!!!
It's nice to hear from you, I am well thanks, I hope your move goes well, I understand moving house ranks alongside, bereavement, a death and owning a TE in the stress league tables, although I'm not sure in which order!! I have not been able to source a wiring diadram for the charger for our age vehicles, so would very much appreciate it if you are able to find the sketch you made and make of charger. Kind Regards and best wishes George
