I have seen people riding mopeds with twin rear wheels, very close together (say 4 inches or so apart) in Spain and in the UK.

Does anyone have any idea of the name of such a moped, ansd a dealer from whom to buy one?

I think that HONDA made such a moped.

Frank,

Your looking for the Honda NV50MSD Stream. Honda UK stoped importing this model back in 1987 !!! Though as you have noticed, it may still be available in Spain or France.
If you require any further info on this bike, give me an email at [Log in to view email]

Nigel ( X-Honda dealer )

Why would you want one? They were a disaster! Go 2 wheels or get a Robin Reliant!

Bobbi, may I ask "why" you think they were a "Disaster" ??????

When they were first sold, they were quite expensive, approx £1000, compared to a standard moped of about £6-700.

Apart from this, they were never a Disaster!!! In fact many of my customers enjoyed using the so much, that at least two of them owned their's for over 14 years each? Not bad for "A Disaster"!!!

The only problems we had with them, was with a few disabled customer's, who thought that because they had two wheels at the back and a faster engine than battery operated mobility cart's , they would be easier for them to use.

Unfortunatly they were not, because they pivoted at the back and required a degree of balance, which unfortunatly many of these people did not have.

We did have one customer that had a few problems, though !!!! the engine was the same as a standard Vision and this chap weighed about 20 stone !!! A combination that did not work very well on steep hill's !!!

So unless you know otherwise, they were Never A Disaster !!!!

After following this discussion I have managed to track down a 1983 Honda NV50MSD three wheeler moped and it's great. Ok it may not be to everybodies taste but it's certainly unusual. It's been standing since 1991 but still runs. I'm looking forward to a light rebuild / overhaul and using it as a local run-a-bout. Anyone have spares / manuals / handbooks, brochures etc that they want to sell ?

Paul,
The only manual available for this bike is an Original Honda one, you could try your local dealer and see if he can order you one?

Honda now offer a Photo-copy service, so if they still have their copy, they should still be able to supply it???

I have a look to see if I can find the part number, if I can, I'll post it here.

Otherwise, the engine is the same as the Vision, so you could use a manual for this bike if you need to do any Engine Work (only!).

Best of luck with your new bike,

Regards,

Nigel

Can I throw in a few things that I never saw the point of....?

why have two wheels at the back?
the grip of a trye increases as it is leaned, so keeping it (them) upright is daft.

two tyres to replace instead of just one?

it used normal tyres ie "U" shaped, guaranteed to wear out super fast, because only one part of the tyre is ever going to be in contact with the ground.

if you hit a bump on a 2-wheeler you go straight up and down, with three you'd have a sideways force as well.

why have three wheels (indicating staility) if you are going to put A BLOODY GREAT HINGE IN THE MIDDLE!!!!???

Sorry, but it sounds like a disaster to me... unless of course someone somewhere predicted a world shortage of side-stands, in which case it was just a case of listening to the wrong [Log in to view email]

The reason I bought one is because they are so pointless. I collect vehicles (7 cars & 6 bikes) so the weirder the better.
My bikes include a Honda C100, CB92 Benly, CX500c Shadow, Yamaha Carat, MZ TS 250 Supra 5 and Honda NV50MSD Stream (three wheeler). Cars include Piaggio Vespacar, Berkeley T60, Austin A35, SII Land Rover etc so I am not in the "main stream" of vehicle buying either bikes or cars. I think it's a case of every body to their own - I cann't see the point of race replica's myself !

I have probably arrived at this message too late, but I am looking for a Piaggio Vespacar now also known as "APE", I think. Reliant Cars imports them on behalf of Piaggio and they are quite expensive considering that on a Greek Island I could get one for the equivalent of £2400. Why import thru' a 3rd party when they have their own operations here is a mystery. It only adds to the cost. Alternatively, if anyone knows of a good 2nd hand one going...
Thanks
Michael

Want a three-wheeler moped with stabilizers? Check out http://www.fun-tech.co.uk They also do a four wheeler that you can drive on your motorbike licence. Why doesnt UK treat mopeds the same as France - drive at age 14, no licence, no tax, no insurance.HERMIT

I've inherited a Honda Stream
moped (3 wheeler) from I guess the
mid eighties.
Is it a valuable rarity or just a
very old moped?
If it's valuable where would I
sell it?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi,

there are small scooters and mopeds such as you are describing . Probably you saw the Honda Stream or Honda Gyro. But, their predecessors were the Ariel 3 and the Daihatsu Hello ( Hallo ).

I research three-wheeled vehicles which lean through turns. These could be best used for a fully bodied motorcycle-like vehicle since one would not need their feet to balance to stop, etc.

A friend of mine used information I'd gathered to make a website :

http://www.maxmatic.com/ttw_index.htm

However, since he made the site, many European companies have been showing prototypes : Aprilia, Italjet, Piaggio, Peugeot, Renault, Derbi and others. None of the new prototypes is fully bodied ( except the Mercedes and Vandenbrink Carver )for all weather riding. If someone would build one with a slippery aero body such as the General Motors Lean Machine from 1983, it would be possible to get incredible fuel mileage ( 150 mpg with a conventional gas engine ) with sporty acceleration as well as great fun on a curvey road.

But, back to the Ariel and Honda. Here are some links :
