Hi,I have just treated myself to this little beasty after being the proud owner of a ford orion 1600i, but unfortunatly i dont seem to be having much luck with it at the moment! ive had it three weeks and already things are not to good, with the latest being the front suspension leg has an oil leak, the roll bar bushes are badly worn the front crank shaft seal is leaking oil, the battery is not holding any charge and has cought me out on a number of occations, good job for car the warrenty !!!!, but my real worry is as follows:
I have just discovered that the air flow metre is missing and has been bypassed some how !!! but for what reason i do not know, if there is any one who may have the answer I would appreciate some feedback.
Also would this slow the car down?
My old beloved orion seemed so much more responsive and im sure that this should not be the case.
Thanks

Air flow meters cost around £80, so the previous owners either didn`t have the money to buy a new one or it has had a cone air filter on it. The airflow meter is essential to give the ecu the right data for fueling. Make certain the cambelt has been changed, yours should be done every 5 years or 60000 miles. Cambelt tensioners are also prone to cracking and should be replaced with the belt.

i own an m reg fiesta si (1600). The performance is truly amazing for a car which costs the same to insure as my old nova! The si runs rings round my mates nova gte! I have had trouble with the steering geometry on my car, but when it goes, boy does it go! The cone filter that snake refers to are a truly blinding bit of kit they give the car a good kick up the arse, especially when used along with a free flow exhaust. The brakes are also a weak point(see earlir discussion about wheel vibration). get one and you wont regret it, teach the twatty little 17 year old boy racers a thing or two.

Do not get the 1400 fiesta as you will end up with no end of running problems, and they are so slow and do not have the wing back seats either. Zetecs will go to 200000 miles easily if you change the oil and filter every 5000 miles and also add a can engine flush and injector cleaner at the same time. Don`t buy one if it is misfiring when cold on idle as this is an early symptom of sticky valves. I was going to buy one but got a turbo instead!!

I`ve just had my turbo rolling roaded and we done a test on air filters which you may be interested in. With the standard air box and jamex panal filter the engine produces 170 bhp, and with the airbox completly removed with no filter it still produced 170 bhp. So unless you want it just for the noise your better off just getting a panal filter and keeping the other £35 in yer pocket.

I agree and disagree with your last statement. I have owned a 1.4si 1994 M reg for almost 4 years, and have not had a single breakdown or problem. The engine (looked after) still runs sweet, with no nasty noises. I do however agree that it is very slow and after having recently driven a 16v, I noticed a difference in the higher gears.

I have also played around with the airflow meter and air filter, and discovered some strange things. I fitted a cone filter directly to the airflow meter, therefore did not remove the meter, and noticed no improvements in performance, only sound, but whilst doing this I unplugged the airflow meter briefly whilst the car was running. This would normally cause most cars to cut out, as it confuses the ECU into thinking that the airflow into the engine has stopped, but the Fiesta carried on running just as before with no change in performance.

The ECU must be programmed to work in the event of airflow meter failure, but I do not recomend that the car is run without this valuable sensor.

In response to the bloke that recons his 16v Si is a real rocket, get a life mate, your motor is economical, not built for performance! Vauxhall engines are far more responsive, and do not feel half as restricted. Even though I own this Si, I have had 3 other 'boy racer motors' at the same time, two Astra GTE`s and a Cavalier GSi, and these cars are in a different league!

You`re lucky then, but once they start getting problems they never stop. I went on a course up at daventry(ford) and I spoke to some of the instructors up there about that engine and they admit ford got it completly wrong when they started using that engine with that management system. Stick that 1400 back on carbs and it will fly!!. Running the engine without the airflow meter will eventually lead to cat failure as the ecu needs to know how much air the engine is sucking in and without it the ecu will not be putting the right amount of fuel into the engine thus causing a too rich/lean mixture. I do agree that vauxhall engines are better and more powerful, but strap a turbo onto the new type zetecs and you can see anywhere from 150-400 bhp!!

Hi,
Thanks for the info,I have had all the fault corrected and its running great now.
I have a question you may be able to answer.
My car is fitted with a factory built alarm, but I dont think its working. The red light on the clock does not flash when the car is locked, should it?
How can I check to see if it is working ?
Thanks

Yes it should flash if fitted. Open the bonnet and you should find a switch on the slam panal, keep pressing it up and down until it beeps at you - this is the self test mode. You then need to open/close all doors, unlock/lock doors + tailgate, turn ignition on. Each time you do one of the above you should hear a beep, if not then theres your fault. Selftest cancels after 30 secs. If you cannot get into selftest mode then either the module is knackered or there is a bad contact in the module(drivers kick panal-it says central locking control module or something like that). All you need to do is pull the 2/3 block connectors off, smear some grease in them then connect/disconnect a few times to get a good contact, this is a common fault!!. Just a thought that the bonnet switch may be knackered, so u could open/close a door to activate the self test also. Does the red light actually work?? it should come on for a few seconds when you turn the ignition on.
