I am thinking of buying a boat for the first time (coastal crusing - nothing too adventurous) - having looked at the specifications of a few boats, I wonder whether a Newbridge Venturer might be a good bet - does anyone have any experience of starting out with this type of boat? (any good points, or things to watch out for when buying)many thanks Rob Reed

the venturer is an ideal boat for the type of sailing that you are going to do. hey are very well made and heavily built, it is a proper little cruising yacht capable of putting up with alot more than you will be so don't worry, trust it because it will get you through. I have a bilge keel version and though the upwind performance is not great overall I am more than happy with the performance. there is brilliant accomodation for a 22 ft boat with loads of locker space. I have an outboard in a well but it does have a tendency to choke on its own fumes. i intend to put a new rubber seal on the outboard leg this winter to stop the problem. I am using a 6 hp tomasu 4 stroke saildrive though I have in the past used a 2 stroke yamaha but this is not really enough against any headwinds or tides.I have not encountered any real problems and have always found the handling good under sail though reversing under power does take a little time to get used to as the whole thing always wants to go the wrong way
