Hi, Now before i start i have read all the posts from the last couple of years regarding the towing of Hobby caravans wider than the 540. I accept that the written law says that if you want to tow a caravan that is 2.5mtr wide you must have a commercial vehicle of 3501kg...... But ! people are still doing it. Most police dont mind, and insurance companies will cover you. So i'm still tempted to join them !
After all, able men are meant to practice with there bow and arrows every sunday but that law doesnt seem to be upheld.
Just a few questions. What i want to know is this.

How many German caravan owners are out there who are towing with 4x4's ? Are the multitude of posts out there condeming 8ft wide towers all from bitter brit van towers ? Or are the police confiscating euro vans as we speak ?

If i decide to tow a "brit van beater" with my LWB terrano and get my collar felt, what will my fine and be ? i only really want to hear from hobby owners who have been through this. (if any)

2001 Hobby-£3500, 1996 spectrum-£7000
"erm, what do i go for?"

Do you know what an IN10 is??
it's what they put on your licence for driving without insurance and we call an endorsement, that's along with the mandatory 8 points that go with it.
You say the insurance don't mind, I say they don't mind taking your priemum...it don't say they will honour your policy?.
Lets put it this way
Tell your insurance people that you intend to pull a caravan that you know to be illegal to tow with the vehicle they are insuring to do it, if 'then' they say yes?... then you make sure it's in writing

P.S. Insurance companies love it when they ask "any endorsments" and you reply IN10 sheepishly...the next thing you will say is.. HOW MUCH..and that's if they will insure you at all

I have been looking at Tabbert, Fendt,West,LMC & Hobby caravans also, and like you find the law an ass – in saying that - I don’t want to break the law and found that the Tabbert Contesse looks like its legal – width is 2.30 and the length is shorter than lots of UK caravans. I have looked at most German caravans and like most of them my wife likes the Fendt so that would be the one I would like but not at the expense of breaking the law - I have a 92 Swift Conquerer which I have had from new but I am ready for a new one that could well be the last caravan I will buy. I tow my Swift with a Toyota 3ltr Surf and don’t know its there when towing. So if I was to buy a 4 ton van to tow a Hobby or Fendt would that be legal ?

I'm keeping my eye open for a 540. It just annoys me that british manufacturers cant compete with the Germans when it comes to a box on wheels !!
